New X-H2 owner here, been using for around 10 days. Amazing camera, but I haven't been able to look at the files on a large screen (only on my Macbook). That answer seems to indicate that Fuji has no plans of reverting that shadow crushing. They might be doing that to hide the deep black noise on those shots, but that's a shame. I'm excited to see what the video looks like on real world usage. Thanks for the video!

It does seem odd given it’s not there in the 6K. I’m trying to imagine the maths behind the line skipping but failing miserably. Maybe the skipping gave a pattern to the noise that was distracting? It seems a bit of a brutal fix if it is. I got my X-H2 today. I don’t have an S to compare but I still have my X-T4 as a baseline. If I start right away I might be able to test every resolution/codec/bit rate/picture profile combination before the X-H3 arrives 🙄

As a hybrid shooter who does a lot pictures the 40mp version looks very good to me, especially as it is cheaper. I usually dont need more than 4k60 and having 8k is great for cropping in video or taking out fotos from the video

Could there be a standardized test for rolling shutter? Place the cam on an electrically turned head for controlled and standardized movement. Then film a section of vertical lines on a chart and compare the deviation from perfectly vertical. Yes, certain things more than mentioned need also to be standardized...

I think I forgot to ask last time about the following: Everyone analyses the rolling shutter effect in 4K, 6.2K or 8K, but non-oversampled 1080p is seldom looked at. Is non-oversampled 1080p rolling shutter any different (better) than 4K on the X-H2? Because I wouldn't mind using 1080p for home videos, for instance. I'm loving the high resolution possibilities of the X-H2 both for photo and video, especially the pixel-shift mode. It'd be a shame to lose them by choosing the X-H2s...

My experience is that even if flog2 is noisier and in 60p uses 12 bit instead of 14, for very demanding colours/lighting scenarios flog2 can handle those very well where hlg and flog1 will start losing detail and clip/shift colours, When I was out testing i shot flog2 of a black/gray crow sitting on a white birch branch lit by the sun and camera exposed for the crow and still being super overexposed i was able to recover detail in the branch it was sitting. absolutely amazed. Only exception is in very low light there is a lot of magenta chroma noise in flog2 but it disappears completely in flog1, noticed this while trying to record the auroras. Thanks for the amazing insight of both cameras!

Nice review between the X-H2 vs X-H2S. I would go for the X-H2 myself for the 8K capability since I don't see any other cameras under $2K that can do 8K! The battle for APSC sensor cameras seems to be heating up now that the Fujifilm X-H2/S, Sony FX30 and Canon EOS R7 are out. It would be great to have a comparison of all cameras in the sub $2K category to see which one would produce the best video quality for budget filmmakers.

8K is not needed and if you want 8k, you must be doing movies and if thats the case, you have no need to purchase a Fuji camera. You should look into cinema cameras. I'm just saying, people only really need 4k, maybe 6k but its not needed especially for the work people do.

I haven't used the XH-2 but, I rented the XH2-S and it was fantastic. I won't lie, after using the 4k120p, I would settle for that over anything higher resolution. It was so nice if you can practice with the autofocus system. I used it with the new 150-600mm lens and I was filming a squirrel from inside my hotel room way out on a tree and I could count the hairs on his ears.

@@sydneynomura281 Cropping an 8K video to a 4K video with the desired focal length and viewpoint has a lot of advantages you can't get with a 4/5/6K only camera. Yes, a dedicated cinema is best but not for a budget filmmaker/hybrid shooter. The BMPCC 6K G2 is tha budget cinema camera but I wouldn't take photos with it.

I have a fuji XT-2 i've been looking to upgrade for a year now and I keep wanting to jump to Sony or Canon but I have 5 lenses that I love with fuji and want to get the new 56mm 1.2. I do tend to shoot in poor light conditions sometimes so I think which ever is better for that would be best for me. I wanted full frame for that reason but I don't want to switch and sell everything. The only thing I didn't like were the button setups and the removal of the ability to press in the scrolling dials front and back. I still don't get that, it was so nice on the XT series.

The Canon R5 in Gerald's R5 and R6 review exhibited very similar behaviour as the Fuji X-h2 where the total dynamic range was equal to the low number. The non-HQ mode on the X-H2 still appears to have better dynamic range than the Canons based on the test patterns in your reviews.

I did the dynamic range test vs the XH2S here on my channel, everyone doubted me lol. I ended up returning the XH2 because of the quality loss in 60FPS.

Honestly I really don’t think it’s a quality loss just that it as more contrast. I will suggest in 4K60p in the XH2 you shoot with flog1 instead of flog2. Either way I’m enjoying both cameras and been using them for my client jobs.

As always, a fantastic review. This is a great service you perform in your exhaustive analysis of these cameras. Thank you so much. I'll have to candidly say I Love the X-H2s, but really wish the AF were better. While AF is convenient in certain instances, mostly it makes for lazy filmmakers. You are (at least among the few who mention this from time to time), Specifically, Fuji provides a fantastic consolation by giving users something that is much better: the best peaking capability of any camera I know of, hands down. Rokinon X mount lenses are fantastic, and provide butter-like focus pulls, that not only look gorgeous, but are also wonderfully accurate, detailed, easy to see and control. Using it makes for a much more creative and inventive shooting experience than trying to treat the camera like some sort of glorified point and shoot. GAAAHHH. Enough with that.

I don’t know if anyone has asked this or not but what about filming with these two cameras together? I have the h2s and am picking up the h2 for resolution in stills. I also shoot video scenes and need 2 cams for that. I currently use Sonys for work but my personal business I’m using Fuji. It’s a little complicated to explain but I have different brands for different things.

Thank you for the insightful review. I'd say if budget was a major constraint in a Fuji only, small independent studio, (like mine where it's just 3 people) then the XH2 would be a great second camera when the need arises. We can keep it on the tripod for all locked off shots while the XH2S, (which we currently have) would be amazing on a gimbal/handheld. Together, they'd be a great Fuji only setup and the savings can go towards cheaper and lighter Sigma lenses versus the very good but expensive new 1.4s from Fuji. Hopefully the recording to SSD, waveforms and false color from the 100ii will come to these two soon. Now, Fuji just needs to get their AF firmware issues sorted(a bit of a lost cause though considering their inconsistent results across lenses) and IBIS, well it seems like they just have bad hardware that isn't yet up to the challenge of their version of compact and dense bodies.

Very detailed comparisons 😱 There are options that I let on without knowing what it is such as the interframe noise reduction. It is weird that the x-h2 crops in 4k60. this is pretty basic now. The fact to be able to zoom in also in video is very handy. it saves post work Pitty that the x-h2 doesn't offer open gat mode (even though I also still not get 100% what it means) The 4k hq from the h2 is better than the 4k from the xh2 I guess then. The tricky thing would be to coordinate all that when shooting with both of them for a given video - Isn't Prores Hq the best of the best that you can get out of those cameras ? (and prores hq flog 2 the very best?) - Does the 4k of the x-h2s have a similar 'bad' dynamic range than the non hq 4k from the x-h2? (from What I understood, the 4k of the xh2s is better than the non hq of xh2. ) - What happens if you have a footage with some scenes in flog, some in flog2 and some in eterna?

I see the xh2s is a superior video camera which is what it is marketed as. I will be buying the xh2s instead of the xh2. The $500 difference is worth it to get the stacked sensor. I think the xtrans 5 processor has a lot left in it and I think fuji will definitely kizen this bad boy to be a MONSTER. Really hoping for 1080p 480fps 😊😊😊😊

A lot of other cameras downsample from 6K though. The other two cameras in your list can actually shoot 6K. GH6 would be a more suitable inclusion than FX30 which can’t shoot 6K.

The XH2S is a great camera with those 14+ stops of dynamic range score by using davinci resolve noise reduction. But the noise quality and appearace should be taken with a grain of salt. Some would like its fine, sharp, and gritty looking noise but some would probably also prefer blocky but softer noise like what other camera brands produce. It all boils down to your style and its features are outstanding for a 26mp camera.

Saying the new Fujifilm XH2 series' AF poor is an understatement. I have tried the XH2S in field shooting using AF in several trial situations, talking head, run and gun walking subject tracking, transitioning from subject to subject both on the same focusing plane and near and far etc. Unlike Panasonic AF, it's was OK when in focus but utterly unreliable when I had to switch focus points or if the subject moved. My old Canon 70D DSLR autofocuses miles better than that in every respect. You also have to be careful when you plan to rely solely on manual focus using most Fuji lenses. The focus by wire mechanism is not smooth and sometimes jumpy making smooth transitioning next to impossible. IMO unless you use one of Fujinon's excellent cine lenes or 3rd party true manual lenses, using one of these Fujifilm cameras for critical work would be at best annoying and at worst wreck your shoots.

Hi Gerald. Just an observation and a request. Please could you use the black solid cursor rather than the white solid when highlighting data on predominantly white backgrounds. I might be alone, but I find I'm visually scanning the graph to find the data you are talking about, only for you. to have moved on to another point by the time I find the cursor. The X-H2 is $2700 USED in Japan and all cameras made within the last few years are so expensive that I can't even think of buying older ones. I hope that this camera is still useful in 4 years when the price comes down to the point where I can actually afford it.

I just wonder how it achieved a 14+ stop dynamic range. Does it have an extereme under the hood noise reduction even when the in camera noise reduction is turned off? It would be interesting to see the detail preservation performance in normal/brighter lighting and also with human subjects. If it still preserves the details in brighter lighting/human subjects while in 14+ stops dynamic range; now that would be impressive but currently I am still not sure if thats the case because I havent found enough tests of those specific scenarios.

I think it’s because of the noise pattern. Fuji advertised their new gen sensors as having the closest to film behaviour, noting that their noise patterns are very close to film. This leads me to believe that it’s the noise pattern+the resolution of the sensor that allows for such tremendous results

So... question about fuji camera settings. I own an x-t3. In regards to sharpness and noise reduction video settings. Is -4 off? Or is 0 off? Is 0 sharpening a bit or is it off and is -4 actually softening the image? This could be a bit less confusing and the manual offers no clarification. Thanks

Excellent comparison as always! Can either camera crop 2x from 4K to 1080p in the same way the X-H2 can crop 2x from 8K to 4K? Since I'm thinking of getting a camera that can shoot motorsports adequately (lots of panning), either I get the X-H2s or I get the X-H2 but restrict to 1080p due to the excessive rolling shutter at 4K.

I will suggest you get the XH2S since you be doing more run and gun in fast moving objects with panning. Either way you can’t go wrong with either because Fujifilm really did good with both cameras.

While I can't definitively answer your primary question, ( I doubt if they can do that. If Gerald hasn't mentioned about them, I'm sure Gordon Laing would have..you can consider watching his reviews if you haven't). Going by my past experience with motorsports (hobbyist and some years ago) and going by the XH2S performance reviews (I have one but haven't used it for motorsport yet) I'd strongly recommend the XH2S. Not sure about your time & storage constraints during post, but my advice would be to shoot in 4k and reframe in post whenever possible. As of this comment, not sure about either of them doing high res to 1080 in camera zoom. Maybe they could introduce that in firmware later, but the thing is most people prefer shooting in 4k and then exporting to 1080 if needed so I'm not sure if they might add this feature. Wish you the best and I'm sure you will enjoy the cameras, whichever one you pick. May you get more work coming your way. God bless.

Gerald, great video! I guess now that the XH2 is out it is way highly recommended compared to the A1 that Sony has been leaving without the focus breathing compensation or other firmware updates. $2000 vs $6500 is quite a large difference for what people are getting here. If the Fujis had better autofocus would you be more inclined to recommend them over Sony?

The Fuji XH2/S got better autofocus. I have been using the camera for over 3 months and so I can tell you so.

@@Alexrocks1253 The AF is on level with whatever Sony has to offer. Coming from someone that own the Sony A7SIII and Sony A7IV I can say Fuji autofocus is greatly improved just make sure you using lenses with LM because those are built to me fast for video autofocus.

I am using Fujifilm X-S10 and to be honest, I have never had any issues with the AF, I am also using ZV-E10. I am pretty sure XH2 has proper AF system, I am getting one over Sony FX-30.

i really like this video, i'm impressed about the details. but as a full fuji hybrid shooter: if my client pay me as much as your information are important, i go RED. and so long, i take the camera, who i feel convenient with. but: get my like sub and all my love, for your work!

A7iv 4k 30p FF also has huge dynamic range difference from 4k60p apsc. Also happens in shadow.

Don't know how you found this, it is just crop without pixel binding, appart from the normal lower dynamic range hit cause of the apsc framing on my test it was pretty good and still be

@@Guillaume9 Hi, I don't know if you need to lift shadows in post in your work, but if you want to see the difference, lift the shadow to 100%

@@ginoy8885 100% is not very precise, if you take into account what editing software you use and the color profile used. And having to sée at 100% seems normal with a 1,5 Times crop. Si not the same as a marginal crop as what is happening in the x-h2, and again it is absolutly not the same use case line skipped 1.1 et Times cropped against 1.5 cropped 4.7 oversample 4k with juste a bit less Dynamic range

I have a GH5 and I wonder if I should go for Fujifilm X-H2 or X-H2S or X-S20. The X-S20 has a X-Trans CMOS 4 instead of 5 however . I hope to get a fast responsive and reliable camera for autofocus and stabilization.

Does the AF perform the same during digital zoom as during normal use? Face and eye detection still work? Or is it like Sony clear image zoom where AF reverts to dumb mode?

Can you pleeease review some high end cameras? I'd love that video. Arri Mini vs RED V Raptor vs Sony Venice 2 vs Canon C700. Then compare it to something like the fx6 or c70 to show what you're getting for all that extra money.

X-H2S question: I mostly shoot 4K24 and 4K60 in ProRes 422 externally recording to Ninja V+ via HDMI. I don’t understand the difference in shooting ProRes 422 with no codec and shooting ProRes 422 with ProRes codec. What should I be doing? Will shooting ProRes with ProRes codec make the clips more efficient in the editing process? Does it have any drawbacks?

Recording over HDMI likely bypasses the codec you set in camera.
