A delicious, fatty portion of Schmalzkuchen (lard cake) with much Puderzucker (powdered sugar). That is really missing this year. 😥 By the way, up to now I never tried Honigmet hot. On Christmas Day we always drink it freezing together with our roasted goose and potato dumplings.

We always had the Weihnachtsmann (so basically santa) come on Christmas eve, and so did everyone else I know. I think the Christkind is more of a thing in states of Germany (or families) that are more under a Christian influence.

In the North, we don't have the Christkind, it's always Santa/Weihnachtsmann, played by neighbours oder friends. With Sack and Rute. As a child I was afraid of him😂. tse2.mm.bing.net/th?id=OGC.bcb943e49457d2d6e1467bcb110c2352&pid=Api&rurl=https%3a%2f%2fmedia.giphy.com%2fmedia%2fQBJD9bSQrYjGU%2fgiphy.gif&ehk=mhWmUUnOO0pKcRxFV8JMfRoSexnRn%2ftVBP%2f4MF5YKPY%3d

So my mom was born in Germany, so we celebrated both German and American Christmas. Since I went to Saturday German school and was in public school Orchestra I had double the school events. My dad refused to do the Christmas tree just before Christmas Eve though. We celebrated Advent(candle wreath, calendar, Stolle, Kaffee) and my dad and I put up the Huge 8ft Christmas tree together day before 2nd Advent. It was a whole day project, we only took breaks to eat... It wasn't one of those cheap tinsel trees, you had to assemble the branches they looked real with some pinecones and such. I remember cleaning my shoes the day before Nikolaus and putting out cookies and carrots. We did Heilig Abend, my Nenn-Omi (a Russian Prima Ballerina refugee) my mom was friends with and us had dinner, opened presents (a few were from Christkind) and went to late church service. Next morning we went to my grandparents for traditional American Christmas, with added Sicilian/Turin touches as my great grandma was Italian. My parents had my grandparents and great grandma over for Christmas dinner on the "unofficial" 2nd day. I spent my teens and most of my marriage years in Berlin before we came back to the US so I miss the Weihnachtsmarkt...

We actually had a lot of German traditions growing up...I'm from the south...and we had gingerbread advent....GLUHWEIN...brats...... Dinners etc and we had our big get together Christmas Eve...and then a simple dinner the next day.. And we continued to celebrate through epiphany!and of course church! Amazing how many traditions from the old country came over with my ancestors and were passed down through the generations..

When I was a child living in Germany it was Christkind that brought the presents and we opened all of our presents on Christmas Eve. When I moved to the US, my first Christmas in the US was when I was 10 and it was a culture shock that everybody waited until Christmas morning and that Santa Claus brought the gifts because to me his day was December 6th. Anyways, my family stayed with the German tradition even when we lived in the US, it was always interesting explain to my friends that I get to open all of my presents on Christmas Eve, they were all jealous.

Over here in Berlin in the mostly non-religious eastern part of Germany it's always been the Weihnachtsmann (Santa Claus) and not the more religious Christkind (Christ Child) bringing the presents. When we were young, we had this Christmas Eve family tradition where my Dad would take us kids on a bus ride across town to supposedly "look for Santa". This was simply to give Mom time to wrap all the presents and set things up for when we'd return from obviously not finding Santa. As we got older we always joked Dad only did it so he could eat a Bratwurst somewhere without Mom noticing. ;)
@S_Black
@S_Black 3 жыл бұрын
It's not really a religious vs. non-religious thing. The Christkind was originally a Protestant invention because Nikolaus was considered saint worship. But today it's more of a Catholic thing and thus far more common further south. At the same time the Protestants changed mostly to Santa Claus and equivalents
@berlindude75
@berlindude75 3 жыл бұрын
Well, we're neither Protestant nor Catholic, but non-religious. So even if we put boots out for Nikolaus (St. Nicholas Day) and celebrated Weihnachten (Christmas), we only ever spoke of the Weihnachtsmann (Santa Claus) to bring the presents. One of our grandmas was more or less religious (Protestant) and usually attended church at Christmas (the Catholic sermon because it was more splendid and colorful according to her). And only she ever mentioned the Christkind (Christ Child).

I have two recipes for Lebkucken. One is made primarily of ground nuts, "nach Nürnberger Art" the other is flour based. Both are baked on Oblaten, or undedicated Sacrament Host. They are delightfully fruity and sweet. This year, because no Gäste are coming, I have made none. May our new year be better for all of us.

After that we had to change clothes and than we had the Bescherung. On the next day we drive to my grandmother in a City in the Black Forrest, where we meet the siblings of my father and their families.

I grew up near Braunschweig in Germany and for us Bescherung was usually the same as at Phil's home, with the exception that at in our area the gift bringer is the Weihnachtsmann which is Santa Claus but he comes on Christmas Eve (sometimes in person played by a relative/neighbour/other person who got paid ) At our house he would usually arrive during Dinner leave the presents and then leave unseen...except for the two times my parents had my uncle dress up. Good times.

I'm german. In my childhood, the Christkindchen came, like you described. But there was no explaination about what the Weihnachtsmann has to do with it. Later, when I became a mother myself, I though I need to find a comprehensible way to explain this to my child. ( we are christians, so there is of course the Jesus Child/ The angels interfering,too ). I made up the following: Because little Christkindchen is not able to carry aaallll the gifts by herself, she needs Assistant Santa to help her. Tadaaa. So they both come together and Santa transports and carrys the gifts with his sleigh and reindeers and hands them over to Christkindchen inside the house to be put under the tree. One has to be creative, right *g* ...! Apart from that, I am sure , in my childhood, one night I heard the sleighbells of Santa...I swear :) happy holidays ya'll.

I miss going to the christmas markets with my friends and family. We would meet there, eat and drink a lot (mostly Reibekuchen und Glühwein mit Amaretto :D) and just enjoy the atmosphere. Hopefully we will be able to do that next year :(

I always thought that Santa Claus is something like a "jazzed up" version of Nikolaus. Like, moving him from side to main character. They even have the same name -> Heiliger Nikolaus -> Santa Claus -> Claus/Klaus is a short version of Nikolaus.
