Paige Long is a world-renowned flutist. She’s also one of a small number of people who can play the three largest flutes in the flute family: the double subcontrabass, the subcontrabass and the contrabass. With tubing that stretches up to 22 feet in length, these instruments require a strong set of lungs to be able to carry a tune. But, as the director of New England’s all-flute orchestra, Long is a bit of an expert. Let her blow you away.

The flutes: the lowest maintenance of the woodwinds, but the hardest to learn The saxes: you can either have the worst sound or the sexiest sound The clarinet: the lower the note, the more beautiful it is The trumpet: want your head explode in seconds? then try playing the high notes!!! The trombone: precision is key...or you would sound like a middle school kid The tuba: the base that always gets overseen by percussion Percussion/String/Key: Admit it. Your parents wanted you to play *one* (mainly string or key) of those three types of instruments...

@@soleileil agreed, although I do think that if you were to try clarinet you would more than likely pick it up quickly. Funny thing is a lot of reed instruments, mins double reeds of course, are pretty similar to each other.

I grew up in the 80's and 90's and and this is very reminiscent of Sesame Street from when I was growing up! Sure it might be appealing to children, but a lot of people that are watching these are adults, and to be honest I really did not enjoy the pandering... It was quite annoying. Sorry. :-(

"They actually play the lowest possible notes of an orchestral instrument." No, they don't. The double contrabass flute's lowest note is the C one octave below the cello's lowest note. The double bass can also play this low, assuming it has the C extension (something which is required for much of the orchestral repertoire). The contrabassoon can play a whole step lower than that, and is exceedingly more common than this flute. Contrabass clarinets also commonly feature extensions which allow then to play as low as the double bass or even the contrabassoon. There's also the tuba, which (with four pistons) can play a half step lower than the double contrabass flute. Using pedal tones, the tuba can also play even lower than any of these instruments, though the tone quality may suffer.

No crap, although possible. My bass clarinet in its case weighs 15lbs and well, its not hard, just a little straining after 15 minutes. Might be death for ppl that are used to light instruments

I loved it. It was fun, and was refreshing. Nostalgic too, yet new. Theres no reason to be so uptight. In no way was this patronizing. Grow up. What are you? 13 and refuse anything playful or reminiscent of being child-like?

I’m a flute player, all I’m saying is that flutes are built inefficiently. They take so much air and 60% of it is useless.

Bob Ross they don't take up that much air..? I mean I can hold out a note for 20+ seconds....

They’re the second instrument that takes the most air because they have such a short tubing. Just because you can hold a note for 20+ seconds long doesn’t mean that you can hold it for long while playing a piece.

The lower octave of the flute takes more air than higher notes.
