From Zoro's perspective, he was injured and then he wakes up and Nami, the one he's been bonding with most recently, is gone and the weird waiter guy from the restaurant that he's never seen fight has joined so you gotta give him his moment of confusion and irritation, especially when Sanji is acting like he knows Nami more. Also the Mosshead insult is a classic in the anime. Sanji calls Zoro "marimo" which is moss head and it's kind of an iconic insult he uses a lot because they are constantly feuding

Fun fact: In the original material, the villagers were aware of Nami's deal w/Arlong and sacrifice the whole time, but left her in the dark so she could give up on her plan without being burdened by their expectations. And it wasn't losing the $100mil that led to her mental breakdown - she was actually considering to just start over again - but scar guy telling her she has already done too much for them & the villagers marching to Arlong Park knowing that would be their sure death.

In the anime, Nami saw Bellemere (her mommy) suffer from poverty because of raising them and then Nami threw a tantrum saying they were not even a family. Although afterwards, they reconciled, this might still haunt Bellemere that she did not want to refuse to anyone she did not have those two daughters. In the anime, actually, Nami and Nojiko (her sister) were hiding somewhere else Bellemere did not even know they were nearby.

Bit late, but something I would’ve added is when Luffy’s shouting that of course he will, we get a shot of Sanji, Zoro, and Usopp hearing it from afar and they all quietly say “of course he will.” Just a nice and subtle acknowledgment of them knowing Luffy well enough just from their own experiences with him that he will never abandon a friend or someone in need, and to make the scene flow a little better for people who aren’t used to how anime handle things.

Noo... Nami's mother didn't put them in danger...she actually saved them from danger. The anime gave the proper explanation for it. If she had hidden their identify, then when someday they inevitably get discovered by the fishmen, they would have been killed. She knew from her experience as a marine that it's impossible to hide the identify of Nami and Nojiko from these fishmen. So, she made the choice to make the ultimate sacrifice so that at least her children could live on.... the Anime conveyed it so much better! 😇

Arlong already knew/suspected she was hiding something/someone. It would not have helped to lie anyways. This reasoning is also implied in the anime/manga. Lying would not have mattered because Arlong was already suspicious and would probably not believe it. Arlong would have probably killed her, found the kids and killed them too. when she revealed she had kids, she knew she was going to died regardless of whether she lied or told the truth. The kids bursting out was of course unplanned, but it's pretty obvious as a mom she knew she was going to die. There was no way she was getting out of this. Even if Nami hadn't burst out from the hiding spot, their mom was going to give her life anyways. There was no stopping this fate. This is something I feel is missed if you're overanalyzing the action rather than the reasons for why the action was done. The reason is not that she never lies. The real reason was she was already accepting she was going to die. You can tell by the acting the silent resolution. She knows there was no saving herself. But she was going to at least give her life to save her kids.
@JackTFarmer

This is a huge point missed by Jaby, agree. Secondary to Arlong finding out about Nami and Nojiko is Nami's doubt about them being a family. In the manga, it's more obvious that when the mom tells them about her daughters it's because Nami had said they weren't her real family, so when the mom says they're her daughters it's to solidify they are really family. She didn't want to deny Nami was her daughter because it would have told Nami they weren't really family; it would've been a betrayal to nami I said it very clunkily, but hopefully that makes sense.

This is the only thing I really had an issue with in the live action. The full context of this scene was not brought forward from the manga/anime and I don't see the reason why they had to alter this aspect for the tv show . I am ok with the rest of the changes and do prefer some of the changes too. For context on how it should have played out is that the villagers knew of or found out what nami went through for their sake and all decided to march on arlong park knowing they'll most likely die. Nami powerless to stop them breaks down and ask luffy for help. The people of the village is nami's treasure. Luffy giving his strawhat to Nami was an epic gesture saying "here, you look after my treasure and i'll go save yours".

In the anime/manga the fishman racism wasn't really a part of this arc. Later on it becomes a huge part of the series as a whole. Hundreds of chapters later we find out that Arlong has experienced a lot of racism and prejudice, which motivated his actions, but at the time his only real characterization was "we are superior to humans so we should rule over them." It's one of the changes I really like, because it fleshes out his character a lot without actually changing it.

In the original story, it is better shown that it was very important for the mother that she could not allow her daughters to hear her say that she had no doughters. So when asked, she says it because it would hurt them when she says they were not her children. Also, she would have to keep hiding the fact that she had children, which would be near impossible. Also Arlong had a list with all the villagers names on it. So they would be able to tell that it could not be the neighbors children. So instead she essentially bought their lives in exchange for her own. It is true that it is not the smartest decision regardless. However, it is possible to understand the message behind it in the story without it feeling out of place.

Because he obviously won't leave his friend when she needs help. I actually don't know why they changed the things said here, because in the manga I like it a bit more. He agrees there with Nami first saying "You don't know anything" -> "I don't know anything" and last "Didn't I tell you to leave the island?" -> "Yes, you did", but in the middle he keeps silent after Nami tells him "This has nothing to do with you"... because as soon as a friend is involved, it absolutely has evrything to do with him😢 But I take the LA version, good enough.

So Bellemere both in the manga and in this series has pretty decent reason to admit she has daughters. Bellemere used to be a marine and thus knows how pirates who take over countries/towns work. They usually encircle them and prevent run aways, and coco village is encircled by water which fishmen excell in. Bellemere knew her children couldnt escape, and that it was very unlikely she'd be able to hide them. In the new show, Arlong is already thinking shes lying, how long can you hide 2 human being from a captor who thinks you are lying. She wanted to pay for her daughters to guarantee their safety. If Bellemere just pays for herself and later the kids are found, theres no guarantee he wont kill them on the spot. Thats not even mentioning the moral lesson she wants to teach Nami about the love she has for Nami and Nojiko. She wants Nami to truly know that they are indeed real family.

Regarding the Civil War analogy, yes One Piece actually does touch on subjects such as slavery, etc. over the course of the story. The portrayal of Arlong here is accurate and, without saying too much, that whole dynamic will be explored in later seasons.

If i am not wrong remembering, the anime give more time when nami didn't think that she as her mother (in this live action, we see it in a brief moment).. in the anime, they drag this conflict a little bit more.. that's why until the end, she told the truth that she had 2 daughters (because she knew nami can listen this conversation).. she keep putting that emphazise to nami till the end (you may not think I as your mother, but you are my daughter to me)..

The race and slavery stuff are not very obvious in the East Blue saga but because it gets addressed in arcs much much later the show can pull that info - the benifit of adapting a long running series- In the anime you only know that Arlong sees himself above humans but you don’t know why he hates them so much. We actually get to understand Arlong for the first time 300-500 episodes later when fishmen slavery is addressed in different arcs.

33:21 Yup u are right Jaby. In the manga/anime the strawhat crew travel the world while searching for one piece but they seldom find themselves amongst situations like a cruel ruler or pirate (or even the supposedly good World Government ) enslaving the nation/island. So they help the natives to fight against oppression/slavery. This is a recurring theme throughout the anime, the very reason I absolutely love one piece. The anime might look or sound goofy but the world building, concepts of human nature to be free etc is what makes this anime so special and close to my heart.

Bellemere's deal is she values her love for her daughters over all else. She doesn't want to live denying their existence, she'd rather die proudly telling her daughters they're her family and that she loves them. Because the alternative was to basically send them away and never be able to tell them she loved them, especially after that fight they had. Wasit stupid of her to do? maybe. But she wasn't doing the smart thing, she was doing what she felt was important to her emotionally. Her life meant less to her than the lives of her daughters. Also as to why the villagers didn't fight back: the fishmen are too strong for them. Genzo is scarred because he tried to fight the fishmen and failed and the villagers basically gave up. I do recommend checking out the anime version of this arc, as I get the feeling you guys may enjoy it c:

Totally agreed with Jaby on the 2 old geezers dialogue being the standout of the episode. Even though the rest of the cast is doing a great job, I was gobbling up the diner scene between these 2 grizzled old seasoned veterans actors who were just flexing their acting chops. You could tell just by this short encounter that in terms of acting experience, they are miles ahead the rest of the cast. It had a gravita that was very much absent from the rest of the series. It felt like a rare moment when 2 actual humans were talking with each other, in a series filled with cartoonish characters. Almost like dropping a Martin Scorsese mafia dialogue in the middle of a saturday morning cartoon.

This context was excluded from the live action, but in the anime, Bellemere's decision to reveal Nami and Nojiko to Arlong makes so much more sense. In the anime, Nami and her sister were not in the house, but were hiding in the forest. The village doctor told them that to save Bellemere, the girls needed to set sail and leave the island for good. He knew that even if they could hide from Arlong this time without paying tribute, they wouldn't be able to hide forever and would eventually get caught. This would most likely result in the everyone's death for lying to Arlong. Bellemere realized that the girls were being forced to set sail alone, and knew that these children would die at sea. She chose to reveal them to Arlong so that their tribute would be paid and they wouldn't need to hide or sail, sacrificing her life so that her daughters could live. Also, Nami didn't choose to go to Arlong, she was forced to server, which is why she was chained down (she was still chained in the live action, but it didn't make as much sense because she was there "willingly" to fulfill their deal).
@joaniewwh3502
@joaniewwh3502 Ай бұрын
The thing is bellemere was a marine and knew either she's dying or both kids would be, because she couldn't afford to pay for their tribute. She picked them to live. 100k for 1 adult and 50k for 1 child. She needed 200k but she only had 100k. Honestly, even if she denied they were her daughters, it doesn't change the fact that they're "unpaid." In that moment, i believe she knew her time was up as she was not letting nojiko and nami die. So she didn't deny them in her last moment.

And the live Action did make a lot of creative changes in the show for the live action show.

Nami's mom was about to die already during marine battle but she lived after seeing nami and nojiko. Later, she created a family with her two daughters but Nami saying she was not her real daughter impacted her. It was a lot of subtle acting from nami and her mom during her death scene where her saying she has two daughers to arlong means everything to her. Arlong saying she lives alone in this house also meant nami and nojiko were not her daughers. It was a little more explored in manga and anime but in the tv series it was a lot more subtle.

In the manga, the scar guy actually makes up a lie about the plates in Bellemere's house and says "We were gonna come over for dinner this evening." Arlong believes him and he almost leaves but Bellemere stops him to say she has 2 daughters. There are 2 reasons for this: Nami and Nojiko would have to leave the island or live in hiding, both would be very risky for their lives. Also Bellemere just fought with Nami about how they were not even family so she didn't want to deny she had daughters.

In the anime, Nami told her sister, Nojiko about her deal with Arlong almost immediately after making the deal. Then Nojiko, without Nami knowing, told the rest of the village about the deal. So the villagers only *pretended* to hate Nami, so she wouldn’t feel guilty if she ran away, adding an emotional gut punch that isn’t in this version.

Here are changes from the original that don't really feel natural : - In OG, Nami told Nojiko about the 100 million berrys when they were kids who then told the villagers about it. They decided to keep it a secret to not put pressure on Nami to save them. In LA, Nojiko and the village actually hate her. - As a sign of solidarity for Nami and her arlong tattoo, Nojiko gets tattoos herself. Now that Nojiko hated Nami until she found out about the 100 million berries, she just got a tattoo. - Arlong sees Nami's maps in Belle-Mère's house in the flashback and decides to keep her prisoner because of her talent. Doesn't make sense why they'd chain her if she came willingly in the LA. - Luffy doesn't know about Nami's backstory in the OG, as he walks away because Nojiko gives the crew an ultimatum. To go away if they listen to what happened to her and the village. Him saying "I don't" to Nami's "You don't know anything about what happened here" rings false, since he does. - Arlong attacking Cocoyashi doesn't make sense as its safety is the condition for Nami to stay in his crew. - Nami's despair at the end of the episode comes because on top of her money being stolen, the villagers decide to go and die fighting Arlong in the OG. Loved the series, but the writing does feel worse in those last two episodes because they originally planned to film 10 episodes but the higher ups changed their mind.

i think this is the first big moment where i definitely preferred the original source material. in the original, the entire town knew about the deal, but they never said anything to Nami about knowing because they didn't want to further burden her with expectations of freedom. the Arlong tattoo is also why Nojiko had so many tattoos in the first place, so Nami wouldn't feel more alone. after the money was stolen, the villagers gathered to march on Arlong Park to fight for their freedom and Nami tries to tell them it's okay and she can just start over, it won't take as long now that she's gotten better at stealing. but they knew Arlong would just keep setting things up to steal the money or have it lost or whatever and they would never have their freedom. THAT is when she starts stabbing her tattoo and begs Luffy for help, when the money's gone and everyone she cared about was walking to their deaths.
