I love how detailed your videos are. Most newbies like me would find the detailed work a bit frustrating at first, but when the end product turns out like yours, it is all justified and sense of accomplishment is awesome. I am currently practising box joints using your teachings from episode 04 and having lots of fun with it. Thanks again.

I still make mistakes Mike - usually when I'm filming, so this was a lucky one!

Excellent video. I don't think I'd seen the technique of using the plane to level the mating board of a dovetail before. I will definitely be using that!

Cheers Hal. The plane wasn't my idea, but it works well.

Cheers Ken. Gives you plenty of time to recover from hand ripping, and get a coffee onboard! I was a little worried at the length of it, but I though cutting stuff out might not be a good idea

Making through dovetails is a great way to learn essential woodworking skills. When you know how to make a symmetrical, tightly fitting dovetail, you have a good skill set for making stuff. Sawing is an often overlooked skill, but there really is a lot to learn and it's one of the most needed skills. You also learn how to fit two pieces together perfectly. Force never helps. There's a saying in Finland, that a metal worker makes it to 1/100th of a millimeter, but a woodworker makes it accurate. There is a truth in that. So, even if you think you don't need dovetails, practise dovetails :-)

That's a good saying! Practice is key, but also determining what is causing mistakes. You can cut 100 dovetails, but if you don't know why there's always a gap at the baseline, there will still be a gap at the baseline when you get to 1000.

That is true. Understanding how a chisel behaves is a key thing.
