Franz Beckenbauer, a German football legend, died on Sunday at the age of 78, his family said Monday.
"It is with deep sadness that we inform you that my husband and our father Franz Beckenbauer passed away peacefully yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family," his family announced.
"We ask that you mourn in silence and refrain from asking any questions."
Nicknamed "Der Kaiser" (The Emperor), Beckenbauer is widely regarded as one of the finest footballers of all time.
The greats of German football paid their respects to Beckenbauer after his death was announced.
"Franz Beckenbauer was definitely the biggest German footballer of all time, and above all one of the greatest men who I have known," said Hans-Joachim Watzke, vice president of the German foodball federation DFB.
Lothar Matthäus, who captained Germany to win the World Cup in 1990, hailed the late Beckenbauer as "one of the greatest as a player and a coach, but off the pitch as well."
"His death is a loss for football and for the whole of Germany," Matthäus told German tabloid Bild.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also called Beckenbauer one of the nation's greatest footballers of all time.
"We will miss him. My thoughts are with his family and friends," Scholz said on social media.

Hard to believe that Der Kaiser is no longer with us. He was what many youngsters, including myself tried to model themselves after. In a sport filled with superstars, his steely calm commanding play in nearly every position impacted the tempo of the game that delivered countless wins and adulation.

There weren't substitutes allowed in those days. Also, there was no red card offence against him. Italians respect the Kaiser a lot, Italians had the best defenders, but the Kaiser was the best of them all. The word "libero" is Italian, for "free". Appropriate for the Kaiser.

Franz Beckenbauer ist eine sehr sympathische Persönlichkeit. Ich war erstaunt über Beckenbauers Figur, er hatte nicht nur ein hübsches Gesicht, sondern auch eine sehr höfliche Persönlichkeit. Ich erinnere mich an die Zeit bei der Weltmeisterschaft 2002 in Japan, Korea, an das WM-Finale 2002 zwischen Brasilien und Deutschland, das Brasilien mit 2:0 gewann. Er war sehr respektvoll und würdevoll, respektierte den Sieg mit einem höflichen und freundlichen Gesicht, das heißt Figur & Figur Franz Bekenbauer ist gutaussehend, freundlich und großzügig...

Bless him...My Footballing Idol, since I first saw him play for Bayern, way back in 1964. I was on Bayern's books for a while and was in various Bayern Youth Teams and eventually broke through to the Senior Team. Sadly due to a bad injury my career was cut very short, but Franz Beckenbauer was picked out to be my Guid, Mentor, Advisor, Player to go to if I had any problems, he ALWAYS had time for me and he was THE Master at all of it. For me, he was the complete Player and he had everything, including being a brilliant Captain, Coach, Leader and over time, Friend. He had time for everyone and was well respected wherever he went and although we lost touch at times, for years on end, even to this day, he membered who I was whenever he saw me and always greeted me warmly and we had many a get together. The word "Legend" is so overused in this day and age, within the game and in truth, there are not many true Legends in the game, but he was a true Legend and he will be missed by those that knew him and by those that Support Bayern. Rest in Peace old friend....."Der Kaiser"....you will be missed. Heaven is getting itself quite the Football Team.

I remember how graceful he was. He was deliberately hit by the Italian team in 1970 World Cup semi-final which broke his ribs but he still continued to play & finish the game. He was a great player but a spectacular leader that is why he won so many trophies.

Oh, No!!! My Turkish father took me to Munich to see Bayern match 1976. I wanted to see Beckenbauer and i wanted to be Beckenbauer all my life. i even had his training book with young Karl-Heinz Rummenigge back in 1970. Very sad day for me. I lost part of my childhood. RIP Legend , Hero and icon. I am 60 years old and about the cry. i promise i will visit his cemetery near future. God bless you for all of the unforgettable memories. Respect to Der Kaiser from USA

I remember being a very young kid , and in the World Cup in Mexico against Italy with a dislocated arm , he taped his arm and play , despite going on to lose the game , he play and try to win 😮
