What an accomplishment! I bet your Grandma loves that she has all of her clothes in the one closet and can access everything. it's great that you're able to help her with these decisions.

You have really great advice about supporting people and letting them make their own decisions about their belongings. Decluttering gets easier the more you do it

Your two pass method/strategy is GENIUS. I'm going to have to use this with people I help declutter. Go there one day, one pass, let them stew overnight and think about all the items they'd actually prefer to see go, and then go back the next day to hit it again haha. Thank you; this is the first new decluttering tip I've come across in a long time.

You did an amazing job! My mother too had 3 closets of clothes at the end of her life (in spite of me helping her declutter her home once a week for 7 months to move to a retirement home which she didn't like and we moved her back home again!) And then when she died, we had a huge job of going through her stuffed house and having an estate sale! I am a minimalist of 6 years now and still getting rid of more constantly! I did not want to be like my mother!

I think it’s the era. My mom was born in 29 and had two big closets of clothes and accessories.. Everything was in its place and well kept much like Gabbys grandma s. She always dressed to the nines. 🎉🎉🎉it was hard to let go of her stuff at the end. Took about four months and alot went to storage. My daughter is wearing quite a few of the clothes snd has most of the jewelry 😂🎉❤

My son looked over my shoulder to see what I was watching on KZfaq; his remarks were all about the Dale Earnhardt (Senior) throw on the back of the chair outside a closet! He thinks well of you and your family as you show good taste in NASCAR history! Just thought you'd get a kick out of this!

You and your Gramma are a great team! Her closet looks so good! I hope she sells a decent amount at the garage sale. It makes decluttering even better if you end up with a chunk of change at the end!

Great job! I enjoy hearing what you are thinking and how you deal with people who are making decisions about de-cluttering. Very wise and shows experience. So kind of you to help your Grandma- Taking your time and acting as her feet (up and down the stairs and to places of sorting and containers) shows real love to me. Thank you for sharing- you are a treasure.

So incredible! I bet she just loves it. I can't wait to hear her review. Lol I totally need somebody to come and help me and hoping my son and daughter-in-law will go through all of my stuff and reorganize it and get rid of some of it. It's so overneeded

I’m sorry, but I don’t hear any sense of responsibility on your part. Why not make a goal to get rid of just two items every day yourself. Then ask your children to help with organizing or taking the stuff to donate ,etc. Especially if you are at the point in life where you are LESS busy,(maybe retired or kids are all out of the house) then most likely, your son and daughter in law are MORE busy with working, children, etc. I can personally speak from past experience that I was more willing to help my MIL when she did her part.

I've had a transplant and I'm currently about to undergo back surgery on a protruding disc and a torn disc. I'm still mobile. I'm a tough cookie but to lift things and pull them down from high up is dangerous for me now, you'd have to understand the situation. I've gone over and help them to go through everything. It's just what families do. At least that's what my family does to help each other when they're in need. No I'm not retired. I'm still working. Helps to know. I guess the details.

@@lauramitchell6725also Laura, I don't understand the hypocrisy here. Gabby is helping her grandma and she has children there at her house while she's working. I'm not sure what the difference is. It's my son that's going to help me. Is it a gender thing? It's okay for one but not another? Anyways. I don't know why I feel I need to explain myself. I was just taken back by your mean girl critique! I could see if you ask me details but the way you went about it is just plain rude.

Some years ago, I helped my brother and sister in law so they could move. In about a week, we donated 10 big black trash bags of clothes. We emptied 2 linen closets, and shredded two file cabinets full of papers. I loved it. Tina, Al's wife

Hi Gabby! What an excellent job you did! So proud of you! I am 68 and have as many clothes (if not more) than your dear granma. I do have a question. It seems that bringing ALL those clothes out of the closet is ALOT of extra work. Do you feel that it is worth the extra labor? TIA

I can see one downfall, when people buy tee shirts and sweatshirts as souvenirs. You not only end up with a TON, but now they are all sentimental reminders of good times and harder to part with. Also, a stay at home mom can get by with mostly the same basic “uniform”. However, when your job requires true “ dirty work” clothes or an actual uniform, then you also want nice casual clothes, dressier church clothing, etc. (We had friends who went on cruises a lot and they had half a closet full of tuxedos and sparkly cocktail dresses)😵‍💫😬

Sales are my downfall. I can't resist getting a $200 cashmere sweater for $30-$40, or $70 jeans for $10. When I was a kid, my mom never let me wear my nice clothes. I always outgrew them before I ever had them on. It gave me a permanent mental tick that makes me want to hoard high-quality clothing. Then keep everything for 40 years. It adds up.

Re the relationship between your aunt and your Meemaw and how they butt heads, it's not just personalities, it's the fact they're mother and daughter. That's always going to be a more complicated relationship, same as fathers and sons. It's easier when you're a generation removed. I helped my great aunt downsize as far she was ever going to, and my uncle could never get anywhere with her. He'd get mad and leave and liek you said she'd just hold onto the stuff all the harder. It didn't help he had or has a wife who she never liked who has an online business and was always eyeballing her stuff. She wasn't happy when I was made executor of her will but that's another story.
