I'm german, and a pen pal from Taiwan was visiting me (a couple of years ago). Everything was nice, and when I showed her the town she was irrtated about two people. She asked me, if they're german. I said, that I think so - why are you irrtated about them? her honest answer was: Because they're laughing. I said to her, that she saw me laughing too, so what's the big deal. Her answer: I thought you made a special effort for me. True story, by the way. Germans have humour, but it's hard to translate.

People do tons of shit that isn't good for them, too much sugar, too much fat, to little movement. BILD is succesful due to clickbaity headlines for their usually inaccurate or wrong articles and its overly simplistic language targeting the lowest common denominator, as well as the fact that its simply been around for much longer than other newspapers meaning some people juat read it because they always read it and their parenta read it. Also its one of the few german newspapers readily availaible in a lot of other countries. And there was something else... oh, yeah, until a few years back they had a half naked women with huge breasts in every issue.

"Germans Can't Cook"???? WHAT??? I grew up in "Germantown" in NYC. We had a lot of German restaurants in the area, always PACKED with patrons, and I enjoyed some of the BEST most "comfort" food I ever tasted! Sniff - I don't live there now, and haven't had any German food in ages. I sure do miss it - Wahhh And German PASTRY... don't get me started on how good THAT is! My favorite stereotype about Germans is that they are "over organized". I bet there are plenty of sloppy Germans. Howewver, I really have no luck restoring vintage German tape recorders. I find the entire stereotype thing ridiculous tbh. In the case of German stereotypes I think it's because people from USA, UK etc. expect Germans to be pretty much the same as they're used to from their own country. "I mean, most of them are white Europeans just like here in . How different can they possibly be?!" and stuff like that. They know that the cultures are quite similar, so any difference seems much bigger than it actually is. It's all about expectations and assumptions in my opinion. Let's take Japan as another example. They're also known for being efficient and hard workers for example, but people don't call it boring in their case because people don't expect them to be the same as where they come from. Or take Japanese TV shows. Who (from the west) understand why the hell those shows with all the speech bubbles, weird sounds, flashing banners etc. make people laugh over there? No one I know. But we don't *expect* to understand them. "It's a different culture after all." (/s) You don't hear people generally claiming that the Japanese don't have a sense of humor. Most people acknowledge that they simply don't get the Japanese humor and they're totally fine with that. It just makes Japan and the Japanese sooo exotic, sooo interesting and soooo "kawaii". Germany doesn't seem as exotic or "kawaii" or whatever to most others from the west, so a lot of people seem to have this "Sigh, they should do it like we do in USA/UK/France/whatever." mentality, since they expect the Europeans cultures to be much more similar than they actually are. Yes, of course Germans are quite similar to Americans, the British, the French, Danes, Italians etc. in a lot of ways, but in a lot of ways they're still quite different. People need to remember that. While Germany isn't as far as away from a lot of us (Geographically as well as culturally.) as Japan is for example, they're still far enough away for it to be a different culture. If you go to Germany and there's something you don't understand, that's your problem. Not theirs. Oh and no, I'm not German btw. I just live nearby so we get to interact with Germans fairly regularly. That means we get to see that they do have humor and that they don't all sound "harsh" or scary or whatever. A lot of people just seem to have to most crazy stereotypes about Germany and Germans for some reason. No clue why really.. Maybe they just never met a German at all. I mean, if it's possible to convince North Koreans that Americans have horns, I guess you can also remain ignorant about Germans.. :/

There is the Nord Sea chain of fish restaurants as well, which would never exist in Ireland. In Munich had many delicious meals, but then I love pork, spuds sauces etc. Finally, to describe the British tabloids as "newspapers" is an insult to real newspapers. Sex and celebrity scandal sheets, aimed at the unthinking masses.

My theory why british food is or at least has been terrible, is because aof the long period of rationalisation of goods and food after the war. If I recall correctly a documentation I once saw, they used to boil vegetables in plain water and butchers had to slaughter and sell e.g. old horses up to the sixties and seventies. So english food was at least terrible and had lost its inspiration. Somewhen came curry along and with chefs like jamie Oliver the english cuisine is on it´s way.
@5bagsofpopcorn

I think the biggest stereotype about english cusine is the "boiling vegetables" part. And in fact, at a couple of hotels there the vegetables were just cooked. But on the other hand, you have things like the british breakfast which balances it out.

the misconception of mr. bean is that he's one of the few 'comedians' from an english speaking country that germans (even older ones) know - because his 'comedy' isn't language based, but just classical slapstick, that doesn't need to be translated. if you ask an average german about funny comedians, mr. bean probably isn't mentioned that often. instead the majority would probably refer to german comedians that most people in english speaking countries dont know.

Mr. Bean IS funny. (well, except for those americanized movies ofcourse) I don't get why in GB he's just a "meh" kind of thing, like, "oh yeah, it was funny the first time but it gets old fairly quickly". I'm kind of sad that so many amazing british comedy series always end up having only a few episodes. (Mr. bean, Green Wing, etc.) While they would have had more than enough potential to create at least double or tripple as much episodes without them getting boring.
@rewboss
@rewboss 9 жыл бұрын
The reason he is, for Brits, a "meh" kind of thing is that, as I said, humour is a product of culture. Mr Bean is pretty much all slapstick, and although it's very clever slapstick, it's still slapstick. And quite simply, Germans enjoy slapstick a lot more than the British do. Mr Bean kept going because he sells well abroad (no translation needed), but the later episodes and the movies were for export, not for domestic consumption. Even Rowan Atkinson dislikes Mr Bean -- Blackadder was a far more interesting anti-hero to play. There's a practical reason, by the way, why British series have so few episodes. Unlike their American counterparts, British producers like to work with a much smaller creative circle, and also prefer to focus on a few characters rather than have to assemble a larger ensemble cast so that the actors can get some time off work. And finally, the philosophy is that quantity always comes at the expense of quality.
@DerKork

I think it also has to do with the fact that word-based humour is harder (or virtually impossible) to translate to foreign audiences than physical comedy. You can't easily take a play on words and simply translate it into german draining the humour.

rewboss Many of us Americans also liked the Black Adder...Bennie Hill, Monty Python and the Young Ones along with Mr. Bean is what most Americans think British humor is...
@rewboss
@rewboss 9 жыл бұрын
Keith Duncan Blackadder is much more typical British humour than Mr Bean, but it doesn't travel so well, and is notoriously difficult to translate into other languages. Mr Bean always did much better abroad, especially in Germany, than it ever did in the UK. Benny Hill is also better appreciated in cultures where slapstick is more usual, but he did latch on to the slightly saucy comedy that was in vogue in Britain in the 60s and 70s -- it couldn't be made now. Monty Python does well abroad for its slapstick element, but there's a much deeper level to it that you can only really appreciate if you're familiar with Britain in the 1970s (although some sketches, such as the one where a man is attempting to persuade a merchant banker to make a charity donation, still ring true today). The Young Ones is an interesting animal. Like the Pythons, they made a conscious effort to break free of what was considered "conventional" (in that sense, they're not as typical as you might suppose), and like the Pythons, they were university graduates who were able to slip in a lot of subtext under the veneer of tomfoolery. But the whole show was based around characters that Mayall, Edmonson and Planer had been performing on stage individually, as sketches, in turn based on characters they had known in real life. Here's a young Mayall, performing a character based on a terrible poet he had once seen on stage, the prototype of the wannabe revolutionary he went on to play in The Young Ones: Rik Mayall - Poetry.

Rowan Atkinsons role as Mr.Bean gets introduced to most Germans and Austrians quite early in school. So we kinda grow up with him and lets face it, a bunch of bored kids with 8hrs+ of school and then most likely 2-4hrs of homework will enjoy the fuck out of the series. Later on we also often get introduced to Black Adder and we quite enjoy the sarcasm and black humor but as a starter that would be a bit much for children who at best can understand a few sentences.

Because I like the Japanese popculture and street style (I don't know if my English sounds stupid!)! Aaaaannd... Why do you live in Germany for so long?

One week London didn't yield any eatable food, except an really expensive Italian restaurant and Chinese food in Chinatown... Really: I've seen good food from the Irish and from the Scots, but I've never seen British food that deserves the word "tasty"... :/ And: Yes, I was surprised to hear that the British think that Germans can't cook :D However, due to our central position in Europe, it's hard to distinguish what's "really" German and what's come from abroad... Especially Italian food somehow got heavily mixed up with German food nowadays. It's easy to see that Pasta and Pizza are from Italy, but Broccoli was actually introduced, when my mom was already a teenager, while I always thought that it's native to German cuisine :D

Does the english word "newspaper", that you used to describe the BILD, always (or at least regularly) mean the spreading of reliable and serious information? Because if it does, you used it utterly wrong. Because BILD is, as you surely know, something like the german equivalent to the british SUN.

Blocking off sun loungers with towels is a no-go. As for the humour - just because one cannot understand the humour in the other side, it doesn't mean they don't have any - it's just different. And there are just as many Germans behaving like the big kings on hols. But I think overall this is a matter of personal behaviour and has not really anything to do with a nationality :-)

I can say this for Germans: We immerse ourselves in negativity, always complaining about the negative things while disregardingly taking the positive sides of any thing for granted. In that case, the Brits are a few years, decades or maybe even centuries ahead of us: They just apply cynicism instead. But we're getting there.

When I lived in Germany in the 1980s, a German newspaper reported that Germans rated number one in the world for per capita alcohol consumption. The article snidely remarked, "Nice going, Germany!" As for getting drunk, one only need to go to Oktoberfest, there one can hear plenty of German and English slurring and the sound of people vomiting is the same. German humor lacks sarcasm. German humor is mostly harmless, being careful not to offend. I like German food, it's hearty and delicious, especially with a glass of Pils. Pork and kidney pie is good too, also the fish and chips in Scarborough. I heard that Riga, Latvia, is popular for young Brits to get drunk and hit on the pretty, young blonde girls.

The worst thing about Germany is that whipped cream usually isn't sweetened.
@KonradTheWizzard
@KonradTheWizzard 2 жыл бұрын
Actually it usually is sweetened. Ohh, wait. Are you American? Those damned Germans are using metric again - no wonder they use far too little sugar! It's supposed to be a gallon of sugar per pound of cream, not just a liter per kg of cream! ;-) The normal German recipe is: 1 cup of cream (150g, about 5 ounces), 1 table spoon of sugar (2 on certain high holidays), optionally 1 tea spoon of starch (to make it stiffer); whip it till your hand falls off or the electric stirrer begins to smell of burned plastic. Cut it into pieces and serve with cake. I had the opposite problem with lots of American (and a few British) dishes - too much sugar, not enough other flavour.
@Maxime_K-G
@Maxime_K-G 2 жыл бұрын
@@KonradTheWizzard No, I'm actually Belgian! ;-) I've been far from everywhere and I haven't tried whipped cream directly from the grocery store which is why I wrote "usually" but the fact that I have encountered and been infuriated by this every single time we had whipped cream in Germany and nowhere else made me think this was a regional norm, something old fashioned y'all kept around. Much like how French people insist that Fanta with pulp (a.k.a. Orangina) is somehow better and Brits who eat toast sandwiches unironically. It's strange to hear that you haven't even heard of it. Maybe it's just a Southern thing, that's where we've spend most of our German holidays anyways.
@KonradTheWizzard
@KonradTheWizzard 2 жыл бұрын
@@Maxime_K-G The raw cream sold in the stores is unsweetened, you add as much sugar as you want. The stuff in spay cans ...well it's insideous stuff in spray cans with hidden sugars to make you crave it, but it's not as bad as e.g. the USA. One table spoon of sugar, as we Germans usually do, is barely enough to make cream taste okay. It doesn't make it taste really sweet. Many German restaurants are on the "health train" lately and reduce the sugar further - esp. if you find words like "bio" or "natural" on the menu. Since I'm German myself and not used to very sweet stuff it isn't enough for me to complain about, but I have noticed it in some restaurants. I think it would be quite noticable to someone who is used to really sweet whipped cream. The German philosophy in cooking is shifting more and more towards "your ingredients should be tasty enough to be good without sugar making them palatable" and "if you need more sugar you did something wrong". BTW: you have to toast British bread or it tastes like a stale sponge. Eating soft (untoasted) sandwiches from shops in Britain is quite enlightening - I'm now convinced that it was originally spelled "sand witch" and was named because it tastes like a witch'es feet after a walk on the beach that was about as long as the bread was lying in the fridge...
