Friedrich Lengfeld was a German officer during World War 2 who gave his life to save a wounded American soldier.
In November 1944, Lengfeld was deployed as a company commander in the Hürtgen Forest. His unit was supposed to secure a minefield against the Americans. After fierce fighting, the German soldiers suddenly heard cries for help and screams of pain from the area in front of them. It was a wounded American soldier lying in the middle of no man's land between the two frontlines. Lengfeld ordered his soldiers not to fire on any approaching American medics so that they could evacuate the wounded soldier.
Since the G.I.'s cries for help continued for hours, Lengfeld ordered his own medics to form a squad to rescue the soldier. As usual, he took the lead and guided his men through the minefield. But just before they reached the wounded American, Lengfeld was suddenly knocked to the ground by a German anti-personnel mine and bled to death.
The American soldiers were so moved by Lengfeld’s actions that they built a monument honoring their former enemy.

Was not friendship it was not kindness it was the most basic of human ethics,,, the reason why Humanity has achieved what we have achieved the reason why with no Claws and crappy teeth and soft skin we are the world's top predator is because we function as a group, what we have here is two men being forced into a similar situation who have no ill-will directly against one another, he responded the way we are hardwired to respond. Only a sociopath would be capable of listening to that and doing nothing, In Antiquity sociopaths were ousted from the group and so their probability of survival diminished remarkably, it is sad that we live in a society where sociopaths are rewarded and encouraged. It does not follow traditional human evolution and it is not how we got to where we are, my god there are Neanderthal remains of an elderly gentleman with multiple serious injuries that would have rendered him useless to the group and yet after all of these injuries he still lived many years which is evident in his bones, we are hardwired to take care of each other. It is not honour it is humanity
