I agree, they really are underrated. Because of that, commercial foods are also aimed towards hamsters and gerbils don’t have the right things. I’m really happy that I was able to help you.

Yeah, I really luv the gerbils different personality, plus their unbelievable dexterity and gentle curiosity. I still have enjoyed hamsters and just simple mice. They're all so different!

@@finsandwhiskers It took me 10 years to realize that you can't have a universal diet for all rodents, and that the store bought diets for gerbils aren't the healthiest long run option. Of course, we didn't have such good informative videos back in the 1980's such as this one. I'm pretty sure it's benefited many people.

Ariana Davey any mix that has the percentages listed should work fine! And just avoid low quality mixes by ruling out those with dyed foods, too many fillers, and added sugar

I'm the guy with 3 two year old gerbils, and I learned from your video.. though I've always been pretty careful with their diets. But I like how observations on such a small animal transfers to human life, and it's very relevant on what's happening today in the world. I'm meandering, but here's a funny story - I've also got 4 girl mice. They're a year old. I got them as more of social experiment, though the little mouses kinda grow on u, even if they only live a few years... tops. They certainly ain't the daring and rambunctious gerbil, but a lot of fun. Anyways, I started giving the "mouses" peanut butter and brown sugar oatmeal as a treat for every other feeding. The sky little devils started to only eat that, and ignored the healthy food! So I make it a weekly treat now. There's sumthin' about gerbils, though, that they mean more like a dog or cat so often - the totally diff personalities, ect. Yours r adorable.

P.S. That's "sly" little devils. And the most important thing with girl mouses is their friendship - in fact, they're known to die from loneliness. Gerbs r more like us... social but w. high degrees of individuality.

I don’t recommend doing this! The gerbils are always going to eat all the seeds before they’ve even grown, and they will eat the bugs as well. Super worms have sharp pincers that aren’t safe for the gerbils either. It isn’t possible to have any cleanup crew with gerbils, a self sustaining enclosure can’t be done. However coconut coir is a great addition to a sand area.

I use a mix of Kaytee’s clean and cozy, hay, moss, and aspen wood shavings!

I feed 2-3 tablespoons of my homemade mix every other day or two :)

I’d say your best bet would be either Cunipic Naturaliss Hamster & Gerbil Mix or Higgins Sunburst. Both are higher in protein for adults by 2% but it’s doable. Most other options either have too many artificial additives and dyes, although recommended. These two are more natural options. It really is a struggle with gerbils, most high quality mixes are marked towards hamsters :(

I’d say you have two options. Go with a bit more protein but not fully 16% for some months, or use the percentages for growing gerbils for some months until you’re certain they are 6 months older. It shouldn’t have a bad effect for that time as long as you provide lots of space and a wheel, and encourage them to be active by maybe more play time out of the enclosure

I’d say it’s the best commercial mix at least, although 2% too high in protein. For growing gerbils though the protein is great for them, so definitely more than okay

I definitely plan on making one, right now is a bit of a struggle though as we’ve had bad weather and people buy out most of the variety of veggies so it’s taking me a while to film a good chunk of videos like that 😅

If you check out my DIY gerbil food mix video, I give the recipe that I made and use! Otherwise, Higgins Sunburst or Cunipic Naturaliss Hamster & Gerbil would be okay, it’s just 2% too high in protein for adult gerbils

I’ll make a video on safe flowers! To name a few though, calendula, mallows, cornflowers, chamomile, rose, hibiscus, sunflower, baby’s breath, and sweet alyssum :)

Flour seeds are what we usually use to make flour. Wheat, barley, oat, amaranth, rye, and millet are a few to name. Grains are the fruit or seeds produced by grasses, so oat would be considered a grain. To fill in the calculator, just follow the chart, read the guaranteed analysis of the mixes you’re using and include those percentages together. If you’re making a homemade mix it’s a little more tricky

Yes you can, but only in very tiny amounts because high amounts of sugar can cause diarrhea 🙂

I make my own mix, and I have a vid on that! Here where I am I don’t have many options available, so I just always recommend looking for a mix that doesn’t have what a low quality mix includes as shown in the vid, and you can add additional seeds and herbs to the mix from the supermarket or online to meet those percentages!
