In this video I’m going assemble a sector-balanced and diversified portfolio of 11 large cap UK companies which will not only generate a higher dividend yield than the FTSE 100 but will have shown a higher share price growth over the last 5 years. The portfolio will also pay out dividends every month compared to quarterly payments from a typical FTSE 100 Exchange Traded Fund. For full transparency, of the individual companies mentioned in this video, I own shares in AstraZeneca, BAE Systems, British American Tobacco, National Grid, Shell and Rio Tinto.

About time you added LGEN to your own portfolio! Brilliant video, very useful, thank you. I certainly need to diversify my portfolio as I’m heavily weighted in financials - I had expected that high interest rates make lenders richer, which it does, and therefore share prices would rise, which they don’t.

Thanks so much. I also thought the banks would do better but I guess interest rates went up a bit too quickly and that creates a lot of uncertainly that many loans might not be repaid

@@TheCompoundingInvestor Some of their assets also take a hit on the books, since they were likely bought during periods of low interest rates preceding the hikes. There's also an extra dimension of risk when insurers like LGEN and universal banks like HSBA buy up distressed entities. Still, it's very hard to lose money, after a careful review, on a big financial bought below or close to book value. Since they are also predictably cyclical like mining stocks, you could enhance your yield and holding by deploying extra cash every time the price dips to your buy point. The downside, as highlighted above, is having to live through the swings. Eventually the market will reprice upwards back towards book value + expected income, but there can be a wait especially if the economy slows or inflation remains silly. :)

I like these type of videos. You should do a video that shows the difference between inesting £100 a month and a £1000 a month over 10 years to see how mich difference it could make on your return. Oh also, i wanted to know what was your long term goal with IUSA ETF? What are you going to do once it goes over the dividend allowance? Are you going to use that bed and ISA transaction that you mentioned before? Won't you lose out by doing that because they exchange it on the current market lrice and not at the price you orginally bought it for? And i dont understand why you dont have room for the IUSA in your ISA. Is there some kind of limit on the number of different shares you can have in an ISA?
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
I still have around 50-60k outside the ISA so therefore can't keep everything inside. I shift across 20k a year from the GIA to the ISA and it is all the highest dividend payers I move across. Because of the tax changes over recent years I have to be very careful what I hold outside of the ISA. This is why I've gone for things that I would not normally buy like Croda, SMT and IUSA. These will remain outside of the ISA. I still have plenty of Diageo to move across which pays a higher dividend. I also have lots of Rolls Royce outside the ISA but that currently does not pay a dividend. My dividends outside the ISA are well below the limit currently. Will become more challenging however in future years.

I remember in 2009 when Taylor Wimpey crashed to 22p during the credit crunch. House builders can be highly cyclical. They stopped paying dividends at the time and that is often a sign that the bottom is close. Then as the economy picks up again the house builders recover and so the cycle repeats every decade or so.

Looks like they already cut the dividend not long ago. Taylor Wimpey and Barrett are around the 9% mark and that’s pretty scary especially with a mortgage crises unfolding and property prices falling. I doubt those yields are sustainable in the current climate.

Is Berkshire Hathaway good for UK based investors.
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
It certainly has a great track record of you look at the share price chart. Up 10% this year and up 81% over the last 5 years. Also no dividend withholding tax as they don’t pay a dividend. Obviously past performance is no guarantee of future returns but a great track record for sure. I have exposure to them as I have a decent holding in an S&P500 ETF. My platform does not allow me to buy fractional shares however. Just a single Berkshire Hathaway share now costs half a million dollars!

@@TheCompoundingInvestor Thanks for your reply. Trading 212 can do BRKA as fractional and BRKB as whole shares. A 0.15% FX fee is payable.

hullo, i am thinking of adding some PHNX to my portfolio...have you come across that company?

FTSE 100 company in the insurance sector. That’s about the extent of my knowledge. Dividend is almost 10% however so you have to decide if this is sustainable. It’s the 3rd highest yield in the FTSE 100. If the dividend gets cut then the share price often falls as investors start to worry.

@@TheCompoundingInvestor Thx! Apparently PHNX has a div cover of 1 and payout ratio of 32%...maybe the cover is a little on the low side...LGEN by contrast has 1.8-1.98

Huge question for any experienced investor, if I buy US stocks here in the UK and for example if pay 600 for tesla and sell for 700 would the US take a withholding tax?
@TheCompoundingInvestor

As far as I know, US withholding tax only applies to dividends.

@TheCompoundingInvestor thankyou, so I want to invest in coca cola more for growth than anything and the dividends who just be a plus. I was reading they do tax dividends but was unsure on capital gain
