Germany's defence ministry believes it will need at least 75,000 additional troops to fulfil its NATO commitments as the alliance adapts to face what it sees as an increasingly hostile Russia.

There are costs to modernize barracks and facilities to help make serving in the armed forces attractive to both fresh recruits and experienced soldiers. Remaking a military from a small professional force of volunteers into a much larger one based on the draft requirements will require revamped training methods and military doctrine to handle the employment of thousands of conscripts. Then we come to the real test, at the end of the compulsory training period how do we persuade people in 2024 that it is a good idea to stay with the armed forces?"
