FINALLY - someone actually showed how to test things instead of just telling us, test this or that. THANK YOU!!! Just found your channel and sub'd. Thanks for not only telling us what to look for but showing us how to do it. Honestly, that's something that is so often missing and people think "Well I don't need to show that because everyone already knows how to do it. No not at all. In fact your fuse checker, while they're installed was something I've never known before! Thanks again!!

A few points - a battery in a good state of charge will show at least 12.5 volts. If it's as low as 12v, it is discharged. When doing a compression test, you should remove the spark plugs from all the other cylinders before kicking/cranking it over. A dirty air cleaner is unlikely to prevent the engine starting, although it would affect performance once you start riding and more airflow is needed. If it was completely blocked it would show up in your compression test, because it would not be able to build pressure.

I’d also say check for intake leaks. Iv heard anything from electrical,timing and carbs being blamed for a simple intake leak. Iv also had bikes never stay running or not start just because of a torn rubber boot hidden by a clamp.

Exactly. If you just changed something on, or worked on your bike, and it won't start... 99% chance it's something you did.

Been watching a few videos on KZfaq to see what's wrong with Yamaha wr450f dirtbike. Turn on with electric starter and no crank at all. Battery less than 6 months old and it's on a battery tender. Auto zone in my area don't do bike batteries.Thinking its starter solenoid so I was thinking of using insulated screwdriver and touching screws on it to see if I get something of a crank. Just afraid of messing up starter or other electrical stuff. Thanks for the video

You can jump those terminals to test it just wear some gloves and use an insulated tool just in case I used to do this on my road star when my solenoid was starting to go

if you do take your battery to get load tested- MAKE SURE it's fully charged. A discharged battery, even if it's new- will FAIL a load test. You can buy a load tester at Harbor Freight for about $20 - $30; well worth the investment. With that said; "my bike won't start" has many definitions. "my bike won't crank" or "my bike cranks but won't start"- crank no start, especially after a winter layoff is FUEL related- assuming you've charged the battery. In that scenario- it's bad gas from not putting the bike away correctly for the winter. Dump the gas, spray in some carb cleaner and add fresh gas. The other points in this vid are dead on. Ride safe everybody

mine has all of them but still no start..i can barly get it started for a moment with spray but when then its very rough, mines fuel injected 1 cyl

Before step one, I highly recommend you throw that harbor freight multi meter in the trash can!!! 😂lol. Im just playing around, i dig the video, your great at speaking in front of a camera and have great delivery!!! I suck at it!!! The second i press record, i stutter stamper ah uhm pause, and screw everything up!!! Lol

Thanks brotha! Trust me there’s plenty of deleted takes behind the scenes. But I write out my whole video concept from start to finish with all my points I want to hit, before I ever press record. It’s easier to do it in one take if you know all the things you plan to talk about 🤘🏼

This video is super helpful dude, one week my bike was starting great. Cold start second kick, warm start everytime, next week, nothing, so I reset the carb, nothing. I did a compression test and the front cylinder is 65 and the back cylinder is just below 120. What could that mean for the front cylinder?

Just want to start by saying good on you for doing a compression check! Nobody…and I mean nobody, wants to listen to that advice and often they wind up chasing non existent carb issues or electrical issues for weeks. Very smart of you to go straight to the source and check that first. As for what it means, it means a top end job. My front cylinder was exactly the same as yours last summer when the bike wouldn’t start. I ended up pulling the cylinders, having a machinist hone them to clean them back up, putting in new rings and gaskets. She’s good as new now. I used cometic’s top end gasket kit and Hastings rings. All in was around $200 for the parts. The labor of removing them and putting them back is very easy to do yourself. But you’ll need a machinist to measure your cylinders and see if you can sneak by with a hone or if they need to be bored out one size. If you do have to bore them out, you will need new pistons that are one size overbore. Not expensive tho.

Electronic load testers don't work. I recently encountered a bike that had been sitting, and wouldn't start. He told me that the battery was good, and showed 12 volts. He had fully charged the battery the day before. He also had a friend test the battery with a "state-of-the-art" electronic load tester, and test Good. Engage the starter, and nothing happens. Not even a clicking sound in the solenoid. Load testing in the field is very simple. - Don't go to a shop that uses an electronic load tester. Voltmeter with the bike not running was 12.8v. Then continue to measure while engaging the starter; the voltage immediately dropped to about 4v then bounced back up to 12.5v when I stopped cranking. He didn't believe me when I told him the battery was bad so we jumpered his bike from a known good battery, and the bike started up right away. He bought a new battery, installed it, and all is happy. A good battery needs to test a minimum of 9.6v while cranking the starter (most will be 10+ volts if good). A bad battery typically drops noticeably below 9.6v as soon as you engage the starter, so it's not a fine line when you cross it.

It’s in there because some people have a bike that starts but doesn’t stay running. If you don’t like that it’s in there, skip ahead. Every other tip doesn’t require it.

Yea I was torn on whether to include that. Some people will watch this video for bikes that are running but poorly, so I left it in but I should have put a disclaimer that’s it’s fine to skip that step

If you can’t get it to run at all it’s fine to skip that step and instead take it to get load tested then proceed with the rest of the testing. Don’t let that one step deter you from all the other tests in the video which can be performed without a running bike 👍🏼

@@starnino1458 for most engines, it would have to be extreme to prevent starting - either so loose the valve doesn't open, or so tight, the valve doesn't close, causing loss of compression. Mostly, it would just cause reduced performance or excess noise.
