My thoughts exactly on his character. When he was introduced in the first ep. I didn't even get the slightest hint that he was this revered warrior purely because of how much he seemed to be a terrible/controlling husband & father when he got annoyed that his son was having that moment with his mom when they were eating dinner & laughing together. But I like the fact that we got a glimpse at his skills as a warrior & how he stood his ground at the end.

Could he act any other way? It sucks but in his position he probably couldnt express any vulnerability or true affection. A modern personal example, my highschool bud, came back from the 82 a different person. Razor sharp focus. A dripping deadly power. He willing sacrificed his soul for his people, perhaps unknowingly, sacrifice none the less.

I am Japanese. Let me share a story about Tokugawa Ieyasu, who became the model for Toranaga. Ieyasu had several interesting hobbies that he continued until his death: Swimming in rivers. Raising various birds, including falconry. Manufacturing health supplements using medicinal herbs. In his childhood, Ieyasu, a prince of a small feudal lord's family, lived as a hostage in the powerful daimyo family of Imagawa. In Imagawa's domain, Ieyasu often faced disdainful and discriminatory attitudes from the children of high-ranking Imagawa samurai of the same age, which made him constantly sad. Therefore, Ieyasu became friends with lower-ranking samurai and peasant children who did not discriminate against him. They swam in rivers, caught birds in the forests, and hunted rabbits in the fields together. This was the solace of Ieyasu's heart while living as a hostage. Later, as an adult and as the ruler of the Tokugawa clan, Ieyasu became independent and had to fight against the Imagawa clan. Thinking that his childhood friends and those who had been kind to him would surely be soldiers in the Imagawa army and face him in battle, Ieyasu secretly ordered his retainers to find each of his friends and benevolent individuals and encourage them to surrender before the battle, thus saving their lives. This is a historical episode. I believe this aspect of his character has been incorporated into the drama of Toranaga. 17:03 The scene where they enjoy swimming together goes beyond the relationship of just a vassal to Toranaga, recognizing Blackthorne as a friend whom he can trust from the bottom of his heart."

I think the little battle is meant to be realistic, not a showcase for awesome martial arts. Samurai didn't fight to be showy - the ideal fight was one killing stroke and done. They aren't there to fuck around, they are trying to kill as quickly as possible. Samurai women were often trained in martial arts as well because they are considered the last line of defense for the home and family. They usually wielded a naginata - long spear with a big-ass blade on the end (as we see Mariko use). They aren't fast to swing around but they have reach and weight behind the swings.

I cannot explain the state of joy I felt in the last scene with John and Toranaga swimming. Turanaga`s childlike face learning how to dive was a bit of his secret heart that he tries to hide from his enemies! Also "Hatamoto" as John is now to be called means "bannerman". Japanese women were expected to defend their homes while the men were away, so yes they learned how to fight as well. There have been several women samurai (trained like one) back then!! Remember, if it did not happen on screen, it has not happened at all!

William Adams (the character upon whom John Blackthorn is based), was actually bestowed the title of Hatamoto by Tokogawa Ieyasu (upon whom Toranaga is based), albeit a lot latter in the story than the show depicts. It was a huge honor and explains the shocked faces of Yabushige and Toranaga's son that a foreigner (for the first time ever) would be given that title. Literally, Hatamoto means "Origin of the Flag" or "those that stand under the flag." The small group that stands with the Shogun/King/Warlord (where the standard is planted) and are under his direct command in battle. In Western terms, depending on the era, it would roughly be equivalent to a Saxon King's personal Housecarls and Bannermen or the Knight Companions of Edward III at the Battle of Crecy.
@Rabbithole8
@Rabbithole8 4 ай бұрын
He wasn't the first hatamoto bestowed by Tokogawa Ieyasu. That is ridiculous. Adams was, however, the first hatamoto that did not achieve that honor through prowess on the battlefield. Adams was not an expert in Japanese martial skills nor did he fight under Tokogawa. That's what was unique and also as you stated that the title was given to a foreigner. Since you have not acknowledged that error but edited it out, I'm keeping my objection to your error intact.

Hatamoto was really established in the Sengoku Period of which the series takes place. After Tokogawa Ieyasu established his Shogunate, the title become institutionalized. that is, an official officer rank. Samurai with that rank were not restricted to being personal guards but were officers within the Shogun's army.

The great part is that Mariko's dank glaive skills *are historically accurate*. Women, specifically Samurai Women, were bound not just to manage their households, but to defend them, and would be expected to fight in defense of their lords in a number of circumstances should their estates come under attack. As such they were trained in standoff weapons like spears and glaives. The reason Buntaro is able to bow to Toranaga, and why he raises his sword and yells, is because there is a realistic chance he might commit seppuku. The act of seppuku was a deeply respected personal decision, and so he is given room to choose his death. The reason he charges them is, in part, recognition of them honouring his moment of decision. Hatamoto is a title - it's kind of like making him a knight in his direct service. In Shogun, this makes him one of the most senior retainers under Toranaga. The real world basis for John Blackthorn - William Adams - also was made Hatamoto under Tokugawa, an exceedingly rare honour. Adams, by then rechristened (excuse the pun) Miura Anjin (The pilot of Miura) may have been the only foreign born individual to ever receive the honour. As for Toranaga and Blackthorn - I love their burgeoning bromance. And, especially for Toranaga, I think he sees a kindred spirit in Blackthorn. They share some traits which I think Toranaga values in himself. I also think Blackthorn's bravery in covering for Toranaga is the moment Mariko re-evaluates him. Combined with Blackthorn wanting to rescue Buntaro and rushing to defeat the assassin the night prior both cement a particular bravery that Mariko can respect. He is a survivor, but not a complete bastard. And Mariko can accept that. She understands that. And I think she sees a parallel between Blackthorn and Toranaga too.

A hatamoto was a personal retainer (or an immediate vassal if you will) to Tokugawa Ieyasu (who is the prototype for the character of Yoshi Toranaga) and his successors in the Tokugawa Shogunate. Like in the army, where there is a hierarchy: a platoon commander is subordinated to a company commander, he is subordinated to a battalion commander, he is subordinated to a regimental commander and so on, the same way a petty samurai was subordinated to a more senior samurai, he to a more senior samurai, and so on, all the way up to the daimyo. Depending to his eminence, the daimyo could be likened to a European count, duke or even a sovereign prince. A hatamoto, while there were still hatamotos of greater or lesser prominence, who had larger or smaller fiefdoms, did not belong to this hierarchy, but was in immediate service to the Tokugawa Shogun.

A very nice summary. Thank you very much! I would like to mention one passage that was not mentioned in the summary, which in my opinion illustrates Toranaga's wisdom and foresight: Now in possession of Blackthorne's logbooks, the British navigator would be exposed as a pirate, which would mean his certain death. Toranaga, however, immediately admits that the translation of the records would take a (very) long time. In other words, at least enough time for Toranaga to include Blackthorne in his strategic military services and appoint him as his personal advisor (you have already depicted this scene) - Blackthorne's loyalty and courageous actions take precedence over his deadly status as a pirate.

This is a famous Zen parable about a fictional account of a Zen master asking the three most powerful warlords of the Sengoku or Warring states period (Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu) what they would do if a hototogisu or cuckoo didn't sing. It was a parable which illustrates the character of each of these three different types of leaders. Oda Nobunaga (Ishido) was known for his fierceness and cruelty and thus would answer, "Kill it." Toyotomi Hideyoshi (The Taiko) was the most cunning and would therefore coyly say, "Make it." Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toronaga) was the most diplomatic and patient so he would most likely say, "Wait for it."

Oda is not Ishido. Oda is Goroda. Ishido is Ishida. Actually Mariko's father killed Oda

That's right, Kazunari Ishido is Mitsunari Ishida. He was a vassal of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After Hideyoshi's death, he was in conflict with Ieyasu Tokugawa and clashed in the Battle of Sekigahara, which divided Japan into east and west.

Samurai armor weighed about 65 pounds, so swimming in it was extremely difficult. Not all samurai were trained to do it, and the depth of the water likely made it impossible for Buntaro to follow.

Samurai armor weighed from 5 kg to 25 kg with most on the heavy end at 18 kg: that's about 55 pounds on the heaviest end. It was difficult to swim, not extremely difficult. However, difficult and slow with a bunch of other non-armored samurai swimming after you will not end well. The enemy are not just going to stay on the dock for some reason and not swim after him. The issue was also that fleeing in that manner is not the most seemly thing to do. In other words, grasping at life like that rather than go out in battle is not honorable. Also, he had a chance at escaping through fighting, even though unlikely as well.

I like this show, its not about the fighting, its about the people within the action and their emotional response to the fighting. Anjin San is an honourable person, for the good and bad positions, John is evolving his character well, he cares. I am looking forwards to seeing how he deals with having people want to follow him. Watching Shogun in the 80's i loved that part, their building of relations between Anjin San and his warriors. Love this show.

Buntaro charging off the docks was a strategic move. Yes, the dock was a chokepoint. But, the attackers were Christian samurai. Some could very well have had teppen {matchlock muskets}. Buntaro charging them created more distance between them and his Sama. Thus, reducing the threat if some were armed with firearms and were given time to set up and fire.

Complaints about the combat but it was actually over embellished. If they stuck to period authenticity as they have done for so much of this show then there wouldn't be a spectacle at all for the viewer. It's a balance and not an easy one to pull off.

The scene where Mariko picks up the naginata and kills the soldiers during the ambush, whilst wearing the kimono that restricted her from even being able to walk a couple of scenes before was so cringeworthy. I have no idea how that made it in to what is otherwise an incredible show.

The ruckus John makes for distraction strikes me as improbable. The enemies are clever, watchful, and primed to look for deceit tactics. No chance they would fall for it. Even if it's direct from the source material, they should have sat down and hashed out something better to get them out of the situation.
