Using this method, I got three internships in high school, without any experience or connection to a single company! My Princeton admissions officer later told me in PERSON that this experience was a big factor in my being accepted!
So, how do you get a summer job in high school? Will doing an internship get you into the Ivy League? How do you go about getting a letter of recommendation, possibly from a CEO?
This video includes a step-by-step process on how to get the summer internship that will get you accepted into your dream school. No matter which college you apply to, admissions officers cannot overlook a college-level internship in your extracurricular section of your application.

Video Sparknotes:
- A high school summer internship looks fantastic on your college application. In fact, I've been told personally, by the person that reviewed my Princeton application, that the internship I undertook at a local startup was a huge bonus to my application.
- If you couldn't find any through your connections, don't worry. I was in the same situation as you. This video includes a step-by-step process on how to get your dream internship with no connections at all.
Things to consider when making your list:
- Go through the top 100 fastest growing companies in your local city (lists can easily be Google'd)
- Startups are much more likely to give high school students internships than big companies are
- When you write a college application, your aim should be to write a story, and this story has to be a clear and focused one in which everything relates to each other. That's why the company you work at has to relate to the other things you're doing, or else it just looks like padding. Keep the company's product/service in line with one of your passions!
- a resume is a document that should list your GPA, the honors classes that you've taken, the clubs that you're leadership in, or even a part of, the programs you've participated in, any special skills you have, languages, and your contact information.
- There are two goals of the cover letter. The first is to introduce yourself and to show all the skills that you have, and demonstrate your passions and skills to the employer. And second, to show the employer how these skills can be used in their business.
- Address your letter to the CEO directly. Don't dance around the point, tell them straight up that you want to intern at their company, and here's why, and here's my resume.
- By saying things like “I’m willing to work for minimum wage” and “I can take care of my transportation,” you show that you really want to work there, and are not just doing this for padding (even if you are). The less resources the company has to use to employ you, the greater the chance of their CEO giving you a shot.
- Steer clear of weak language, i.e. "I want" or "I think." Instead, think more like: My experience in (insert activity I do that relates to this business here) will prove useful when doing x, y, or z at your firm.
- Make sure the cover letter you're sending to each company is different, and that you mention different things you've done that directly relate to that company, excluding things that don't really 'fit.'
- Don't send your cover letter as an email with the resume as an attachment. Instead, send a printed letter and resume in a physical envelope, addressed to the CEO.

8:50 This is all much easier when you've actually done stuff. Many students were never involved in a fundraiser, let alone ran their own online "business". "My resume is enclosed - you'll see that I showed up to nearly 95% of my classes on time, did my homework and achieved high success on my tests, which granted me very competitive grades. Last, but not least, I also took part in two different clubs. And that's the extent of my professional success so far". 😂

I heard that normally summer camps at colleges aren’t going to help much in applications, unless it’s one of the prestigious ones you have to apply to to get in (like the Stanford math summer camp and RSI, the latter being a really big boost in college apps) Or if your local college offers classes, so those. I’m lucky that I live near Princeton and our high school offers courses there during the year for the top math and science students. If your high school offers something similar, do it

Did you just contact these companies just ask them if you could be an intern or were they looking for interns or people they could hire? Like is it disrespectful if I call a company and ask them if I could be an intern?
@CollegeAdvisor
@CollegeAdvisor 6 жыл бұрын
I would advise against cold-calling companies for a number of reasons. 1) Nobody likes cold calls. Thousands of automated spam calls are sent out every day, and everyone associates 'cold-calling' with the sleazy telemarketer who isn't selling anything that you're interested in. 2) When you simply call a company out of the blue, you're not sure what's going on at the moment-- maybe a huge client is requesting a seemingly impossible deadline, and they have no time to talk to you, so they hang up immediately. If you had sent them a letter, they could've checked it out a few days later once everything settled down, and may have considered you. 3) Unless you're a really great speaker, it's going to be very hard to get out everything you want to say (all of the things you've done, why you want to work for the company, your GPA, etc.) without being questioned or interrupted. It's much better to simply send them this information in letter form... if they're interested, they'll read your resume after the cover letter. If not they won't, but that's why you sent out 10 letters instead of 1, right? 4) When you randomly call a company, what are you trying to ask for? An interview right on the spot? Even if the person on the other end likes you, they most likely have to discuss whether to hire you with other people, and it's awkward to tell you to hold while you're on the phone with them and they know hardly anything about you. They'd have to retell your whole story to the other people there (which will be dumbed down and summarized) and are then in a high-pressure situation deciding whether to hire you. Overall, I would just follow the steps I laid out in the video instead of cold-calling. Make sure you provide your cell-phone number or email in your cover letter, and wait for THEM to respond to YOU.

Hey Greg! My name is Ariel. I’m a rising junior in high school, I moved from China two years ago. I was so confused by the American college application process and all the stuff that comes after it. Your channel has helped me so much! Thank you! Also, I feel that I can relate to some of your experience. I am fluent in Cantonese, English, and Mandarin. I’ve been tutoring kids in the countryside of China online in English, and kids at my school in New York in Mandarin. I found it really fun to be the “cultural bridge” and I wanna develop more of that in my junior year. For example, developing my “tutoring brand” and expand the number of students that I tutor, or starting a channel to talk about my experiences. I don’t know how to phrase this, but do you have any advise on developing your interest into a concrete experience as a high school student? (What I meant by concrete experience: some real world accomplishments that would grow you as a person and impress colleges on your resume.) I feel that other kids who have an interest in languages, marketing, Internet, or other areas might be benefited from it too. I’m a first generation college student so I’m trying to figure my way out! I’m so glad that I found your channel on KZfaq, thanks for doing this, it’s very helpful! Again, thank you for taking your time reading this! Looking forward to hear from you. Have a great day, Ariel

Hi Ariel, Thanks so much for watching my videos and leaving your comment! Sorry for my late response-- I'm in Beijing right now at an 8-week intensive language-study summer program (it's called Princeton in Beijing), so my WiFi connection can be spotty at times. Your situation sounds really interesting! I wish I was at a level where I could tutor kids in Chinese... guess that's why I'm now in Beijing, haha. Anyway, I think starting up a KZfaq channel is a fantastic way to both expand your tutoring base AND give colleges some validation of your Chinese fluency. I would say if you did videos like "Common Mistakes Beginner Mandarin Chinese Students Make" or "What is the difference between Chinese and Cantonese," you could attract a lot of potential tutoring students (you can use Skype to tutor them and make extra cash!) If you're looking to start a KZfaq channel, I highly recommend checking out Brian Dean's channel. He goes into a lot of detail on how to make your videos rank high in the search results-- this is really important if you want to gain subscribers! Using his tips, with just 4 videos, I've gained almost 4,000 subscribers, definitely recommend. Another thing you could do is create a 'China club' at your school, if that doesn't already exist, where you watch Chinese movies and discuss Chinese culture during lunch at school. I think the club should be conducted in English too though, so that you can attract students who may not speak Chinese, but are interested in the culture as well. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns! - Greg

Greg Smith Hi Greg, Haha, no worries! I remember my struggles craving for VPN to get on KZfaq in Guangzhou. Anyways, Wow, these are some great tips! I will definitely consider them and start working on my channel this summer. thank you for taking your time to help me! (It means more than you think! :D I went to Beijing three years ago, the vibe there is so different from Guangzhou, where I came from. The culture there is really rich and when you chat with the taxi drivers, they have a lot of interesting stories to tell! (And Beijing Duck is the best) Btw, have you considered making some videos about your experience in Beijing/your years of studying abroad in China? Thanks again for your help! Hope u have a great day! -Ariel

Yes, I went to 后海 today with some friends, and on the way there, we talked to the taxi driver about recent developments in China, and compared them to the USA. Taxi drivers really know a lot about society and Chinese culture (much different than your typical Uber driver!) I might make some videos on China, but I think right now those wouldn't really interest my current subscriber base. When I get bigger, I'll be able to talk about this experience in more detail. Hope you have a great summer as well! - Greg

I didn't start the internship I mentioned in this video until the week after the 4th of July (around July 10th). There's still time! Stop giving yourself excuses and start writing those cover letters! You'll find that startups are much more flexible about your hours than big corporations are. Also, if you want to be sure you get something (it is a little late), you can offer to work unpaid. This will almost guarantee you a spot somewhere. An unpaid internship may not sound great, but if it helps you get into a better college, it can pay out in the hundreds of thousands down the line.. think about the future! :) Best of luck -Greg

What do you do if your high school doesn’t offer honours/ap/ib courses? Do I take them online while I am in school everyday as well? There is no good school around that I would want to transfer to that offers them. I will transfer if I need to though and if it is a nessesity to get into university. I don’t want to risk my chances of not being accepted because of that.

I am a junior in high school right now and I have been considering getting an internship in the summer. I never had the ability to because every summer we travel abroad to meet family in India. I also dont know if I will be able to get an internship this summer because i have to travel again. By then i would be a senior and it would probably be too late. Not only does it make it more difficult to do internships, but I also cant take part in summer programs that can help in my college application. I want to do my internship in an engineering company and I have connections since my dad is an engineer and I can be an intern at his work. I don't really know what else to do for my resume. I'm in some clubs but I never really got leadership positions and I have some volunteer experience. Is there anything else I would have to do to increase my chances of getting into a good college besides internships, volunteering, good gpa and sat scores, or summer programs? I am mostly a loner and any hobbies I have are done on my own. I usually do computer programming or sketch designs in a sketchbook. I'm interested in computer science and engineering (mechanical and electronics) but I'm not great at talking to others. I can express myself through essay or powerpoint, and working in a team is easy for me when a goal has to be achieved. I've asked counselers in my school for help, but they only confuse me more. A reply from anyone would be nice as it would greatly help.
