What would you record with the Soyuz Launcher?

Thank you Warren. I just started building my home studio a couple years ago. I have purchased only gear you approve. Everything works so well and I am so happy with it. You saved me a lot of money by not purchasing things that don't work. Thanks for all you do!

So, I've downloaded the tracks, listened to it with either monitors or headphones, you can notice It adds a subtle warmth to each track and kinda subtly darkens it. As you said it's suble, but makes a quite noticable and pleasant difference at the end. That's a really cool object for sure !

Funny, a few days ago I was seriously thinking about putting an audio transformer between two XLR-connectors in a small metal box. Honestly, no active components, but including a small high pass filter. I'm looking forward to listening to and playing with the multitracks. Thanks!

I got one of these a few weeks ago, pretty amazing little box - been using it on vocals with various dynamics. Going to be using these for a long time

I've used the soyuz on electric guitar (surf vibe) with a ribbon, lead male vocals with a beta 58, and a drum room mic (ribbon). I didn't do any kind of A/B testing, but I've really loved the sound and vibe of the tracks.

It would be interesting if there was a shootout between the soyuz launcher and the cloudlifter CL-1 especially with ribbon mics. Great Video, Warren!

I downloaded the multitrack, listened in my monitors and in a good pair of headphones and here is my veredict: the soyuz launcher makes sounds steadier, specially if you are adding them. The mix sounds more ready, more rounded, fuller, even louder. It's a subtle difference, but it was enough to put a smile in my face.

It seems like a solid in-line preamp; this would be a good choice just for Soyuz's build quality. For coloration, it makes sense if you want to run everything through it, but otherwise I could only see myself using it on sources with high end that needs to be tamed, and possibly going for a hybrid digitally bright/analog subtle filtering experimental production and mix.

Something I've figured out about having one of these units, the Soyuz or the Royer DB-20, SE Dynamite thing, or a Cloudlifter, it can solve an issue with when you want to use a dynamic mic and a condenser mic together on a source into an inexpensive consumer audio interface. Such interfaces usually have phantom power either on or off for all the inputs. The booster requires phantom power to run but doesn't pass it through and so it is for dynamic and ribbon(passive) mics. So, you turn on phantom power, one input runs your condenser mic and the other your booster box with your dynamic mic. This also may be of benefit by bringing the dynamic's level up to the condenser mics level. (This isn't an issue on higher end interfaces with phantom power on sets or individual inputs of course.)

I actually like the subtlety that it adds. It rounds out the transients in a good way. I could see a use for it and it seems a better investment than a plugin as it almost costs the same but does it bit more.

These things always get written up like magic sauce, but it just sounds like light compression - glues things together slightly, warmer low end. Very, very subtle though

Yeah! Definitley subtle, but I can her it, thinking if you did a full track with every instrument through it, esepcially on kit, you'd hear a wonderful lift for sure! Great little device!

There's a very subtle reduction in the attack of the notes with the Launcher. Almost like a compressor without the squeeze. Warren, is this the same kind of impact a 1073 style preamp has on the signal as well? It seems like the transformer introduced to the audio would function similarly.

I don't have the best ears. The difference was very subtle to me. I actually didn't notice when it switched from with the Soyuz to without. When you brought the Soyuz back in though I did notice a bit fuller attack but very minimal.

How about clipping through it? The main reason I use my analog gear is to clip as the analog in/out has a 18db headroom as the sound source is increased into the headroom the more that analog effect kicks in. If I run all my tracks through the analog and back in to the DAW at 0 which is -18db in the digital realm there is next to no difference added, so to have a more obvious colour/saturation/silk/sheen/thickening. There has got to be a sweet spot (point of difference) for the SL Whats your thoughts Warren?

So very very subtle...... the most obvious difference to me(still subtle) was on acoustic. Without it there was a tiny bit more top end sparkle. Really is about accumulative effect. It does make a slight difference. For me personally, I wouldn't spend the $200 on that. Good solid product, but for that money I'd buy another Fathead Ribbon, or a good 2ch interface. Just my 2cents

"yeah, I said it", I think this little box sounds great, I'd love to be able to buy an 8 channel version. I'll get one for sure in the future, I own a Zulu passive analog tape simulator, it's a stereo version, I use while tracking and then again when mixing, these kinds of boxes add something special for sure.

It's great! It sounds more like a vinyl! It gives more dynamic and more clear sound. Just listen to the snare drum or the acoustic guitar in mix.

thank you, warren. subtle, indeed. probably useful on a case by case basis, depending upon the subjective goals for the mix. could definitely be an upgrade to prosumer level interfaces. as always, the effectiveness of any tool lies in the hands (and ears) of the craftsman (or craftswoman). cheers!

One caveat: I really like the Launcher. It's a solid product but be careful to listen to your source and whether it may be better served cleaner. If it works better with color then cool but just don't use it to use it, ya' know? Also, it doesn't need to be hit very hard before you can get transformer "ring". It ruined a vocal take once, which was fine, on a session I did and we had to switch it out. Just FYI- As always, use your ears.

Just downloaded the files, thanks for these! The volume is not perfectly matched on every track (that is why you probably got a big difference when summing the mix). If you match the volumes the difference pretty much goes away and actually what is happening is that there is MORE noise in the Soyuz tracks (listen to the tails at the end when volume matched). So the added noise can sometimes give a perception of "analog" or "sheen" (I often add noise to recordings or VSTi for added realism). I wouldn't recommend this since it even adds noise compared to preamps only. Thanks again for the test!

Even with everything playing I can ONLY hear very subtle changes on my studiomonitors and headphones. I can't hear it on individual tracks blind. So to me this product has a bit misleading marketing, but I'm glad you've tested it thoroughly.

Best way to really see the difference is to level the tracks and guitar alone. and having the Mix with the guitar track levels the same in the Mix itself. The best professional kick butt part, it is the NULL part . Here we can hear the frequencies in which the differences lie....but it does not seem that would make that much of a difference in the mix......any audio work done on the tracks for the guitar w/Soyus? or just a Mix side effect plus being louder? Overall awesome and gave thumbs up!!! 👍

I stopped around 9:30 during the acoustics to write this.....I THOUGHT I heard something in the lower mid / mid-range happening with the Launcher, but I am sure now that I heard it in solo.....it is adding "weight" to the tracks, BUT it sounds like it is building up when all the tracks are played....OK, off to watch some more of the vid...

It seems like it makes a slight difference in transients. Notice in the attempt to null it out, it DID null out more and more into the sustains of the notes, and the pick attack of the acoustic sounded almost like you had an expander on it when it was as nulles as you could get it.

Looks like a cool variation to the Cloud-Lifters or FetHeads that could lend itself nicely to many mics/instruments i'm sure, or heck, even various interface preamps on the way in. As you said, it's a subtle change, but it looks like it adds ups to a pleasant overall thickness, and mellower top... which couId be a compliment to a variety of genres, or I could totally see it's color being brought out even more with strategic EQ/Compressors/Exciters/etc. I bet it would be neat on a vocals. Especially if it's a full Vox array with a multi-tracked Vox + BG Vox, & Harmony support tracks. Really nice little piece of kit! Also let me give you props, that was a Rad little on the spot improv track there sir! I was digging the vibe. I tend to really like Electric Guitar arrangements with an Acoustic Guitar rhythm support part giving it that sorta supportive "bite" & timbre/articulation range. Just out of curiosity, how does this color the signal compared to the Cloud-Lifters w/ the Variable Impedance? I've never tried Vari-Z Cld-Lfters, but I figure you possibly have, so I figure it's worth an ask. Anyway, Great Video! Appreciate the demonstration!

Please Warren - I want this XD. .. have to buy a second one anyways. Totally awesome. I feel/hear the oomph/weight/saturation absolutely. On my iPhone. That’s what matters to me x) . Also, just like analog, it's subtle. But, if all the tracks are analog, it builds up( harmonic distortion) . Thus, you get a collective sound.

Would love to use these on vocals as well as guitars! Sometimes all I have to record with is a solid state amp but I feel you could get some really cool tones running the mic through this!

Amazing how Warren can play guitars right and left-handed :-) I like inline preamps as they make my cheap (but good) ribbon mics usable for vocals and acoustic guitar as my old Slam just doesn't have enough gain, although I think most of them aim to be as transparent as possible. I think the Launcher is great if you're recording directly into your interface instead of going through a vintage-style preamp. Otherwise, something like the Cloud Lifter or Dynamite might be preferable. I hope everyone knows that you can't use it on any mic that requires phantom power.

Thanks for the video Warren, I've been wondering about this device! I'd be curious to hear a mix using the Launcher even though that would not be a perfect representation of its sound - I agree that the glue effect has some nice qualities, but to my ears that 'glueing' is also removing pleasant dynamics and 'air' frequencies. Perhaps mixing different pre's in parallel would solve my qualms, but hearing a finished mix that was recorded through two parallel pre-amps like this would be intriguing to me at least. I was looking at a BAE device ..similar thing ..i think it was a decent transformer i do believe...i thought it would be nice to liven up the digital signal a bit. I'd need 2 ...they're a couple of hundred quid each.

It's a subtle but nice difference. I use a cloudlifter CL1 with my sm7, it would be nice to compare both. If you don't have a high gain clean pre you need one of these boosters with the sm7 or with passive ribbons.

Yes. I can hear the difference. The Soyuz gave a bigger sound , a little wider, bottom end heavier.

So wait at I understanding that you run phantom power into that box and you have dynamic mics plugged into that? I always thought phantom power hurt dynamic mics and ribbon mics?

Warren, did you notice if there was any latency with the launcher versus the straight recorded tracks? If so, how much? And wouldn’t that screw you up if you were overdubbing some tracks using the launcher, and some tracks without using the launcher?

Try it with your tube mics...it removes the excessive high end and adds a nice weight

Hey Warren. By using a Y cables aren't you loading the mic with half or twice the load?

Sure the results are subtle but it’s those subtle differences that take a mix something great, that give a mix that undefinable quality that makes your hairs stand on end. 🎛🎤

I assume that it was a nice try to do "a promo" for Soyuz Launcher but the Audient nails this demo! :) Maybe paired with some poor sounding interface like UX2 or sth would be more convincing :) It was a nice try, this little box is probably worth of buy, but certainly not for someone who has ID44 :)

How can you NOT hear the difference? Maybe as a mixing engineer i just learned to notice small things but seriously- if you guys are not hearing the weight this thing is adding - change what you’re using to listen to it or train your ears

Wow, when this first went up I couldn't really hear a difference using headphones but now listening today on iLoud monitors I clearly hear it in the full mix. It definitely sounds warmer, and adds a bit more depth and slightly widens the stereo width. Without it, sounds more sterile/cold, stereo width closes in a tiny bit, a bit more 2D. The full mix almost sounds like it has too much warmth so I could see it being overdone if you put it on everything or depending on the genre. But then again like you said, it's not mixed so maybe if it was fully mixed that would be different. just my .02

Am I mistaken or was last playback pass it was on Bypass. Maybe it wasn't needed because it was recorded with it, if so having the plugin up there with it in bypass was misleading.

Too subtle for me. I use Fetheds to boost mics with not enough gain...and colouration can come from my outboard pres and then if needed/wanted later with any of the plugins ITB.
