Orchestration 102: The Wind Section by Thomas Goss
Video 4 of 29 for Orchestration 102: The Wind Section
The wind section is made up of several different families: the flutes, oboes, clarinets and bassoons and each family has its own, unique way of producing sound. This courses first section explains each family's playing characteristics including tone production, breathing, embouchure, fingering articulations and much, much more.
Then, Maestro Goss opens up his orchestration guidebook and takes you on a scoring journey. It is in this section that you learn all about score positions, section sizes, seating plans, transposing instruments and registers. We are so pleased to have such a great instructor like Thomas Goss teach orchestration to our members. His insight, attention to detail and educational skills are second to none. He is this generations Lenny Bernstein in the way he cheerfully demystifies the wonderful art of orchestration.
So join Thomas Goss and his team of top professional orchestral musicians as they take you on an in-depth orchestration adventure.

We have to use these candy cane flutes more often in bands and orchestras, they sound so nice. Don’t forget the contra flutes. Why not use them too (like the contra-alto and contrabass)? Maybe put a microphone attachment and they’ll be loud enough to hum some great sounding bass notes. P.S. I call the alto and bass “candy canes” too, but the contra flutes I call “4’s” XD

What about saxophones? By this point they should be seen as serious orchestral instrument. They can also double other instruments in F like the cor anglais or French horn. Saxophones are extremely versatile. Also brass was more noticeably missing. So many pieces have been written with brass so that was really surprising.

If you want to be pedantic, the bass flute sounds more in the standard tenor vocal range. So to restructure the family, Bass is now Tenor, Contra-alto is Baritone, Contrabass is Bass, Subcontrabass is Sub-bass, and Double Contrabass is Contrabass.

Little correction and explanations for the French translations : It's not called a "Grande flûte" but "une flûte traversière". And the piccolo is... le piccolo, most of time. People understand "la petite flûte" but don't really use this name. "La flûte en sol" is also called "la flûte alto".
@OrchestrationOnline
@OrchestrationOnline 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, I used the names that are written in orchestral scores. I've read hundreds of scores published in France, and I've yet to read the words "une flûte traversière" in the left-hand margin.

is there any alto flute with a b foot key?
@Granyala
@Granyala 7 жыл бұрын
They exist. Essentially you'd play an #F as the lowest note. Only very few makers (e.g: Eva Kingma) add these feet though, b/c the alto is heavy and long enough already. :D

Altos can already play B. They don’t need a B footjoint to play it.

It's not a song, it's an original piece composed by Thomas Goss, the creator of this course. I don't think it's available online (yet) :(
