It's quite interesting that these gun-based point defense SPAA's made during the Cold War era became phased out and considered obsolete due to surface to air missiles becoming the primary way of taking down aircraft, but are now making a resurgence in places such as the Ukraine war due to how much drones are being used. A missile simply would not be very cost effective for shooting down a drone, while autocannons are perfect for it.

West Germany was the only western country that developed gun based anti-aircraft in parallel to rocket based ones. The Gepard was originally designed to keep the air over a battlefield clear of enemy helicopters and low flying planes. The guns have a maximum range of 6km, its radar range is 10km. So even if not able to reach the target with the gun, it can share the target data with systems that are able, for example Patriot. That also works reverse, it can use target data from other sources. In the early 2000s there was a project to make them work completely autonomous, remote controlled by a personal computer. But that project was ended due to the fact that it was too costly for the German government back then. Also a modernisation was considered being to expensive and not necessary due to the fact there are other anti-aircraft systems in the army like the Ozelot (ocelot) that is rocket based. And gun based systems have a lot of advantages. The "Nächstbereichsschutz MANTIS" that can even intercept mortar and artillery shells in the air is proof that gun based systems are still a thing. But MANTIS is for the protection of camp sites, not for whole countries, since it is not as mobile as the Gepard (Cheetah). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MANTIS_Air_Defence_System
@cgi20028 ай бұрын
@@Marcel_Germannthat's not even close to been true when you do some actual research. While West Germany was one of only a handful of NATO powers that developed a rapidly mobile land vehicle mounted gun based system (thats a key factor, static systems are a seperate entity altogether). Turkey, South Korea, the Swiss (working with Germany admittedly), Sweden and the UK all developed cannon based systems extensively throughout the cold War, some are even newer than that or have been extensively modernised and remain in inventory or as front line air defence to this day. Hell even the US made a prototype one that ultimately went nowhere, only been cancelled in 1985. Russia also developed a fairly famous one, the tunkuska (even the newer Pantsir includes autocannons alongside its missiles), China also has one as does Serbia. You'll also note that every country listed here also uses missile based air defence systems (some even use systems that combined both missiles and cannons into a single unit). It is worth noting however many of the countries I listed used shared R&D to develop their missile based systems rather than developing those alone like the cannon based systems. Also many countries developed similar systems for ships, and a few of those were later adapted for land use. A good example is the Phylanx CIWS was developed into the LPWS (Land Phylanx weapon system). This is one of many CRAM systems that use cannon fire as atleast part of the setup. Some other CRAM systems were developed from the ground up and use cannons as part of their setup, mind you not all do, for example Iron dome does not.

Its truly ironic how the german army retired this vehicle about 20 years ago believing it to be obsolete and nowadays the german army is lacking any dedicated and automated anti air solution to counter drones. Not that the arms industry couldn't provide a solution, the defence ministry just isn't ordering any. Thing is germany hasn't really reached the drone age yet. Recon drones yes, but drones as a weapon system have first been ignored, then have been condemned for the longest time, calling the use of weaponized drones unethical, reasoning that these systems would be putting to much distance between the operating soldier and the target, therefore dehumanizing the target and making the decision to kill too easy. As if any modern weapon system wasn't causing this exact thing already, as if letting your troops on the ground go with limited or without close air support was more ethical. Delusional moral grandstanding, nothing more. Hope things will change and appropriate gear while be acquired, probably not gonna happen anytime soon though.

1. 🇩🇪 has started planning and developing a complex, layered and networked system ("LVS NNbS") to cover everything from tiny FPV drones and C-RAM to cruise missiles since 2021, so before the war even began. Why do you think these companies suddenly have systems like Iris-T SLM, Iris-T SLS, Skyranger 30, Skyranger 35, Skynex and Sky Warden NNbS on offer? Rheinmetall, Diehl and Hensoldt are all contractors of the LVS NNbS program. 🇩🇪 just signed the first procurement contracts, including for Boxer based Skyranger 30 that are even better than Skynex for defeating drone swarms. Procurement will be in steps, the first step is introducing these systems and creating initial capabilities that will then be expanded upon. At the same time Patriot missile production capabilities are built in Bavaria, Patriot effectors are being upgraded and the Israeli ARROW III ballistic missile defense system is being procured as part of Germany's European Sky Shield Initiative that 15 nations have joined so far. 2. Germany has started procuring large, armed Israeli Heron TP drones. 3. The whole independent air-defense service was dissolved in 2010 due to the pressures to somehow finance American demands (under NATO §5) for 🇩🇪 troops in 🇦🇫, the Bundeswehr providing at times 10-15% of it's land army to prop up ISAF - just for comparison that's comparable to the strain the Iraq War put on the 🇺🇸 Army!

yeah, but that's the general statement about a LOT of NATO equipment that was sent to Ukraine, a LOT of it was designed back in the 60's, 70's and 80's to counter Soviet Designs, by our standards we'd rather get the new stuff as they're getting on the old side and start requiring more maintenance, and they're working brilliantly, as we can see by the results on the field, and whilst Gepard and similar AA systems basically became obsolete due to the capabilities of Jet Aircraft they're a Brilliant solution to Drones as it is more cost effective

It's not exactly a moving it back. You see, the guns on these tanks and the ammunition for it were manufactured by Oerlikon back in the day, a swiss company. Nowadays it is owned by Rheinmetall, which is why they can produce the ammo at other factories. Not sure though what would have happened with ammo supplies if Germany had been caught in a war, back when we were still using the Gepard. Also we're working on a new iteration of this concept. @@Mirage-pz I didn’t see anyone calling Wagner “war-heros” during the mutiny. Wagner was still the terrorist group they were before, except then they were also terrorizing Russian military. Back then did people in the west want the mutiny to go on for as long as possible? Yes, not because we agree with anything they say, but because it messes with Putin and helps Ukraine. I didn’t see anyone respect Wagner more for doing that.

A Alligator helicopter has way more range than a Gepard. What I heard is this besides the mines one of the main issues that Ukraine has on the frontline. You need a s200/300, hawk, iris t system on the frontline. Or fighter jets with long range missiles like the meteor.
