Dude, I am working on my producing and mixing everyday. There are a lot of ups and downs. Today was a downer day and multiple things went downhill. Nothing too major but a video like this was needed. A video where you give advice, keep it honest and realistic and most importantly - are not selling stuff and courses with each sentence. Looking forward to joining you at level B or B- in the future 🤟🤟🤟

I think it’s also important to note that having an Apple or Spotify playlist shows potential clients that the artists you work with are actively releasing the material you worked on together. It’s like an extra barrier of trust.

Great stuff. I've had quite a few people turn into regular paying clients after a freebie. I approach people I KNOW are working on a lot of songs, and tell them I would love to have something like that in my portfolio. If they like it, great, if not, great! I get some portfolio material either way. I'd say about half the folks use my mix and get the rest of their album done by me.

Thanks for your insight. So find a lot of mixes to do for free, but each should be a better production than you've had before to your portfolio. Taking coffees implies you live in an area where there are alot of music people too

The word that hit me the hardest was "FREE". I am a sucker for helping young, new artists. I used to make it a goal to locate a college student that is excelling in their education, and their music. I would always offer them a few full production songs, all on my dime and dollar. I enjoy giving and helping, but the truth is, no one can make a living by giving away free work all the time. Colt is 100% correct in saying a free client has yet to become a paying client. Some of those new artists have stepped up a few rungs in the music entertainment industry. Those people moved forward with other producers and used me as a rung in the ladder. I volunteered and donated that knowing what to expect though. Never give anything and expect something in return. I am proud of every artist I have worked with that has moved forward with other producers and mix engineers. Short story; free work is resume material, experience, and advertising.

Such a good video! I absolutely can agree that I'm as successful as I am in my SoCal music scene because I've networked by going to local shows to genuinely support those local artists, or I've lent out gear to those who needed it super quick, or even have just hung out and had a sandwich with them. Frequent and genuine in-person meetings are so so so important. I also loved the very beginning of this video talking about doing free/cheap work. Took me back to my first true client (my best friend) who hired me to do his EP which took 8 months to make and I asked for $100 so he paid me that along with a bottle of cologne.

So. If it takes years to go full time to support yourself then in the meantime how do you manage having a day job and still be finding time to do all of this to build things up? Say you have a client who wants a mix done right now and you're at work you gotta say "sorry I'm at work can you wait til I get home?" ? As someone struggling with ADHD it seems almost impossible right now to get the ball rolling on my mixing career. And I know that's on me. But I've gone through that free work stage and I've built up a good portfolio. As well as getting my studio up to an acceptable level. Feeling stuck at this point.

I work out of cramped 10x12 room with my desk, 10ft square vocal booth, half stack mesa 2 gtrs, and a bass, with a roadcase on casters filled with 1 mic pre, a compressor and deesser, along with my speakers. I placed some sitting chairs at the back for comfort for clients..but far from a pro looking studio....at this time, thats all i can afford. that being said my mixes are competitive to whats out there, and my rates are lower than there's//that being said, I did decide to raise my rates today from 40-60 and hr for recording and from 250-400 per song to mix. I have had some clients just offer me 400 when i was at 250 saying, my rate is way too low...so i decided to raise them. I have lost several clients to the fancy studios, which is a drag. I'd like to blame it on my set up here at home for the lack of clientes...but not sure if thats the case. I will take your advice to be more personal with ppl...Thanks

Man, this is great. Always love your insight! 👏 I would love to know your thoughts on working with an artist’s project that you really believe has the potential to do really well upon release, but they don’t promote it nearly enough to really garner an audience or much of a response. It’s always a bummer when both parties put a lot of effort in the recordings, but once it’s released it’s almost dead on arrival due to lack of promo.
@ColtCapperrune

That's always a bummer... Unfortunately it is up to them to promote, and the best you can do is try to advise them on how, and share it everywhere yourself.

Hey man, thanks for the video. Some useful guidance. I would agree about the working for free situation and how those clients will not be paying unless you set the correct expectations. I've worked with people for free and gotten them to pay for sessions once they understand the value they'd be getting. But that being said anyone that is a skilled producer/engineer/musician should NEVER be working for free. This idea of working for free whether it be for songwriting, producing, internships etc. in the music industry needs to be erradicated.
@talenwaver
@talenwaver Жыл бұрын
Getting any opportunities in the industry comes down to connections first and foremost. ex, "Friend A" is a baker fulltime and is semi alright at mixing (a hobby). Their cousin's best friend owns a restaurant. The dishwasher at that restaurant had a great night partying with "Friend A" and introduced them to their friend who happened to be looking for someone to assist them in the studio. Friend A got in the door without even looking and has been mixing fulltime ever since. Other (most common) scenario is being born into it via family. Try and try but mostly hope you get lucky. :)

First of all i appreciate the honesty and put work into all this which is amazing and you are on the right tracks to success, to be honest i dont have the things you have and i didnt do it like that which could be a reason for me not having a client list etc . But i have listened to your songs and some stuff are amazing but i personally think there is some problem you could improve uppon and its mixing and mastering .... i dont know where and how and what happends but its lacking low end for some reason and some mixes seem narrow, some not as open enough depending on song...Dont know if thats done by streaming processing or originaly, soo if you want to improve uppon that i am willing to give some consultations and help you open your way to A class possibly. Im open to get in contact if you wish to do so, keep up the good work :)

Hey Colt, great vid with some super interesting info! Are you able to expand on your reasoning as to why you don't believe that you can turn a freebie single into a paying client down the road? Personally I've had decent success with turning free work into paid work with the same clients - it may have been luck or chance or something but from my experience it seems totally possible. Not trying to dunk on you or your vid just very curious as I enjoy your content as you've good some super good info. Thanks

Very good points. I’m building my first pro home studio, and I’m investing time and money on how it looks (and it takes a lot of effort), I think it’s so important too. I know a lot of mould smelly old ugly studios with no cable management, old rusty colors, zero light placement, and I hear them complaining about not getting clients… really? 😅
@joshjoyce7537

interesting! Good stuff. I particularly found the part about trying to level up fron D, to C, to B clients fascinating as I myself have been a full time studio owner for 7 years now (the last 4 years were really when I started making "full time" type money to be able to provide for a family, before that I was barely getting by.) I find that I stuggle to fully level up from the D/C to the C/B range and recently I would love to make that jump. I know that my work is competetive and really good as I have spent that last 9 years soaking up as much knowledge as possible and working on hundreds of songs every year, the issue is, the market in my area is FLOODED with what you would consider "D level" clients. About half of the new clients that I work with in a year are coming to me as their first ever recording experience and are on extremely tight budgets, and I really cant turn them down because...well....they pay my bills. I have certainly worked with some more prominent local bands and artists that I continue to work with and build with as well, but I really am struggling to figure out how to level up. Love your content!
@jacksolleguitar

Man I felt that. It's the same out here in the Czech Republic. Hard to level up with these clients here so I'm getting new ones mostly from around the world then local. But the clients are still on the same level. It's just more of them :)

You really hit in on the nose when you emphasized that free stuff should only be done if it is going take your portfolio up a notch for marketing. I found that when I did stuff for free, or charged less than my worth, the value of my brand went down. I think subconsciously people won't take you seriously if you are cheap, even if you are great at what you do. Perception plays a big role, so you gotta keep peoples perception of you as high as possible. Know your worth and change it unless, like you said, it eill be the best thing you have worked on so far and help you get more clients.

Great video Colt! I wanted to ask you a question about booking clients further into the future?...I'm already doing this full-time but it's still like Good Month X Bad Month kind of thing so when I get busy I just do as much work as I can to get enough till bills are due but then I have no time to work on promotion and networking etc....and when I do book clients for next month usually they don't follow through and then I'm screwed 😬 Maybe it's the level of clients I work with I don't know...any thoughts?

I fell your pain!! what stopped that for me was taking a deposit. I currently take a $500 deposit per song to even get on the calendar for a full production, and payment in full for mixing/mastering to get on the calendar. That pretty much eliminates this issue, as they have to be pretty serious to send over the deposit. Hope that helps!!

@@sonidodemoniacostudios7752 damn ask them if they like it then its at least 100/ per song, they should respect you taking all that time to do great work! all the free work everyone does is killings its own market. see if you can form a movement to end that?
