This is part 1 of my 2 part series called "Three-Valve Shower Body Repair".In this two-part series, I take you through the steps on removing and replacing the stems and seats in a three valve shower body.
When I started in the business back in the late 60's early 70's we would actually replace the washers, seats and re-pack the stems with new graphite packing. In today's world that's not a cost-effective alternative anymore so we just replace the old with new O.E.M. parts when available
The manufacturer featured in the video is Gerber which in my opinion makes a really good product and is very popular here on the east coast. Some other popular makers of this style shower body are Price Pfister, Sterling, Central to name a few. They're similar in design with slightly different takes on how the sleeves and escutcheons are attached.
As in most of the videos to date, I'm demonstrating on the bench top with a new fitting which means everything is being removed easily. A word of caution is that in the real world this may not be the case, and you're going to need a couple of specialty tools which I point out in the video.
As you can see in the video this shower body is set quite deep into the wall which can make removing the chrome sleeves a challenge. Before attempting to remove the sleeves regardless of how shallow or deep into the wall they are, you have to chip away and remove the tile grout or caulking.
This will increase the success rate of unscrewing and removing the sleeve without any damage. Although we live in a world of Single Lever anti-scald shower bodies, rest assured that there are thousands of these shower body's still in service and at some point, they're going to need repair. I laid out some recommended tools for this repair so check them out before you begin.
I'll see you in part 2:

Great video. To avoid scratching the chrome sleeve I wrap one turn of an old bicycle tube around it and then use channel locks or a small pipe wrench.

Bob great videos. Best on the Tube. Real world I would add a self- adjusting pipe wrench to the tool arsenal. 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch.It was the only thing I had to run out and get when I recently replaced my shower facets with a complete rebuild kit by Gerber. Diverter and chrome sleeve would not budge without it. Great job. PEACE Mark

Great video. I have 4 price pfister 2 and valves in my apartments for washer dryer shutoffs. Easy to find at Home Depot. One 3 valve seems to have a ceramic disc on a 3 valve. Wondering if that is Kohler or??????

Maybe Gerber Ceramic disc? Never seen an older Kohler ceramic stem?

I notice you didn't use any Teflon tape or pipe dope on the threads. Oversight? Not necessary? Thank you!

There are or "should be" nylon or fiber washers on the stems, occasionally when you remove the stems, they'll remain in the body.

Great video. However, I find it funny that every video I have watched on this subject the knob comes off easy. I've been tugging at my diverter knob with the handle puller for a good hour now.

+witstang Fact is in real life they almost never come off and if I can't get it off with the handle puller. I break them off and replace the handle as well!

5:48. My sleeve is so stuck on. It’s just not turning. I feel like the acrylic or glue .. whatever they used on the other side. Is preventing it from moving. I just can’t get it 😭. I really don’t want to replace the whole main valve

How can I get the stem out? (it's really old). It's far enough out that I can use a wrench, but it just won't budge! I'm afraid I'm going to break it. Any suggestions? Thank you!!
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 6 ай бұрын
Make sure the stem is in the neutral position (half way open) then use a crescent wrench, pipe wrench or channel lock pliers in a counterclockwise direction.

@@BobsPlumbingVideos Thank you! That... and a pipe wrench... helped. Fixed the drip, now I have to replace the packing (?). This old lady ain't a plumber. lol. (though my grandad was a master plumber and worked in the old oil fields!). Thank you for your help!

Have you tried putting a little Teflon on the seat threads before installing it? I've found that this often stops the leak. Also bear in mind when you shut off this type of stem (washers) the water will not STOP immediately. It will continue to trickle out for maybe 60 seconds give or take.

When I get a call for a three valve shower body, regardless of make I do a complete re-build. The rebuild kits are readily available from Home Depot or Lowes (unfortunately imported) and include all the stems ,seats, handles and all the chrome trim. I believe a company called Danco makes them.

I have 3 handle Price Pfister diverter stem that keeps leaking. I replaced stem and seat. Is it possible that it's a Gerber and someone previously installed wrong stem? They look very similar. Other ideas? I did make sure stem was in open position and both plastic washers and rubber one are new intact. Thanx, nice video.

Bob, can this type of 3 handle rough-in valve be installed upside down to accommodate water supply lines coming down from the attic/ceiling? They all seem to point downward for water supply as if made only for 2nd story homes. Of course if allow to flip, I would expect all handles to turn in the opposite direction. Thanks in advance.

The one in the video? No! I've seen two valve shower body's feed from the top but because of the center shower diverter, I believe they have to be installed as shown. If it were to be installed upside down you would have to pipe the shower riser out the bottom and back up to where you intend on placing the shower head.

Where can I find that set or socket ranches ? I have looked for them at home Depot, Menards, AutoZone, Ace. Problem is that the cartridge is inside of a pipe and my regular sockets don't fit in it

7:30: How is replacing a rubber washer or packing less 'cost effective' than buying new brass fittings? Isn't that the reason we're skipping the plumber and fixing it ourselves..?
@BobsPlumbingVideos
@BobsPlumbingVideos 4 жыл бұрын
For a homeowner / D.I.Y that holds true. But with the overhead costs associated with a service business in today's world and risking a potential call back because of the washer not working out, replacing the stem and seat is a better choice for the professional contractor.
