How to Make £1000 Per Month Dividend Income With Shares

This is my journey from zero to £1000 dividend income per month through investing almost exclusively in UK large cap companies.
I explain why and how I started generating a sustainable passive income stream and what I learned along the way.
When I started investing in the stock market I did not appreciate the power of compounding dividends over time and what could be achieved. I was more interested in the share price but as this video will show, may though processes and investing strategy soon changed.
With dividend investing you are really in it for the long term and developed a simple way to celebrate reaching certain milestones. This helped me become motivated and wanting to achieve the next target as soon as possible.
By drip-feeding regular amounts into quality companies over time, your wealth will start to snowball and feed itself through compounding.
As Einstein is reputed to have said..
Those who understand compound interest will EARN it and those who don't will PAY it, throughout their lives. I hope this video gives you some inspiration and motivation to keep going on your journey, whatever that may be.
Best wishes from the Compounding Investor

I am a new sub to your channel and I find your story very compelling, I started my own journey in 27th December 2021, by 18th Jan 22 I earned 8p from a £4.99 share of AT&T. I just started investing last month. I have about £2500 in there split across 3 companies so far. Waiting for my first dividend which I expect end of this month and will look to build from this. I am looking to buy when I have at least £500 to invest because of the trading fees attached which can get expensive and wipe out some of the income... I think £500 is about the right level to balance out future income versus costs.

Well done first of all, on the achievement and making it into an entertaining video. When I started in 2009 my platform did not allow me to buy overseas individual shares and I had not even heard of an ETF back then so I grew accustomed to buying individual UK stocks. Congratulations on your epic achievement. You have done well, i don't know your age but in another 6 years it will be your China dividend wedding anniversary marking 20 years.I hate to think about what your dividend reinvested will amount to then. To put this into some type of perspective as I don't know if you realise what you have achieved the New Uk full state pension 21/22 is £9339.20 a year which would require 35 years of full N.I contributions. If you decided to buy a retirement annuity you would need a pension pot of £250,000 which would give you £1051 a month £12610.44 per year ( rate from the internet) but of course if you died the the annuity dies. Whilst as long as you live when needed you can draw an income, tax free from your isa. Advice give up the happy meals i think you can afford a couple of bottles of Aldi champagne at each landmark, plus a happy meal if addicted.

Some great analysis there Michael and very interesting reading. Thanks. I’ll continue to follow the Buffett approach and see what happens. I only think about the next £100 a month target. Whenever a dividend is paid I fire up the spreadsheet and find the total dividends over the last 12 months of that date and then I divide by 12 to find the average monthly dividends. It’s really motivating watching that figure go up. Reaching the first £100 was tough but it gets progressively easier as time goes by. Still we never know what’s around the corner. In the 1970s the FTSE fell 70%. Best of luck Michael and thanks again for visiting the channel 👍🏼

Nice video. Do you keep your investments in a tax free wrapper? Just wondering how you avoid paying the hefty tax on dividends. The limit of £2000 per year which is ridiculously low and another example of the punative tax regime we face c/w the US

@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
Hello Dianne, Vast majority is inside the ISA and I keep the highest dividend payers inside. The lower ones outside and I make sure the dividends outside are below the £2000 limit currently. With the new tax changes my plan eventually is to only have an S&P500 ETF outside the ISA which pays a very low dividend. I wish I could have everything inside the ISA but there isn’t enough room. I shift across 20k a year from my general investment account to the ISA using something called a Bed and ISA transaction. There seems to be a lot of interest in investing and tax since the budget. Some fairly severe changes coming up which is certainly affecting how I’ll be investing going forward. It’s going to be extremely difficult to keep the dividends below the tax free allowance as they are reducing it to £1000 and then just £500 in the following year after that. However, switching to buying more of the S&P500 ETF with low yield may actually be a good thing giving greater global diversification. All the best with your course and your future videos.

I sold the lot to put a deposit down on my first house and during the financial crash I saw an opportunity to get back in. I soon added National Grid which paid 6% dividends and slowly added more global FTSE 100 companies with economic moats that had good cash flow and were unlikely to go bust. The average yield of the FTSE 100 is currently 3.9% so you would need around 30k in order to receive around £100 in dividends per month. There would hopefully be some capital growth on top of this. Nothing is guaranteed of course and yes your money is at risk. Some would say less risky than leaving it in a bank and having 10% a year eroded from its value by inflation. Everyone’s tolerance to risk is different however and also their time horizons. For me I invest for the long term with money I don’t need for any particular purpose. I only started this dividend portfolio when the mortgage was paid off and I had no debts. I believe that having a long term time horizon e.g. at least 10 years is important when investing in order to cope with the volatility that can happen. At the start of the pandemic my portfolio fell from 230k to 170k in just a few days. You have to ask yourself if you could cope with those kind of situations.

New money going in varies a lot but the total over 168 months was 220k which is about 1.3k a month on average. I did make sure I paid the mortgage off and clear all debts before starting the portfolio in 2009. This meant I could focus on this one thing without money going out to pay back loans. The video below gives further details. If you skip to the last couple of minutes you can see all the figures.. Real shame that you didn't put roughly what your total portfolio was worth at the same time, alongside the dividend stat's. Obviously making tons of cash from dividends is easy if you're throwing hundreds of thousands at the thing but out of the realm of most of us.

Thanks for your comment. I agree that in hindsight that would have been useful. This was one of my first ever videos and I was still learning the ropes so to speak. In all my monthly dividend videos since then I put the totals in the description. You can still get a rough idea of how much the size of the portfolio was in each year by multiplying the monthly amount by 300 so for example £100 a month would be produced from a portfolio size of around 30k. I’ve only ever had a really ordinary in the education sector so I’ve never actually earned a great deal. I only started this portfolio when the mortgage was paid off and I was debt free. Paying the mortgage off first was difficult and I had to make lots of sacrifices. The video below explains my full story.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZOJo7GZu9mrf58.html

To judge how successful u were u need to say how much you were pumping in each year. What was it ?
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor 2 жыл бұрын
Probably not as successful as if I’d simply bought an index tracker to be honest. ETFs were not a mainstream thing when I started and I made plenty of mistakes as I was learning but overall to date I’ve put in 220k into the share account which I started in 2009. Total value currently 345k, so overall a 57% profit if I were to sell everything now.

I will do a future video breaking down the portfolio. Over 90% of it is in FTSE 100 companies. If you see one of my earlier videos on "building a diversified dividend portfolio to beat the market, the bulk of my capital is in those companies"

Thanks for the feedback, my initial plan was to invest 1k a month of new money but it did fluctuate quite a bit and ended up being 1.3k a month on average for the years shown in the video. If you look at my latest 2 dividend unboxing videos I state In the description exactly how much I have invested in each company and I will continue to state this each month. I hope this is helpful and thanks again for watching.
