Still continuing on with our Mortal Kombat journey, Jaby & Achara decide to react to a more PG-13 MK storyline when the worlds of Mortal Kombat & DC universes collide into one. Batman & Sub-Zero fight each other? How cool is that?!
Other characters we see from the MK universe are Liu Kang, Kitana, Raiden, Scorpion, Shao Kang, Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, Baraka, Sonya Blade, and Jax Briggs.
We are of course happy to see other DC universe characters as well such as The Flash, Green Lantern, Lex Luthor, Catwoman, Joker, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel (Shazam), and Deathstroke.

Just to explain the whole Shazam/Captain Marvel thing. Captain Marvel was made by Fawcett comics in the 40s before later being acquired by DC and he said Shazam to activate his powers. Marvel then made a Captain Marvel of their own later. This caused a legal issue where DC's Captain Marvel books couldnt be titled Captain Marvel so the books were called Shazam until the New 52 reboot where they renamed the character itself Shazam.

Shazam was originally called captain marvel but well marvel wanted the name exclusively for them selves creating multiple captain marvels the two comic book titans played tug of war with the name until DC gave up on the name choosing to call Shazam instead

Well yes actually, Cpt Marvel's name was changed to Shazam due to trademark issues in 1972 when he was reintroduced into comics. 14:22

Fun fact, this game MK vs DCU was the first fighting game with a cinematic story not just in general but set the foundation and paved the way for the NRS games, this was the last MK game under Midway before WB bought the IP.

@@tai0purto Oh I have lol I own them all and have been a big MK and DC fan since the 80s haha 😄. I prefer DC to Marvel and has always been my fav fighter so I loved this crossover. But they took it further with the NRS games MK9-MK11 and thr first 2 Injusyice games. Ed Boon recently said last month that they're not done with Injustice yet so I'm sure we'll get Injustice 3 after MK 1 no doubt.

The rock formation that Raiden led Sub Zero into was The Rock of Eternity, it was in the movies, it's heavily tied to Shazam as it's where his powers came from. It's pretty cool seeing it in since it being in the center of The DC Multiverse, it makes sense that Raiden would gain some knowledge. I think you guys missed it to, the fact Sub Zero mentioned there was a fortress that formed inside Lin Kuei Territory, that being The Fortress of Solitude which fits the ice theming. They did some pretty cool set up by implying that Sub Zero didn't defeat Superman, only stopped him for the time being.

I don't know. It would be cool to see this crossover remade to its full potential. Perhaps, Netherrealm could find a way to crossover MK with Injustice via DLC to test the waters. They put in Raiden in Injustice before as a callback.

With the DC properties having some gore, I hope they do real fatalities. Already got better animations as it is, though there are some characters jumping between them (Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden in the Injustice games; Joker in MK11).

14:27 Yeah, Shazam was called Captain Marvel back in the day. When DC brought the rights to his comics, Marvel created Captain Marvel *The male version* in the comics. They trademark the name Captain Marvel, and DC used the name Shazam from now on. I understand the confusion. However, he wasn't called Shazam in the stories until New 52 Comics when DC rebooted their universe.

Rage is basically plot amour. The game explains it as the unstable energy between realms between the realms shifting between person to person causing them to get angry and lash out at anyone nearby. It makes some people stronger and others weaker so everyone is at an equal footing.

Captain Marvel is Shazam. Basic explanation of what happened. In the original Shazam comics, he was called Captain Marvel, so he was the first to bear that name. However, because of it being early comics, some people thought they might get sued by DC because he was similar to Superman, so they discontinued it. Later, Marvel comics releases Captain Marvel(not Carol Danvers from the movie but the original male Marvel Captain Marvel). Then later DC buys the company that made Shazam Captain Marvel, but Marvel got the rights to the name. So even though Shazam is the true owner of the name Captain Marvel hsi name was changed to Shazam since that's the word he used to transform and is an acronym for the figures from which he gets his powers from.

Mainly because the original Captain Marvel comics were accused of being stealing the idea of Superman so it was discontinued. Then Marvel makes their Captain Marvel and gets the rights since Captain Marvel wasn't using the name anymore until DC bought the company and reintroduced them

I hope you will watch both sides, this is MK side, and then there is the DC side. But you need to remember, this is the first time, they tried this kind of story telling - before MK9, there was MK vs. DC. So first steps to what we have now in MK :)

The Captain Marvel/Shazam situation went like this: - Fawcett Comics made a hero called "Captain Marvel" in the 40's. - Captain Marvel became EXTREMELY popular, and overtook Superman's sales. - DC sued Fawcett, Because "Cap looked and acted like Superman", and entered a long legal battle with them. - The battle went in Fawcett's favor (DC were just real salty), but Fawcett had lost so much money in legal battle, they ceased production. - The rights for Fawcett were in limbo for some time, and the name "Captain Marvel" was now up for grabs - DC ended up buying Fawcett's catalog (even though they put them in that situation in the first place) - They didn't get the name, because a newly rebranded company called Marvel Comics came to the scene in a big way - DC could make Captain Marvel comic all they want, and say his name in a comic, but they don't own the publishing and merchandising name. - Marvel can make as many Captain Marvel comics as they want, as long as theirs a character named that, with their own comic. - DC in 2011 decided to call him "Shazam", since he's most famous for that. - Marvel now has a major success with Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel, so they're never getting that name back. Sorry for the long story, but it's one most interesting stories in all of comic history.

I have a lot more appreciation for this game after all these years. Still not fond of 'heroic brutality' they implemented for the DC characters. Talk about contradictions galore 😅 Edit: Regarding 'Captain Marvel' confusion, that character you're seeing is who we now know and have known for decades as Shazam. Captain Marvel was a DC creation in the 30's and even outsold superman comics at one point in the 40s. Then, the character fell off from popularity. Marvel swooped in during the 50s and began their line of Captain Marvel (pre- Danvers). The whole thing has been a litigation mess. But DC were allowed to use the Captain Marvel moniker in media form but not allowed to advertise it in titles of comics, tv and movies. To do away with the confusion, DC just did away from using the Captain Marvel name and embraced Shazam wholeheartedly during the past decade. MK vs DC is one of the last media forms to call that character by his old name.

When sonya mentions the lightning bolt on captain marvel chest she assumed he was the one lu kang fought. funny thing about that is they both wear a ketchup and mustard suit with a lightning bolt on their chest but difference is captain marvel got some mayonnaise added to it😀😀

The character was originally Captain Marvel, and wasn't originally a DC character, but DC sued Fawcett Comics over him being a ripoff of Superman and the books were dormant long enough for the "Captain Marvel" trademark to be up for grabs and it ended up in Marvel's hands before DC decided to continue Captain Marvel books. Because Marvel now owned the trademark, only they could sell comics with "Captain Marvel" in the title or sell toys, movies etc with that name, so DC decided to title everything centered around the character "S.H.A.Z.A.M" which was just his catchphrase and the name of the wizard that granted Billy his powers. They did try to sneak "The Original Captain Marvel" as a subtitle but it got shut down pretty quick. It wasn't until 2011 that DC decided to actually change the character's name to Shazam as they are always allowed to call the character Captain Marvel within the media they own, just not advertise it, which included this very game's website that labeled him as Shazam. Confusion over the character's name being Shazam is probably a major reason they decided to change it.

It definitely feels like a prototype for the story modes of later games. The concept is fun, but the dialog is just a bit less cheesy than the MK4 endings and the voice acting is very mixed. It's still fun, though.

If you know nothing about deathstroke I'd suggest watching the first 2 seasons of Arrow. The first 4 are really good anyways, but the first 2 are Deathstroke heavy

That is Shazam. He was Captain Marvel up until recently. Didn’t want to confuse with Marvels Captain Marvel so DC just went with Shazam.

Captain Marvel was Shazam's original name and was around before Marvel's Captain Marvel

I hope you start Injustice 1 & 2 Game cutscene after this since the they are same developers. Also this game have those Jiggle physics you were talking about you just need to look carefully it only works in some scenes. Shazam is Captain Marvel. They change it's name to avoid any confusion with Marvel.
