GERMANY: "absolute cold-bloodedness and brutality" Mafia-like conditions from the Netherlands in NRW!
A spectacular operation took place in the tranquil Cologne district of Rodenkirchen: last Friday evening, a special operations unit (SEK) freed two hostages who had been brutally tortured by their kidnappers. Michael Esser, criminal director of the Cologne police, speaks of a new dimension of violence in organized crime, the likes of which was previously unknown in Germany.
The background to the kidnapping was said to be organized crime in the drug sector, with demands for money involved. The police operation was extremely complex and characterized by extreme threat scenarios in which submachine guns played a role. In order to protect the lives of the hostages, three perpetrators had to escape.
The "Mocro Mafia", known for its brutality and targeted explosions, has its origins in the Netherlands. These criminal groups are also continuing their conflicts in North Rhine-Westphalia. Oliver Huth from the Association of German Criminal Police Officers (BDK) stresses that these groups do not respect any borders and pose a significant threat.
The liberalization of cannabis legislation and the resulting black market are further fueling the drug mafia's business. For NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul, the operation in Cologne shows that the police are taking decisive action against drug gangs.
The Dutch criminologist Cyrille Fijnaut stresses that organised crime in the Netherlands is characterised by many different groups, not just the "Mocro Mafia". To combat it effectively, he recommends that the German police set up a supra-regional task force.
