In America everyone focuses on D-day and the following push to Berlin. In reality we had a really easy fight in Europe. Germany was defeated at that point. The Eastern front was a different story. Brutal nonstop fighting for 4 solid years. So many stories, and a sea of content ignored by the west..
@WheelsRCool
@WheelsRCool 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is partially due to Cold War propaganda, and it is a shame, as the Eastern Front is where 80% of the German military forces were concentrated. I think it is wrong to say that the Western Front was "easy," as it was very difficult for the troops, it is just that the Eastern Front was on a whole other level in terms of the sheer scale and levels of human savagery and brutality.

Evan Dotterer Your wrong Evan! Yes the war in the Soviet Union was of course the biggest. However I have been to Normandie 23 times for the annual D-Day events. Also a few times to Belgium and Holland. Our combat troops lost as much as 300% in The ETO. The war was only won if those men and women were willing to enter Northern Europe. In 10 short weeks almost 30,000 Americans died in Normandie and Brittany. Paratrooper regiments entered Normandie on 6 June 1944 with 2000 me. 32 days later the had under 700. For the Infantry, Armored units the casualties were incredible. The Allied Air Campaign according to Albert Speer by 1943, took 40% of German war effort. 40,000 US AIRMEN died over Europe. It’s easy to look at numbers, and come up with such talk as your’s!. However I know and knew many Americans, British, veterans, and some Germans. For the men on the ground it was hell for all of them. Soldiers don’t know much above their own fire teams, squads, and platoons. That is were battles are fought, lost, and won. Your talking the overall big picture. I know as I am a retired US ARMY, Airborne Ranger, Special Forces, and Black Operations , 100% service connected disabled combat veteran myself born in 1945. So yes I am not debating your big picture statistics. However don’t ever say 6 June 1944 to VE Day was easy, because it wasn’t for those who actually fought. I don’t think you have been in combat. However don’t take what I said as personal. It’s just that you struck a nerve when I read your post. Cheers!🙂🙂🙂🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Gene Garren My grandfather served as a medic in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. The U.S took massive casualties. I understand. My point is the Soviet Union lost Millions upon Millions. Yet their sacrifice is less significant in history it’s a fucked up perspective. Soviet jews suffered the majority of the Holocaust. While American Jews were blessed and safe it’s sad...

The film was about the German 4th Panzer Army counterattack to retake the city of Zhitomir in early-December 1943. At the final part of Kiev Offensive Operation, the Soviet 38th Army took Zhitomir on November 12. However, the Wehrmacht XLVIII Panzer Corps was able to halt the Soviet advance and counterattacked on December 5, temporarily retook the city, until the Soviets renewed their offensive (Zhitomir-Berdichev Offensive, Dec 25, 1943-Jan 14, 1944).

@Юрий Тойкичев In fact, the Russian dies early - very early: In the meantime, the Russian lords of creation don't even have an average life expectancy of 65 years. The Russian would therefore hardly benefit from the German pension. And what is the reason for this low age, which the Russian man reaches on average?The Russian smokes and drinks until the bars bend. The Russian man consumes vodka as a matter of course at all times of the day. Does vodka actually lead the Russians to the grave far too early? The fact is that the Russian government is fighting in vain against alcohol abuse. High demands for the sale of spirits and alcohol of all kinds do not help, nor do price increases for vodka and the like: The Russian simply drinks liters of vodka without thinking about the consequences. The Russian man also steps on the gas when it comes to nicotine consumption. Apparently Russian men have no measure and goal to protect their own health. Around a quarter of Russians die before the age of 55.

Some of them have probably been fighting off and on since Poland, France and most have been at the very least since the beginning of Barbarossa. They are worn out shells of their former selves who have probably seen at least 2 or 3 of their really good friends die in front of them, all for only a mile or two of ground after weeks of fighting, in a war fought over a country thousands of miles wide. War is hell and these men walked right through it all, it would be hard to muster up a fake smile, especially if you were drafted.

After four years of fighting, the Wehrmacht were now fighting an enemy, who by December 1943. had outstripped the Germans in almost every area of armament production. Also, Russian tanks far exceeded the number of German tanks, and it was the same story with aircraft production. Added to which was the very large number of fighting men available to fight in the Russian army which the Germans couldn’t hope to match. Also, by the winter of 1943, with the victories of Stalingrad and Kursk behind them, the morale of the Russian solder and officer class was sky high as they knew they held the initiative and by the weight of their artillery, tanks etc, they would succeed in pushing the Germans back until they reached Germany itself.

For non-germans: The speaker mostly describes in short sentences what you see in the film. I tried to translate what is said in the video, though my english is not extremely good: 00:00: On the coast of the Mediterranean sea. Palm branches replace the christmas tree here. 00:20: There is christmas mood at the atlantic coast, too. 00:30: On the eastern front. On a field-airfield of our fighter-planes. A successful fighter pilot is congratulated by the ground crew. His machine was hit in the wing. Squadron Captain Leutnant Lang shot down eight enemy aircraft during this mission and thus achieved his 100th air-victory. As a track and field athlete and medium distance runner, Lieutenand Lang is one of the best-known German athletes. The squad-captain congratulates one of his seargants to his 50ies air-victory. 1:03. At the „great dnjepr bow“ a german counterattack led to the reconquest of the city Zhytomyr. The march (the speaker says “Aufmarsch” i believe this is actually more a gathering) begins. The petrol cans are being filled. In between a little snack: Honey from the honeycomb. In most difficult terrain, the positions for the gathering are manned as planned. 2:02: In the starting-positions. The enemy uses ground-attack-planes (Schlachtenflieger) against the beginning german attack. Multible ground-attack-planes are beeing shot down by our soldiers. 2:50: The german attack in full development. Tiger-tanks take over the attack tip (are in the front of the attack). Swarmed out, our grenadiers attack. On the left at the back of the picture (the film) fleeing Bolsheviks. The german attack advanced to the ?(can’t understand) of the city of Zhytomyr. 4:05: The effect of the german weapons. The city is enclosed from all sides. After a tough struggle, our troops move in to Zhytomyr. The traces of the bitter fighting. The victorious german soldier after the battle. 5:30: After six months of deployment, the submarine of the captainleutnant ? (can’t understand the name) returns from the Indian Ocean to its base. The commander was awarded with the oak leaf to the Ritterkreutz (knights cross) by the Führer (Hitler). He sank 27 ships with 188 gross register tons. The war reporter who brought this film report from the war voyage in the indian ocean. Dolphins play around the bow of the boat. Working on the upper deck when the sea is rough. the effects of the sea water make special care of the guns necessary, especially in tropical waters. Note: In my opinion, the speaking-style is pretty neutral, considering that Germany was in "total war" at the time. You can tell that the target group are "normal people" and not fanatical nazis. no particularly inhuman statements or racist nazi-nonsense or sth.

5:02 from Wikipedia, Battle of Kiev (1943), "The 4th Panzer Army was in deep trouble. However, the situation changed with the arrival of Hermann Balck's XLVIII Panzer Corps, comprising the SS Division Leibstandarte, 1st Panzer Division and 7th Panzer Division. Balck drove his forces north to Brusyliv and then west to retake Zhitomir. Rybalko sent the 7th Guards Tank Corps to counter the German assault. A huge tank battle ensued, which continued until the latter part of November, when the autumn mud halted all operations. With the recapture of Zhitomir and Korosten, the 4th Panzer had gained some breathing room." One of the last offensive successes of the German Army in the East.
