This film has never received enough credit for how clever it is. The switch from action movie to horror slasher movie is brilliant. It overplayed the macho muscle-bound men part deliberately so it's more effective when they get wiped out so easily. Still the best Predator design in any of the movies.

Agree. It’s the one 80s action flick where Schwarzeneggar does get his butt kicked around. Alan Silvestri’s score was equally impressive and his first true action film.

I’m a year late, but I just rewatched both Predator and Prey and have to say YEAH!!! Predator is an INCREDIBLY well done film. The cheesy action scenes and bad special effects for majority of the film almost bait the viewer into a false sense of security! And then BAM! The Yautja begins using advanced tools to heal itself and, without fail, I am always hooked. The way the special effects team put their blood, sweat and tears into that damn costume is not only visible, but thematically gorgeous. I just love this movie. It’s one of my favourite films of all time with Alien hitting my number 2 spot and Predator at number 3! Nothing gets better than these series, I fear

While I agree with you, what also makes this the best movie in the series (and superior to the equally brilliant ,"Prey") is the fact that, despite the hypermasculine element, the characters were all embued with humanity.Whether you liked them or not everyone had their own individual personality;even Hawkins and Dillon. By comparison in "Prey" the only characters the are developed are Naru and her brother. All the rest of the Comanche men are depicted as 2-dimemsional misogynists.

Mac chasing the Predator up the hill ranting 'gonna have me some fun' over and over is actually his buddy's favorite rock 'n roll song lyrics played on the chopper at the beginning of this movie. The Predator suit, like nothing we’d seen before back in ‘87, except maybe the Alien Xenomorph from Alien and Aliens. The originality. And it aged pretty well, doesn’t look as dated as other movies from the late 80’s. Culturally Iconic movie.

I actually think that they Oredator suit from 87 holds up better than the xenomorph from the Alien movies. They wet clammy skin, facial expressions, and mandible animatronics are sublime. Plus Kevin Peter Hall actually had the height and sheer body mass to make the Predator look absolutely huge compared to humans.

Yeah I get it if people are impressed by the cgi today and how clean impeccable they look but to me it isn't more convincing than a well masked suit. The only thing you can't do is have the actor engage in long flashy fist fights but I can't imagine that in Predator and we also see too much of it today therefore I wasn't touched by the action in Prey

Predator is just a flawless film, imo. This wasn't even on my radar as one of Schwarzenegger's top films back in the day and it took me years and re-watches to see how immaculately crafted and brilliant of a film it is. What separates this movie from other 80s action movies is the clever blending and bending of multiple genres: action, sci-fi and horror. You said it, there's a lot of horror moments in this movie and it actually feels more like a horror film than anything to me. In terms of the acting, this is legit might be Arnie's best performance, probably a tie with The Terminator. This movie maximizes the importance of it's main ensemble to the point that they all have their moments and leave impressions. In my opinion, Prey is not nearly as good of a film as Predator, but glad you saw the excellence of Predator.

"You're hit, man. You're bleedin'." "I ain't got time to bleed." "Oh... okay." Fun Fact: Jesse Ventura was delighted to find out from the wardrobe department that his arms were one inch bigger than Arnold Schwarzenegger's. He suggested to Schwarzenegger that they measure arms, with the winner getting a bottle of champagne. Ventura lost, because Schwarzenegger had told the wardrobe department to tell Ventura that his arms were bigger. You're going to have to get up much earlier in the day to get one over a professional practical joker. Don't Drink It Fact: The Predator's blood - a goopy substance with the color of Mountain Dew - was made on-set using a mixture of the liquid from inside glow sticks and KY Jelly. Practical Effect Fact: The invisibility cloaking effect was achieved with a bright red suit (because it was the farthest opposite of the green of the jungle and the blue of the sky) the size of the Predator. The red was removed with chroma key techniques, leaving an empty area. The take was then repeated without the actors using a 30% wider lens on the camera. When the two takes were combined optically, the jungle from the second take filled in the empty area. Because the second take was filmed with a wider lens, a vague outline of the alien could be seen with the background scenery bending around its shape.

Jesse Ventura should've known. Arnold was famous for getting in his opponents' heads in bodybuilding competitions. One of the best instances was when he convinced another contestant that the popular thing in America was to pose and then yell as loudly as you could to emphasize your strength. He did so, and everyone looked at him like he was an alien. 🤣

A couple more notes about the predator in this one compared to prey. You can tell right off the bat he's far more experienced as a hunter. He's more patient and methodical. Even though he has access to better tech, like his mask, he doesn't rely on it. He only went in with his wrist claw and shoulder mounted plasma cannon (no more projectiles). In his target selection he only goes for the best, there was a whole camp of guerilla soldiers he could have went for but waited until Arnold's special forces team took them out. Then went after them one by one, instead of getting into a big brawl with all of them at once.

One of the things i dont like about Prey was in the end, when she defeated the Predator, she gave out her war cry but looked emotionless even when returning to her village. she didn't seem to mourn her fellow warriors or her brother who just died. Schwarzenegger and Glover had that PTSD beat down look afterwards. like they been through it. But it was a good movie, i ranked it #3 on my list after Predator 1 and 2.

Arnold reprises his role as Dutch in Predator: Hunting Grounds video game from 2020. He didn’t want to do the sequels because he felt the scripts weren’t up to his standards. For the most part he was right, but I would have loved to have seen him in the sequels just because it’s Arnold. Predator 2 is DEFINITELY worth a watch, though the vibe is completely different from the first, or any other sequel for that matter. But if you want to see a Predator film directed with a Richard Donner/Paul Verhoeven vibe, then hop on to it! Far less pussy jokes though.

The first of the team to die 'Hawkins' (comics and bad jokes) was played by Shane Black who would later gain high praise for writing pithy buddy cop scripts with the likes of 'Lethal Weapon' and 'The Last Boy Scout' etc. He also turned to directing and even made a Predator movie of his own 'The Predator' (one to avoid as you've heard), but others like 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' and 'The Nice Guys' (both written by him too) are utterly brilliant.

The only reason why prey spoils it is that it takes away from the mystery. The original Predator was just a terrifying anomaly in the jungle, and the closest anyone got to knowing more was Dutch saying: "What the hell are you." Now that is a monster. When younger ppl judge visual.aesthetics, I realize they judge only the cgi scenes, not the entire setup. For instance, I'd rate this higher than any Spiderman or Xmen movie, notwithstanding the elaborate accomplisments of those films. But EVERYTHING in Predator is believable. Every explosion. Every view and movement of the monster. The guns and pyro. All top tier. Top, top, tier. There are 2 shots with the laser that look bad, but the rest look better than movies even today. The camo is one of the best effects in all of cinema, as well as the Predator's suit and face.

The only movie I know where almost every line of dialog can be quoted out of context and lose nothing. I often compare this movie to Jaws, because you almost never see the monster while it slowly picks off victims one by one, then the entire third act is a big showdown between the hero and the monster. It's a great formula, but it probably wouldn't work for most movies. Like with all your horror movie tattoos, by only tattoo is a predator. I chose it carefully, because I knew it would be timeless. Stan Winston effects never get old! There is some test footage of the original design though, when it was Jean-Claude Van Damme in a lizard suit. That was not a good look. Luckily they changed to this before it was too late.

I ran across some predator lore that said Billy was part of the same tribe as Naru from "Prey" and he grew up with the stories of the predator and the kill Naru made. Thats why Billy seemed to be more aware of the Predators presence. Dont know if it was canon or not but a cool link in the films.

Predator 2 has the gun easter egg, an AvP easter egg, and better explains why there were more ships at the end of Prey. they were there to retrieve Feral's body. Also, the yautja in this movie is a much more experienced hunter than the one in Prey was. you can tell by how alert he is, and his much more defined code of honor. You asked "what just happened?" he saw that arnold was unarmed so he disarmed himself and took off his armor to make it a "fair fight" since that is what their honor code dictates. You see more of it in Predator 2 when the Yautja allows a woman to live because she is pregnant and again in AvP when Mr. Waylan attacks and the predator sees that he has lung cancer so doesn't kill him until Waylan uses a flamethrower on him and thus "shows sport". THe Yautja have a very robust history and an honor code concerning hunts and proper game that dictates their lives. IF they break it they are ostricized from their own clans and aren't allowed to mate. It's all fantastic culture to learns and know. Not to mention the fact that he had a shoulder mounted plasma cannon vs the laser guided darts. Yautja hunters have to earn their plasma cannons.

This is such a good explanation of the Predator movies. It also leans into something I've always liked in Prey, and that's the fact that we see "the Predator" does the more cowardly thing and runs away (Temporarily) when Taabe clearly has the upper hand.

originally Jean Claude Van Damme was in the predator suit but got fired after continually getting dehydrated from it being so hot and having no air in the suit plus pissing off the producer

Yes. You should have watched Predator first. It's not about the references. It's the slow build up toward the Predator in the first movie. But since you saw a more modern movie with the modern effects & quicker pacing movies have today, you're not going to appreciate the slow pacing in this movie. The big reveal in the end will mean nothing to you cuz you already know what the Predator looks like. The learning about the Predator throughout the film along side with the elite soldiers for the first time won't be a thing for you. So, yeah. First time viewers should ALWAYS start with the original film. It's like introducing someone to Star Wars. I won't start out with episode 1 the Phantom Menace. I'll start with the original classic Star Wars episode IV as God intended it. Lol. Same goes for Predator. -OG

What people forget about Arnold's 80's movies is that they were all pretty low budget, $15Mil and most of the time a lot lower. It wasn't until 1990 and 'Total Recall' that they started to have serious budgets, Recall was $65Million. Consider 'Terminator' in 1984 was budgeted at $6.5 Million and T2 in 1991 was over $100Million His 80's movies never did big numbers at the box office until 'Twins' but they boomed due to the video rental industry and heavily censored versions they would show on TV

This movie started out like your typical action genre 80s war movie with Arnold wrecking the bad guys with his one liners. The second half changed venue and became a gore & horror monster film. A creative and very unique film, in my opinion. -OG

I watch Prey first. It was pretty good. Yes it had a little disney to it. I actually wanted the girl to be more bad ass. They built her up then pulled her back. The biggest help against Pedator both time was him/she :D toying with his prey too much.

Part of the appeal of “Predator” was that we didn’t know what it was or what the alien could do. Part of the appeal of “Prey” was that we knew what the alien could do and wondered how the characters would fare; how they would figure out how they could survive. Do people open a book to the middle, read to the end, and then start at the beginning? ‘Cause I honestly - no shade - don’t see how watching a sequel before the original is much different.

Having seen Terminator and T2, is there any chance you would encourage or even ‘let’ someone watch the sequel first? Having seen both, is it difficult at all to recognize how inferior an experience it would be to watch them in reverse order? And, of course, I’m making a big deal about something not that serious; but, we watch reactions because we are entertained by seeing people experiencing the joy/terror/thrill of something we like. We want you to like the shows and movies. We want to vicariously revisit our first watches of these movies through you. That’s why something like watching a sequel first is frustrating. This isn’t a criticism. It’s your channel and your lives. I’m simply making an argument that I’m hoping you’ll consider.
