That was before before Rings of Power, and Willow hit with a resounding thuds, and Last Airbender got a middling reception, and the Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek shows started getting diminishing returns in viewership. All the streaming networks realized there isn't actually money in streaming so they can't just keep throwing multi-million dollar budgets at random projects. Studios that were ready to make a jump two years ago are more hesitant now. We're also getting successes like One Piece and Sandman and Good Omens, fantasy projects CAN succeed... and Brandon sells too well to not get some sort of adaptation eventually... but his optimism in 2022 was based on a very different market. Rings of Power, and Wheel of Time not setting the world on fire are big oofs that hurt him.

The thing about crowdfunding a film is backers don't get anything tangible for a much longer time than their other campaigns, and it's much easier to fall through on. Their other campaigns have been successful because they're basically just preorders for a product. A film is much different from that. Also, just because they can find the creation of the film doesn't mean they can get good distribution. Working with an actual studio can guarantee them that. And that's what Sanderson wants, is for lots of people to be able to see adaptations so they can be introduced to his stories. If nobody sees it, that goal is lost.

Do you think it will be good? And if it is bad and people don't see it the goal will be lost, again. And honestly I do not believe that HW will do something good enough. It will be risky, there are a lot of things that could go wrong, but this is the wrong mentality to start. I personally believe that it could be done.
