His performance is brilliant!

Steven Seale is mainly a dancer, so I respect him even more for the progresses he made the past years with his voice :) Now he really rocks! And Drew Sarich who plays Judas in this version is so wonderful!

In this brilliant work, don't forget that Jesus is not the main character.

He got the job mainly because he's a good friend of the director and she wanted to give him a chance. The thing is that he was a dancer and decided to try singing. Personally I think he did a good job.

I agree he isn't the best Jesus i've seen, this song especially is hard but I have to say watching the videos of this production I am blown away. I really liked the staging.

The way I see it, he has a nice sound to his voice and I feel like he does a great job. We are all used to the high, belting sound Jesus usually has. I mean, how many people commenting here can sing this well? Honestly.

This is true, and what makes it so interesting I think.

Steven went the pretty route with the song, so it doesn't have the sheer passion in the vocals that some other versions do. But watching his face and movements, he went more for the pleading/confused route than the desperation, which works just as well, it's just different.

@stefansson11 LOL I didn't mean the composer ))))) There is a singer named Sebastian Bach, he played Jesus in JCS and he was really horrible.

He doesn't have a true rock sound, but he has a good voice & I think there's a nice pathos in his performance that you really don't see that often in ANY portrayal of Jesus, not just in this musical. Jesus for some reason always seems to come across as kind of cold & bland (esp. in films) IMO. There's a sweetness to this guy that I like - I think Jesus SHOULD have warmth & kindness emanating from him & his plight in this song should really touch you. So overall I think this guy did a good job.

He didn't have the range that the other Jesus' had, but I really appreciate his acting.

@melizmatea I would agree with you . I am an avid Superstar fan and i really enjoyed his interpretation of the role. I like the softer, sympathetic side to be seen also.

"S" sounds are really easy to slur while singing, especially with a mike. That's a fairly common way to keep the audience from being overwhelmed with hissing.

Feel freeto watch my version if you want to hear the Jesus notes! The orchestration is unusual nice. I have hear quite a few, and this is the only one in months that suprises me. It's really good! Does Laz have it as a kareoke?

thank you for saying that! it seems like you're the only one to think that. everyone i play the song for thinks he's fine. they obviously don't know JCS well enough to know this guy is on the horrible side. for the character at least. he still has a pleasing voice and all.....

I couldn't agree more, niced2005, but let's be honest - not everyone can be Ted Neely. The only one who I put up there with him is Steve Balsamo.

It's hard to find a really good Judas and Jesus in the same production of JC Superstar. This guy is decent, but the Judas is far better in this production.

This is Gethsemane. I think he's a good singer, but if you can't hit that high note, you shouldn't be singing this song. It's Gethsemane, man, the pinnacle of Jesus's character, the apex of the show. Hit the note, man, or move aside so someone else can.

The only problem with this Jesus was that his singing voice wasn’t developed enough. Otherwise he’s one of my favorites. His performance radiates kindness and goodness. He seems like a holy being which I feel a lot of other Jesus’s lack.

I think that in his own way he did fine. I am not super fond of changing notes or changing rhythms. As a stand alone song, he did pretty good. I just would rather someone try to get as close to the way Neeley does it as possible.

I wouldn't say he is bad at all. Most of you have seen the amazing performances of Ted Neely, Steve Balsamo, or Drew Sarich making this look weak and pathetic. But overall, he sounds like a pretty good singer.

I agree...this guy really doesn't do this song any justice at all what so ever. Not to mention...he should stay with the pace of the song better too...

he may not be awful, but for a professional production, i expected a lot more. The rest of the cast put him to shame almost, ive watched a lot of the other videos and the magnitude of this performance is incrdible, but its a shame the leading man wasn't very good. He is belittled by Drew Sarich. He's not 'awful' but singing wise (what matters in this show) I dont think he sounds at all professional.

Interesting arrangement, less interesting Jesus. If you're casting someone in this role, cast them with the high G in mind, rather than making it "Walt Disney's Jesus Christ Superstar".

I'm sorry. It just seems to me that he is whining or something. I couldn't really feel any emotion. Truly a sad performance, seeing as Gethsemane is one of the strongest songs in the whole rock opera...

The lisp makes this song laughable, he's not a very good singer because his pitch wavers, he transitions poorly and he doesn't hit the high note. Not to mention it's an overall bland performance vocally, the tone of the song slowly shifts and he doesn't really add enough to drive it home. Easily one of the worst versions ever.

he's only using his throat, not his diaphragm, so it gets rough and raspy easily. drew sarich's jesus was so much better, although i do like drew better as judas. i hate this jesus, his acting and singing are both truly awful.
