#shorts The Gepard is equipped with two 35mm Oerlikon KDA autocannons, establishing it as one of the most potent self-propelled anti-aircraft guns globally. No missile, no mortar can evade the Gepard’s relentless destruction. But its true specialty lies in countering drones.

Whu don't they repurpose these for armored support when storming tree lines? At 1,100 rounds per minute, the enemy trenches would be evacuated in solids or liquids and their cover would be obliterated. That's also been the difference for Ukraine in making sustainable progress. They don't have close ground support. If Russia were fighting the U.S., there would be no trenches because the tree lines would be annihilated as soon as Russia moved into them.

They're too valuable to be used in the frontline. They have expensive radar and firecontrol suites @Ericsaidful and Ukraine only has less than a hundred of them. You bring up the very valid point of missing support. There's many ways to go about this. One way would be to just give them way more artillery. Assault guns or even light tanks could also work. As of now, for lack of more specialized equipment, they're using almost exclusively main battles tanks. Personally, I think they need more AA first, then artillery, and only then other stuff.

Hi I am German. As I learned about these tanks I heard they simply were obselete in the eyes of our defense strategy. Since these AA tanks relises to much on tank operators. Meaning a lot of money needs to be spend into training and maintaining them. Since Germans doctrine was always only defending its allies and borders they shifted to more stationary installments. It also meant fewer operators, since they can be operated from far distances like drones. But its great that our cats still show their potential in actual warfare, since during Cold War they really never seen actual action.
@Killerpixel11

It's not a German problem. All the western militaries fell on their ass with their air defense strategy. That strategy consisting of merely "let the USAF handle it, lol" There's very few SHORAD systems in western militaries that aren't missile based, which makes them a bad choice against drones. Even Gepard, good as it is, is too expensive to field in the numbers that would realistically be needed. That's the case for most of them. Skyranger (on either Boxer or Piranha) might be a decent choice, once it's actually being fielded.

@Killerpixel11 It's not so much that as it is the mentality that short-range anti-aircraft systems were obsolete. And they were - until drones became a thing. Since Germany reduced its forces it was obselete, they rely today to much on stationary AA weapons, which could be operated by a single team in far distances, like drone operators. The Gepard is great for those that have the manpower to operate. But since Germany basically halved it forces, in their eyes these kind of AA tanks were useless. The last few that could be bought are in the Ukraine now and I am really happy that they can help protect the Ukrainian people. I don't think the Ukrainians would sell a single unit in this situation. I always was convinced that the gepard was an important and very capable system and I always was convinced that it was a stupid decision that the German army phased them out. Specially because it was obvious, that drones would become an important factor a vew years later. But obviously no one took this serious in the German politics or in the ranks of the German generals. Now the gepard shows how good and important this system is.

The russians have state controlled munition factories and still can convert normal factories into a munition creating factory. Its an old soviet principle.
