I think it's important to know more about why vans cost what they do. Understanding the market is very important and this hopefully will help you make a good decision on what you need for your van build.

Thanks for continuing to educate us Jarrod! For Dave and Matt, they actually get their vans direct from RAM and sell them as new vehicles like a dealer, that's how they can do financing. LV = Lifestyle Vehicle and LV3 is the 136, LV5 is the 159, and LV7 is the 159 extended. They state their goal is to make vanlife accessible to as many people as possible, so yeah, they probably operate on the absolute thinnest of margins. They don't technically offer custom work, but they're more than happy to consult with prospective buyers to discuss what they might be willing to create or alter to meet their needs.

I know the prices can go up easily, I built mine completely with mainly Renogy, battleborn, Wabasto(yep installed myself also), walnut butcher block counter tips, custom cabinets, isotherm refrigerator, full kitchen. Sink, all electric cooking(induction), small air compressor, 3000 watt inverter, 40 am dc to dc charger, swivel seats, custom raised fixed bed. My cost savings is 6 gallon water storage and gray water( on purpose though), full tongue and groove ceiling, 2 side windows, full 3m insulation, and I disagree about the wabasto style heaters not keeping it warm, I’ve stayed in Colorado and Idaho this past winter, no cold nights. I’ve got a total including the 2021 Ram ProMaster, for around 90k. I’ve had been in it for over a year, ZERO issues. But honestly if you added my labor costs(6 months working 2-3 days a week while working full time) it’s easily over 100k, his numbers are solid.

Thank you Jarrod for saying 37k miles is like brand new. Lily has just under 36k, spread over 38 states since Oct. 2020 and lately ive been feeling she's "middle-aged". Lily, a pro build, has a Rixen System, Cruise N Comfort AC, 360⁰ 8 channel MDVR security system, indoor & outdoor shower, all Victron electronics including a 3000 watt inverter charger, 380 watts solar and, 4 100 amp Battle Born batteries. I tell you this because I just paid $5,500 to double the size of the battery bank. Why? Because the AC needs more capacity and as a higher end build, she demanded more capacity. The marine industry uses yellow wire for low volt 12v grounds. This is because the usual AC high voltage wiring uses black for hot. People have been injured and killed because they cut into a black AC wire, thinking it was only 12 volts. So, red and yellow means a pro did the DC.

Great breakdown. Looking at some of the comments, yes you can find lower priced van builds that are used. These are not those. Thinking this would make a great biweekly or monthly series 🤔 👍 Happy new year and big props on being able to take the time to make this while advancing so fast on your tiny home build.💪 The last one for 180k was my favorite but still feel it was a bit pricey but that is only in my mind. The cold or sterilized look of the 280k reminds me of what one might expect to see in the parking lot of a ski lodge. Used more for show / impress the "snow bunnies" great build but came across for a certain demographic. The 320k was extremely nice. Above the level of a Coachman Class B touring mass produced, but more adventurous. It came across luxurious but still very capable. I wonder what the hourly labor rates between all the examples were. Would a carpenter skilled primary on a c&c machine command a rate equal to, higher or lower than a skilled carpenter and wood cabinet builder? Again very much enjoyed the video and the breakdown.

Those are some amazing "vans". I put vans in quotation marks because the term vanlife (referencing the roots of the term) is IMO barely applicable here. All of these build are more like luxury RVs. That leads me into a question. I followed the channel on and off for some time and it has clearly moved towards high end builds. I kind of miss the core of what the vanlife hashtag/term used to mean. Hitting the road on a budget or lower cost. These builds are nothig a regular person really can afford. I get it, it's more money in covering this topic. Why is there nothing (or just very little) about stuff 'normal' people can afford? I guess it's a dead-end on youtube.

@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci Жыл бұрын
This is obviously the higher end of vanlife. But it's nice to see how and why so that's why I made the video. Why more expensive than RV's? That's because RV's build cheap and have more of an assembly line when building. Vans done by high end builders are more custom. Most offer "A, B, C, D" floor plans but there's custom parts to every client build. The high end builders only do 20-30 van builds per year and it's not because they aren't working fast, but because it will take 3 months to build a van with a 2-4 people working on it daily.
@iamkmann
@iamkmann Жыл бұрын
@@JarrodTocci Thanks for this video Jarrod! My comment regarding campervans vs RVs is that you don't get what you pay for, for either. With that said, if you pay $180k for a high end Sprinter vs paying $120k for 27' Airstream, which one do you think will still be on the road in 20 or 30 years? In 20 years, your $180k investment will be gone because most likely, that van will have been run through its lifespan. On the other hand, that Airstream will still be camp ready as long as the owners have taken relatively good care of it. Full disclosure, I've come dangerously close to pulling the trigger on a van but I just can't justify paying that much for a vehicle that will most likely be dead in 20 - 30 years. I'm curious what your thoughts are on this.

@@iamkmann Why would the Airstream outlast the Sprinter? What if the owner of the Sprinter takes just as good care of it as the owner of the Airstream; wouldn't both vehicles be worth something in 20 years? Very curious, just asking. I ask a lot of questions before investing.

I haven’t but I know someone else that has talked to me about doing one. I’d LOVE to see one and tour it because that style is so cool. My tiny home build I’m doing now will have industrial vibes, so going towards steam punk but not all the way lol

Cruise an comfort is the best, why? What is it’s seer energy rating?it costing a lot does not make it better
@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci Жыл бұрын
Going into details like that it’s best to reach out to the company directly or even go to their website. I never said because it costs more makes it better. I will say I’ve used all 3 low voltage a/c units and by personal feel test and watching my energy I can safely say they are the best. I also know the owner and the owners of the other brands. When the owner spends every waking moment on his product then that speaks volumes to me as he cares. I also know the margins and there isn’t much. To sum up, personal test great, and a owner that care more on his customers comfort over paying himself is a win

How little you and anyone that thinks that know. I paid for Van Life Tech, paid for my toilet, paid for electrical parts (expect batteries). I was going to use a standard 120v mini spilt but after talking to many they said I'd be better off using the cruise n comfort. I offered to pay but with everything I do in the industry he offered it to me. I also NEVER shy away from telling people when I get free stuff, unlike MANY others. Lastly why does it matter if I get free product? If you put in the work I did, would you take it? There is NO ONE that would turn down free product. If you think I don't deserve anything free then that's your own opinion and I'm fine with your opinions. But to comment false statements like you're doing now is just wrong. Hopefully you're not too cold in the basement, stay warm.

I simply wanted to know if there is any information on how efficient cruise’s unit is. I called them and they did not know what the seer rating is. Seer rating is like gas mileage on car. The highest seer minisplit is seer 42( carrier). Most rv a/c units have seer around 12. I would not buy a car that’s 12mpg.
@CJ30123
@CJ30123 Жыл бұрын
@@paullehto2294 another example of these "experts" Jarrod loves to shill for. An AC company not knowing how to calculate SEER rating is alarmingly dumb. Its just the max BTU output divided by the energy draw in watts. So their most popular unit is around 15 SEER rating. All of their units look to be between 12-15 SEER.

Hey, Jarrod, I love your vids, but don't $h*t on the promasters! lol I know Mercedes is known for being more costly than Dodge/Ram, but the difference in price is not as extreme as you say. The base price for the most expensive, newest, 2023 sprinter (3500 high roof ext) is just over 55k maybe 57k with a few of the most expensive factory upgrades. The newest promaster (3500 high roof ext) starts at over 50k with NO factory upgrades, and right now, even used 2022 promasters with around 10k miles, nationwide, does not cost less than 54k- 56K
@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci Жыл бұрын
Definitely not poo pooing all over promasters. I love them and it all comes down to the customer and what their wants and needs are. In this video I was only saying the higher end vans are typically built on a sprinter for many reasons. The sprinter you said I don’t think is the most expensive as they do supply and demand at dealerships so the 144 high roof is the most sold. Also depends on state or location. A California sprinter or Seattle one is much more expensive than one in Missouri. That’s just how it goes. Lastly if you’re “building a sprinter online” then I promise that’s not the price, sadly never is. 2wd sprinter is probably 10k more than a promaster, and they hold their value slightly better. All that said I’d totally build on a promaster as they are great too

Your really the best at what you do and your super well informed but get off that cruise n comfort high horse your on. Its not the best and it’s extremely overpriced for the btu output you get. For your tiny home you can use a top of the line Fujitsu for half the price. Even if you get it for free I wouldn’t use it in that application. Talk to an expert in the residential AC business and see if he disagrees with me.
@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I will agree with you on a standard mini split is possibility just as good energy wise. My cruise will pump out 19,000btu only using 19 amps. It’s also custom made and not an ugly unit hanging off my wall. Overpriced? Maybe little higher after factoring in some things you’ll need to do special for a mini split but for the low voltage and custom work I’ll pay it

@@JarrodTocci I can’t argue the voltage issue but it doesn’t come close technology or power wise. I absolutely hate when people say overpriced but it’s actually 3 times the price of a far superior unit. They advertise 11,000 btu on the website so I assume your getting something special. Let’s agree to disagree. I have the utmost respect for your opinions.

In fairness I am getting a more custom unit. He's only done one other type like mine. I'm setting up a flight out to his shop to show more about his units. The problem with that is it's not a "sexy" video therefore it's hard to put all the time and effort into a video that will get 1000 views. I love giving good info but might have to wait until I'm in AZ again

Failed? Up to debate, but just off this comment alone I’m tempted to go back into it just to prove one person wrong. And if you did any sort of research I built my first van in a promaster, plus my third van was a Ford Econoline. Lastly, only because I want to be a dbag right now, it’s not a dodge because technically it’s a Ram Promaster. Ram is now all the trucks and cargo vans and is still “owned” by Dodge, but then again Dodge is owned by Fiat. Thanks for your concerns The Daniel. Next

The title of this video is borderline obsurd. Pretty ridiculous you think that 80k is a "budget" build. Plus you add the ol' "get what you paid for". Like you're cheap / poor otherwise. Darn thing better be bullet proof and top end performance from everything for that much.
@JarrodTocci

The title is “you get what you pay for” I never said budget build anywhere. If you actually watched the video I explain the difference between an $80k van build and $300k van build. If you want to put in hammock or air mattress in a empty van then be my guest. I’m just not going to compare that to another one. Lastly if you watch any of my videos (sounds like you don’t) I did show a bullet proof build and it was over a million. That goes back to YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR 🤦🏻‍♂️

@@CJ30123 And what do you do? Sit behind your computer insulting people on things you don’t know anything about? I’ve been watching Jarrod’s videos for years and I completely disagree. Did you ever consider that whatever this instance is you are talking about he changed his mind or the company or product changed? Is he not allowed to adapt and grow his opinions as these companies do? How many of these companies are just reinventing themselves and putting a new name on the same product they sold until it was deemed not good…. If he never changed his mind that would be more concerning, he calls it is as it is and is in a position to know and talk to people who are experts on batteries. Attacking someone’s position or opinion is one thing but going after people’s character and their friends and insulting them is disgusting. It makes it evident that whatever problem you think you have with him & his channel is 100% YOU.

The only negative thing I said about Lithionics was the price which is funny because you gave me crap about liking 300k van builds. I actually don’t get paid by battery companies. I’m an affiliate for a couple, sure. None of them give me money tho. Lion batteries are still good, ReLion was ok until their new battery came out and are much better. Those two I’m an affiliate for but I don’t think I’ve got a payment from in a while because I actually talk people into what’s right for them. So I’m some cases battleborn is better for some, or Lithionics is the best and guess what they don’t even know me so they don’t pay me at all.
