Gerald, thanks for mentioning the Porta Pak power alternative. I'm considering this for some documentary work and wanting to go as "stripped down" as possible. Being able to mount the camera on top of the battery will really help reduce bulk and create even cleaner and quicker access to the back monitor. Thanks for always providing such thoughtful content.

I am a stills photographer mainly and when I do video prefer to use a video camera rather than a DSLR/Mirrorless bodies which ergonomically are not ideal and end up having to be mounted in rigs with numerous attachments before they become functional. In terms of value and function even on this side of the Pond, the Pocket 4K is great value for money and this episode by you the King of All Things Purple showing the choices you made on kitting out this camera is really interesting in terms of addons and costs.

98wh batteries are totally the way to go. You get that sense of relief when you can just keep shooting especially on longer days. Equivalent to that feeling I got the one project I used a 2tb samsung t5 to record with... It just... keeps... going! Glad Portapak is willing to be flexible on cable offerings especially when marketing to the pocket shooter crowds. Kudos to them. I've been looking into vmount battery options like FX Lion, blueshape, core swx and anton bauer. Nice to see other solutions also. Btw you should do a video on how you manage your media. Would be interested in seeing whether you archive your show content or once you finish your edits and upload to KZfaq, let it transition into the digiverse in the sky. Great video, and solid recommendations! Take a look at the Tilta V-mount plate. I was thinking about that one, since it has a ton of power connectors. It's probably more expensive than the SmallRig plate, but I'm also thinking about having other gear powered by V-mounts, and I currently don't plan on taking the camera off for handheld like Gerald, but I'm not ruling it out.
@josephnicklo2994

I love that the Ikan follow focus system has internal batteries. I hate that I need to connect the Tilta nano to a power source. Glad to see someone finally mount the v-mount battery flat so it doesn’t block the screen. Just found your channel and giving it a sub! One thing about keeping the battery in the camera, the v-mount will charge the battery inside the camera will it’s running. So let’s say you need to go lightweight for a bit...you drain the crappy canon battery in 20 minutes (lol) and then go back to your rig...charges the Battery :)

Damn, I just bought and rigged out my bmpcc 4k. They had it with the cage, t5 mount, side clamp, and optical cleaning kit for $1369, Lanparte vmount plate $165, juicebox 150Wh vmount $179, t5 $189, moza air 2 $449, nikon speedbooster $389, sigma 30mm dx $150, nikon 50mm f2 $50, slr magic 8mm $149, atomos shinobi $299, camvate shoulder rig $239, 2 led lights with stands and power $125, npf batteries $60, ikan manual FF $250, plus a few other thing about $300. $4362 and I went all out but made sure to find the best bang for buck. Glad I didn't give in a year ago and waited to upgrade.

Gerald Undone One of your viewers below in the main comments asked if you had considered the Z-CAM E2 and I confess I’d not come across that to date in all the research I’ve been doing on cine-cam options. So I did a little homework last night and discovered what may be the best little gadget I’ve seen, particularly at the price point. You should have a look if you’ve not done so already and of course, a review from you on this E2 or even the E2-F6 would be highly valued if you can swing it. A young filmmaker, Scott Dumas, has done a decent job on an overview I caught last night but I’m sure you would take it to another level. Food for thought.

I would recommend that when you want to plug ssd back unscrew the cable place ssd plug the cable and tighten everything together. When you tighten the ssd and or cable it pushes it slightly downwards so if you keep the cable tight and try to plug ssd it might damage the port.

Great rig! You and I are using many of the same components. Two questions: 1) Have you worked through the challenge of using a VND and adding a lens hood. I use the Syrp and B+W 82mm VNDs on my Lumix 12-35 and 35-100 lenses, then screw on a collapsible rubber lens hood into the female threads of the filter. The round hood allows consistent shading when rotating the VND, as opposed to a tulip or rectangular shade. But, I get some vignetting in the corners from the hood, at wider angles. Do you have any better solutions? 2) As an alternative, I've okie engineered a couple 4x4 plates to hold both sides of my VND in my matte box. Then one of the filter trays rotates to adjust density. My end product is a bit janky, but with enough fiddling, it works. Have you seen a manufactured product that allows round 82mm filters to be used in a 4x4 matte box filter tray? Bonus question: Aputure has a couple DEC products that look like PHENOMENAL solutions. BUT...one is a speed booster that gives full control of a Canon lens (focus, iris, etc), but no eVND. The other is an eVND, but no speed boosting. Do you know of any combined solutions? An amalgamation of both products? Or maybe a drop-in speed boosting lens that can be used with the eVND?

Great setup. But it's interesting how different setups can be and how easy it is to find the own setup. I started with Smallrig - which is really really good for reasonable money - but switched to Tilta and their tactical setup - even better, nice accessories and better cable management. And I need a run&gun setup which is smaller than yours. So Tilta tactical rig with nice solid grip, awesome ssd holder (I use the 2 TB version of the T5), monitor shades, external monitor (I have a 5" Blackmagic Video Assist - so I use it), core SWX battery solution mounted under the cage for powering camera and monitor. I get around 2.5 to 3 hrs of recording time. Another SWX battery - just to be on the save side - replacement within seconds. VERY happe with this setup. Weight is good for shooting but not to heavy.

Question: I've heard mixed information about this but the metabones Ultra is designed for "Super 35" magnification with lenses for those kind of sensors or larger. The Sigma 18-35 is cropped for Canon APS-C which is smaller than the Super 35. Would this mean vignetting will still occur with the Ultra, despite people telling me there is only vignetting on the XL, or am I missing another variable? You're the man! Thanks.

It might be a silly question, but you mentioned adding a swing Matte Box or clamp-on Matte Box, but from this video with your lens, the rail rods don't seem to be long enough. Are they? Can you slide them out further? What length of rods would you recommend if a future Matte Box purchase seems likely to sit in front?

Ey, Gerald. Great info as always! Just a suggestion: you could have a song of some kind at the end of your videos while you're saying your standard closing remarks, StraightPipes style. I think it'll help inspire viewers to click on something else of yours. As you're a musician, I imagine this wouldn't be too costly. Cheers!

I used to have something like that. I suppose I could look into doing it again! Haha. Thanks for the suggestion. 😃

Hi Gerald, ive read it is not advised to have the lpe6 inside when running an external battery. In a FB group i have someone give me this reaseon: "It is right. You should not have a battery inserted in the camera, while using an external 12V. The reason is that the control and load circuit of the LP06 has a fairly high consumption, between 4 and 8 w, which is subtracted from what the camera needs to operate. Therefore, you would have to supply about 22 Watts for the camera, and with the energy expenditure of the LP06 inserted, it could reach or exceed 30 watts. With a dummy battery, the external one should only provide the power equal to the LP06, without activating charging circuits." Any thoughts on this?

I love your videos. Could you do a video on how sony cameras do in rough weather. Rain, snow, high humidity. I think this video is missing on youtube! :-)

What is your recommendation for the power chord and battery that runs from the Shinobi to the power source? Out of the box the Shinobi comes with a battery that plugs into a 2 prong wall power source.

I read that BM does not recommend keeping a battery inside the camera while using 12V input as it could damage the internal components, what would be your thoughts about it ?

Hey Gerald! Since you love doing your research when creating this kind of videos, and seeing how you connected both the camera and the monitor to the same Vmount battery. What are your thoughts on the "ground loop" issue that may occur by powering your monitor and the camera with the same battery (some have reported that this setup has fried the HDMI and I'm a little afraid that it might happen to me as well if I do this).

Hello there, love that setup! where did you get that "infinite" follow focus ring tho? I can't find something like this anywhere, neither on your links, Kit page, or in the video. Was it included with your ikan bundle? I own a 30 € manual follow focus that came with a cranky plastic gear and I'm worried about the smoothness of this setup, especially since I would like to use it on hybrid lenses that has infinite focus rings. I even wanted to invest on cine lenses instead, since I hate that kind of rings on photo lenses, but I love the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 too much and I would rather buy it with a Metabones. I would love to know where you bought that gear ring. Thanks in advance!

Not sure if you answer questions but how did you get the PDMovie hot shoe clamp to slide into the small rig cold shoe mount?? IKan only gave room to squeeze onto a regular camera hot shoe mount with the screw size . Struggling big time to get that thing to slide on to it
