BierTier explains PETROLEUM BOILERS!
Today we are going over a build made famous by the ONI god himself: FRANCIS JOHN. His petroleum boiler build is known by every seasoned ONI player. But I thought I would use my own style of explaining it to potentially help out new players with an easily understandable and short video. Let's watch now and see what makes this Petroleum Boiler work...

ABOUT OXYGEN NOT INCLUDED:
In the space-colony simulation game Oxygen Not Included you'll find that scarcities of oxygen, warmth, and sustenance are constant threats to your colony's survival. Guide colonists through the perils of subterranean asteroid living and watch as their population grows until they're not simply surviving, but thriving...
Build Extensive Bases and Discover What it Takes to Survive:
Everything in your space colony is under your control, from excavation and resource allocation right down to plumbing and power systems. Resources will begin depleting with your first breath, however, so be sure to dig fast if you want to live.
Avoid Boiling with Thermodynamics:
Temperature control is a constant concern in space; too cold and you'll freeze, too hot and you'll fry. Keep tabs on ambient environmental temperatures and your colony's heat production to maintain a nice, cozy atmosphere for your colonists.
Enhance Efficiency through Complex Gas and Liquid Simulations:
Create interlocking pipe systems to swiftly deliver fuel and liquid to critical areas of your base. Plan well and be rewarded as your colony transforms into an imperishable, well-oiled machine.
Take Charge with Power Grid Simulations:
Choose from a multitude of power sources including coal, hydrogen, natural gas, or just plain old elbow grease. Manage power runoff, circuit overloads, and meltdowns to keep your colony running smoothly.

you can make it from igneous rock because the heat transfer is quite low and it wont melt, had it for over 1000 cycles and never had any problems, but you can always make whats touching the magma out of ceramic

Yeah, ceramic is what I would recommend, better safe than sorry :)

One easy improvement is to have a small step at the top to separate the upper layer from the boiling chamber - the way it's built now, heat travels, via conductivity in liquid petroleum, from the bottom all the way to the top right, negating a lot of the exchanging in the top layer. Also, these kind of boilers suffer from a bug, that deletes heat in right corners where the petroleum falls. Such a bug does not exist in left corners. Of course as long as the volcano is powerful enough, it doesn't matter in the slightest as eventuallty magma piles up. That it piles up slower than it should makes no difference at all. Only if you're using a metal volcano (much weaker), you might want to use a vastly superior exchange design, one that is not affected by the heat deleting bug, such as a waterfall or bead-based one.
@BierTier
@BierTier 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the info, I was honestly not aware of this. I have built those boilers before in a normal game and never even noticed that issue to be honest, since the temperature of the petroleum usually doesn't matter to me too much. I appreciate the insight though!
@deilusi

there is a little bit nicer solution, that does not need miner. All you need is steel mesh tiles. Drip on mesh tiles, so stuff cannot become solid, always debris. This makes sure you don't need miner, and you will get out twice the mass of igneous rock, so hatches are happier.

I have a real Love- Hate relationship with this Design.I have seen more Bugs with this then with any other design i´ve ever Build (Magma randomly Melts my steel Door, Sour Gas flashes on the Drill, The Top 2 Liquid Pipes break even after the System Run for like 200 Cycles without problem...the List goes on)...but when it works it is just to good not to Build. I´ve tryed this like 8 Times and every time something else goes wrong...yet when i see a Vulcano and do have the Space for it i cant bring myself to ignore it ^^.
@BierTier

I have it only built once before in a normal game and I had no issues with it. I honestly can't remember how many cycles it ran(this was wayyyy before YT) but it should have been easily above 200. I have heard and read about issues though, just haven't experienced them myself. Maybe I will show off something else in the regard of Petroleum in the future :)

I've seen someone experiment with petroleum boilers and figured out it is more efficient (from the temperature gradient perspective) to have a stairstep design. Instead of having a flat shelf that cascades down into another flat shelf, one should do a staircase where the floor steps down and right with the oil pipe, as it ascends, touching all sections of the petroleum flowing down. Once the staircase reaches the right wall you do another staircase going down and to the left. As a result, there is an exceptionally efficient heat exchange between oil and petroleum where petroleum leaves at ~100C in less space.

Thank you for that info, that does make sense since there is more area of contact! I may play around with that in the future and see what I can do :)

the miner cant reach the bottom, i had to adjust... The problem i had, was that i had an leaky oil fissure in the way so had to build in reverse. Due to the automation not being able to 'flip' most of it was a mess, just had to shave a tile from next to the metal T, all was well and it never broke :)

Months late, but… you *can* contain magma with Ceramic, since it's usually found at around 1800°C and ceramic doesn't melt until 1850. In practice, even up to 2000°C (eg freshly-erupted) is fine because of fiddly little things like heat-exchange clamping. Given how ceramic is a relatively expensive material and Obsidian isn't terribly useful for much _besides_ magma containment, however, the latter is usually the better choice.

Interesting bug for ya!! If your doors are sideways it transfers all of the heat. If they are upright they only heat up until just before changing crude to petrol. Gamer beware XD

Bruh. Why I even need this waterfall from magma? I can just take temperature directly using 3 door with automatic and a vacuum mechanic (Then u using 3 doors, and u open a second one there would be a vacuum.
@BierTier
@BierTier 2 жыл бұрын
That would be possible indeed. With a lone Volcano you'd eventually run out of heat though since the Volcano would overpressure(since no Magma is removed), release no more magma and you keep taking heat out. There are many ways to go about it, this is Francis Johns way and I like the ingenuity, so I made a video about it :)

I really don't like people showing of this terrible petroleum boiler design. It is prone to so many failures it's not even funny. On the unofficial discord we constantly have to clean up the mess from people thinking this was a good design to build. And yourself alo make a lot of mistakes like saying that the insulated tiles touching the magma should be obsidian. They should not be insulated tiles at all. You use airflow tiles as it's a vacuum so there's no thermal transfer at all. It's the same issue in the needlessly big boiler used in the design. In a proper design you make the boiler walls out of airflow tiles because they can't take pressure damage and have no thermal transfer leakage. I could really go on and on about how every single detail in this build is a dubious design decision but I'd advice people to go on the unofficial discord instead because there's vastly better designs there made by vastly better players than Francis John.

I don't know about this unofficial Discord. Give me a link and I'm happy to take a look at it.
