How Zeff knew Garp was Luffy family could be explain by Garp being a polarizing admiral in the Marines, Zeff would know his full name. When Luffy signed the bill Zeff came out saying who the hell is Monkey D Luffy. Zeff put 2 and 2 together.

*About the racism:* they just brought up it earlier in the show the same way they did with Garp's granpa info, in the manga everything Arlong did seems kinda random and superficial but in the future we get the background in why he hate humans so much, not to justify of course but to understand his behavior, you'll understand better when you get to the fishman island arc in the manga.

Regarding the fishman and racism discussion: you're right and this is not very well developed at Arlong Park arc on the manga but all I can say is that the show pulls info from later in the story and this is one the examples. You'll find out more later as you keep reading. 😊

I think they've done it because in reality someone who's been oppressed will harbor hatred towards the oppressor so Arlong only making an off the cuff remark aboutt it wouldn't work aswell in Live action as it does in the Manga, either that or their doing it in a way to compress the original material kinda like how Garp is here now rather than the arc he is revealed in allowing them to cut that arc down to a single event later on.

Emily Rudd is an absolutely amazing actor. To be honest, they all portrayed the characters perfectly. Emily herself has been a Nami fangirl since she was a child. And they have all loved this anime for a long long time. I am so looking forward to Season 2. We are just waiting for a nod from Netflix, but the writers have stated that season 2 is already written, and we will hopefully get it 12-18 months after the strike is over.

Something that isn't made clear here that'll clarify how everyone knows Garp and Luffy's relationship somehow: Monkey D. Garp, aka "the hero of the marines," is a household name in the One Piece world. All they need to put two and two together is Luffy proudly saying his full name.

I believe in the entire manga no one ever mentions Garp´s full name - we only know about it thanks to an Oda box during his introduction. It also makes sense because this should be considered a secret by the world government.

At the point in the manga where Oda was writing the East Blue saga, a lot of world building wasn't fleshed out yet. This series was made with the knowledge of everything that's happened in the manga and anime, so they're trying to include stuff that wasn't introduced until much later in the manga so that they can better tie the whole story together. Examples being Garp being brought in a lot earlier, Arlong's backstory with the racism he experienced as a child warping him into what he is today, etc.

The oldies like zeff and Mihawk were around long enough to know that Garp name is Monkey D. Garp. So when they hear Monkey D. Luffy it's not hard for them to connect the dot.

Some of yall ain't reading the same series. As someone who's been reading OP since 2002 and has reread it multiple times nah Usopp wasn't near as bad as Sakura was early on and he does do things. In Syrup Village he helped take out Jango (LA took it out), in Baratie he didn't do much, in Arlong Park he took out Chew, Little Garden and Alabasta he did a lot, he did things in Skypeia, he did things in Water 7/Enies Lobby. Usopp does stuff, the only problem is people think "doing things" equates to defeating a villain when OP isn't really about that. His character is about being fearful and afraid and overcoming that. If you can't respect that then shit, I don't know what to tell you. Still you can't say he doesn't do anything nor can you say he's boring because from a writing perspective it's difficult to write an Usopp type character compared to a writing a Zoro type.

I feel like you guys are so tough on Usopp but he still has pretty solid moments even early before sogeking. This show unfortunately took out one of his biggest moments in his own arc where he stood up to protect Kaya, almost gettin his head split open and basically gave episode 4 to Luffy and Zoro instead. He's a normal guy amongst very abnormal people, but he'll still show out despite not wanting to be there and support his friends.

I think that's why he's hard to like. He just kinda sucks the energy down because he doesn't really get the chance or power to do anything in these early arcs, so when he shows up he's not contributing or actively getting in the way while talking like he's the king of the world. He's the boastful cocky character that doesn't back it up until much later.

Some of which they haven’t even touched yet on their read through. Arlo mentioning the racism and persecution of the fishmen is equivalent to introducing Baroque Works already or revealing Garp is Luffy’s Grandfather already.

26:08 you probably just haven't read far enough. What Arlong says there is true, it's just that it's explained quite later on. That's one of the amazing things about one piece - Oda sprinkled a fucktonne of pieces of information early on in the story and all of it gets either called back upon, explained or is literally a crucial part of the story later on.

"You can tell who's a main character by how they look" That's not a budget issue with the show, that's literally just a classic trope of anime. Especially shonen anime. Three villagers in earth tone rags next to their life long best friend that has electric pink hair spiked with enough product to decimate a palm forest and wearing clothing that defies the laws of physics and no one ever comments on it.

Thanks for going through the recreation of that scene in detail. I felt exactly the same about the LA adaptation of Zoro's battle with Mihawk -- so faithful to the comics and anime, and delivering the right feels. And Marketa: Shanks does have a mustache! It's kind of light, and links with his beard, but it's there all the same.

Don't worry about the fishman slavery and racism, you'll get there in time in the manga, just know that it is canonical and makes a lot of sense that Arlong is like this in the live action. By the way, don't hate on Usopp, he is a great character, he is just a nomal dude that is getting caught up in fight between super freaks that can level mountains and whole islands if they wanted to, his cowardice is warranted, also, his is the both the marksman and the bard of the crew, his exaggerated tales of their adventures is part of his character and lromise to Kaya, besides, Luffy and the crew don't mind him telling those stories.

Navi mentioning Soge King just gave me a vision of how effing brilliant the Soge King theme song and opening montage would be in live action. Using era appropriate smoke bombs and the like effects Ala Tokusatsu Spidereman other tv shows of the era. I'm pretty sure that people like Merry and the mouse guy are meant to be regular humans, they just have a character theme. Also about the fishman racism, I won't say too much because I don't want to spoil but its a topic brought up later in the manga and was only sort of implied during Arlong park, so the live action show just took the later context and applied it to the Arlong story.

"The Straw Hats are also called the Mugiwara Pirates." And pirates are also called kaizoku, it's not a different name, it's just a different language. Although Mugiwara Kaizokudan is more literally translates to the Straw Pirate Crew.

I feel like the thing that everyone (especially people who are big manga readers) misses is a lot of the older more powerful pirates and warlords probably know Garp’s full name, it’s not exactly a secret, and Luffy’s opening gambit in every situation is saying “I’m Monkey D. Luffy, and I’m going to be king of the pirates!” So it’d actually be far weirder if people like the warlords and older senior marines and lifelong pirates *didn’t* know. Hell, they probably can all connect the dots about any character names Monkey D. The fact that the Straw-Hats don’t know until the reveal speaks to their relative youth and naivety and lack of info outside of the east blue and local concerns.
