I was surprised that Greg seemed to be missing this point. I understand that a genuine collector wants their market to be legitimate, but Greg should be more able to understand how the owners/investors of a grading company who grade and sell their own "collections" (through an auction house that they also have ownership/investments in) can easily manipulate the market for their own gain.

@@unboxingretro1375 yeah but if the values you take as a reference are based on a specific auction house, with suspicious ties with a specific grading company, and all those values are from games sold at that auction house graded by that specific company, and in some cases they are bought by the auction house owner or associates of his, it sounds like market manipulation

Grading services are a big scam now. The idea that you pay based on what your items value will be makes no sense at all. It's no harder to grade a 10.0 rare perfect game than it is to grade a 5.0 common game. Grading service should be based only on the time, the skill, and the materials involved in slabbing the submission. When you start factoring in value you already have a major problem. And that major problem is that it's in the grading companies best interest to give better grades that increase items value so they get paid more. That is inherently flawed and I'm not sure when that started. When Beckett started grading service they didn't run it by value. They gradded the cards as it should be. They only had one flat grading system. Memorabilia, autograph,vintage, normal cards were all handled the same way. Then you started getting different scales for vintage, and all of a sudden there were different scales for everything. And there was a normal service, and an economy sevice. And don't even get me started on PSA. Who famously graded a ton of bogus autographs that a fairly well known forger did. And he pointed them out and PSA stood by it despite the guy who did the fake autographs saying he did them and they were fake. All of these companies have questionable business practices and none of them are doing things up and up. It's BS and no one should be supporting it.

Yeah, there's clearly a body of people feeding into the speculation and who are deeply enough in it that they think "I'm one of the few who this is great for" and I think that Greg cautiously sees himself as such. It's very very very frustrating to see speculation in retro games at all, in any form, let alone in such a fraudulent manner. Without it, prices would reflect the interest of those who value the games themselves and not the interest of those capitalizing on that value. A capitalization that improves the world for no one but yourself, and at the same time takes opportunity for enjoyment from others.

What makes this so interesting (even to the individuals who do not collect games) is that this scenario can be applied to any collectibles market. A lot of people are collectors - comics, coins, toys, cards - it’s crazy how easily markets can be manipulated. I unloaded some of my rarer cards for a total of over a couple thousand because I needed to clear space for a move to a new place. These cards will just be resold at a higher value in a couple of days by those buyers, but they buy anything as long as they are in reasonable shape.

Before I even watch this I just wanted to say Karl has always been the most open and transparent youtuber on speedrunning topics, and his interest in fair competition seems to be one of his biggest driving forces. Which is really something everyone can get behind. The only people who can’t are more interested in cheating. With the whole dream situation Karl seemed to do the most research out of anyone on KZfaq and the most work to really piece together the timeline. It’s quite remarkable to me that he was able to convince me dream cheated but did so unknowingly, honestly without DarkViperAU’s interview first I may not have agreed with that however. All of his legal dealings with Billy he was extremely transparent on, he had motivation to speak about of course cause Billy was ridiculous but he also had motivation to be quiet I’m sure. Love his deep dives into everything and it always seems like he tries to get the biggest picture along with the most important details. He also is quick to correct himself if someone points out a mistake.

Consumer fraud is commonly defined as deceptive business practices that cause consumers to suffer financial or other losses. The victims believe they are participating in a legal and valid business transaction when they are actually being defrauded. Fraud against consumers is often related to false promises or inaccurate claims made to consumers, as well as practices that directly cheat consumers out of their money. So, (1) have video game consumers in the graded video game business suffered financial or other losses? (2) have these consumers been given false promises or have inaccurate claims been made to these consumers? (3) have these consumers been cheated out of their money?

One of the main issues i personally have with the whole grading of sealed video games is that the main emphasis of the grading relies primarily on the condition of a 5 cent ordinary standardised plastic seal that has zero artistic value and is not even part of the game and not part of the trademark of the company (developer) that made the art/game, that is really some major bullshit and on the other side the condition of the actual game in the sealed box has zero influence on the grading. In other words you might buy a sealed old game for a million dollar that maybe does not even work anymore or never even worked to begin it is completely possible that you buy a faulty copy for millions with how those companies grade if this is not some major bullshit in this market i don't know. Those grading companies could easily require to break the seal of games for their grading process inspect all of the important things inside and actually primarily rate the important parts of a video game for their grading and just reseal the games afterwards there are a lot of great reseal tools available nowadys and those 5 cent plastic foils are for sure not the thing that carries the value in a video game especially when those grading companies anyways always put those games in their own boxes

Right now its because people say and believe that's what important and where the "Investment value" is in sealed. Right now a sealed 8 will sell for tons more than a 9 CIB where as the CIB is nicer in all aspects inside and out. True facts that sealed is much rarer than opened CIB so rarity drives price in my comparison more than condition. With that being said there is 2 sides to prices in the games market unlike comic books where comparing Suprman #1 condition is only factor in price unless there is outside force from pedigree. Hey Greg, I came across your channel from a rec while I was watching Reserved Investments, you're making top quality content. It's very cool how you encourage discussion and reply to all questions; and much respect for not Patreon ebegging or using sponsors. It's a breath of fresh air honestly, at least for me. Today I rewatched one of your vids where you were discussing your first Yugioh purchase. You mentioned that the specific card you bought had over 70,000 graded entries in the pop reports, it really made me wonder: what percentage are legit entries, and what percentage are people cracking out their cards or crossing over hoping for a better grade? If we look at the same thing in graded video games (when the companies finally release pop reports), how many can we expect to be legit there? I think it's a really important topic & no one talks about it. All the resubmitting that happens is corrupting the pop reports, making it hard to properly evaluate the market. Maybe I'm overstating the impact of it though? Thanks a lot
@GetTheGreg
@GetTheGreg 2 жыл бұрын
Hey man! I appreciate the kind sentiment! I think 70,000 has to be a typo or mis-hear haha. I just checked the pop count right now on Thousand Dragon 1st Ed. - 203 total graded, 79 in PSA 10. And it's one of those things that's super hard to quantify. With cards, the highest overrepresentation will be with PSA 9s as people crack and hope for the 10, but I'm not sure if it's fair to say 10% overrepresentation or 20%. But yea, this is definitely something you have to think about when evaluating a pop report.
@Chinesemythdragon6

@@GetTheGreg Lol, I just checked and you were saying that there were 71 Thousand Dragon PSA 10's. Since I was groggy and only listening, I interpreted it as 71,000, whoops. Anyway, yeah your figure sounds about right, all we can do is guess. So do you think it's a similar figure, like 10%-20% generally for graded video games? It's helpful that you mention PSA 9's are the most often resubmitted since people are trying for a 10. Maybe it's a similar thing with graded video games, like WATA 9.6/9.4's or imperfect seal ratings often trying for a better grade. Especially considering their poor reputation at rating seals, it'd be smart to keep resubmitting high-value games until they give you the A+ or A++. WATA seriously needs to overhaul their seal rating system, I don't really even take it seriously at all.
@GetTheGreg
@GetTheGreg 2 жыл бұрын
@Hans Dusseldorf I don't think it has been as prevalent in video games as cards, yet? But yea, we will probably see it in the 9.4/9.6 range the most. Cash on delivery meant that when he opened his mail and took the gems out, gold would get sent automatically to the seller. Instead of accepting the gem would just leave them in his mailbox for 30 days at which point they automatically got sent back. My two cents is thst Heritage Auctions' statement on population reports,, while positive, is meant to shift the narrative towards grading data transparency and away from their own lack of transparency regarding conflicts of interest and market manipulation. They need to do a lot more than call for a population report. Full disclosure on whenever partners bid or buy, and clear disclosure when a related party is selling are both minimal standards that need to be met.

@@GetTheGreg Wata gradings mean absolutely nothing and you can easily get sealed for cheaper. They purposely targeted sealed games with a decent enough supply that other people would pay for grading and auctions. That auction is even citing the fake 1.5 million "recent auction price". The whole point of the scheme was to con other speculators into buying games for silly prices. If you want to gamble that a speculator will buy your games, go or it. Just do not try to convince people any of this is legit. Its all marketing to scare speculators with FOMO. You might as well buy the VGA rated one right next to it with the same number of bids and ending for a mere $4.5k, have it regraded by wata and flip it for $300k! I wouldn’t like to legally restrict WATA from saying they think game values will go up in general or anything. That’s normal business PR. They're not just talking up their service, though. WATA is supposed to be judging purely the *physical quality* of the good put in front of them. Absolutely great discussion! Regarding the WATA backlog, I hadn't thought about it, but I think Karl is right to think something fishy may be going on here (of course evidence would be needed). My only experience with this kind of slowdown/backlog was dictatorial/poor management who wanted to maintain control and not share/delegate the responsibility of decision making. I'm assuming it isn't a technological issue in this case, and I"m sure there are a host of other possible reasons. If it is a management issue the reason for why they might not feel comfortable to entrust newly trained staff to grade games could be numerous reasons, lack of well defined processes, fear of lack of consistency, superiority complex, pride, but perhaps albeit unlikely it might undermine potential backhand agreements in place with current graders for consigned games. I realize there is no evidence to support this though, I just thought I'de mention it as a possibility though.

When regular people read headlines about retro video games selling for insane amounts of money, they remember and maybe even talk about that even though they know nothing about the VG collecting market. Then when they go to sell a retro game they have just laying around, they may mistakenly believe it is worth more than it is. love the interview so far. but again he stand firm on collectors don't buy expensive games because we don't see it on the gram. yet maxmoefoe have bought ishihara gx, which he showed off to mizkif and not his own fans, and had the pokemon snap gyarados for years before he showed it on his channel. and those are big money cards

Karl. You make a great journalist, lawyer, and investigator. It's affecting the whole retro and modern gamers collecting. Sealed, unsealed, CIB, and incomplete games are effected by the pandemic. I think the pandemic is an excuse for WATA to inflated the prices of video games. They probably see retro gaming (Gamecube) and others are exceeding the regular prices. Mario 64 ($1.5 million) was fishy and raise many questions in the gaming community.

The one thing I don't agree with is the assertion that all of this doesn't effect those that don't get their games graded or just collect for the fun of it. It does. Go back five years and you could pick up a dozen SNES games for $20 on ebay. Now, a dozen loose games will set you back $100 or more. Why? Sellers see these high priced sales and then apply those principles to loose games. "Well, if a brand new one goes for $1000, I should be able to get $200 for mine, right?" So, yes, it is effecting the entire retro market as a whole. I'm not saying that all old games should be cheap, but the fact of the matter is that prices everywhere are inflated as a result. That's all I really have to say, there. You folks collecting sealed games, you do you. It just kind of makes me sad that practices like this are just accepted, and worse, expected.

I would highly disagree with your pricing there. 2016 was one of the first "bubbles" that occurred where a cartridge of Mario 64 was pushing $50CAD. Nothing was cheap. That boat had already long sailed unless you were putting in footwork at garage sales. Might there be some spill over into CIB games? Of course. But that is largely put into exceptional copies. the cartridge market is largely unaffected and driven by actual player demand, in most cases. Sure, people become idiots with pricing. But that's nothing new haha. You'll always have people that are clueless and read a yahoo article and now think they have gold. I'll actually try to put something together using pricecharting data to try and see how the price of cartridges and average CIB prices have moved over the years. The effects of corona in general will be hard to account for, but hopefully get some concrete data to make correlations. Edit to add: if you are seeing prices rise in the cartridges you're looking at, unless they are "rare" to begin with, you can likely remain patient and get a better price in a bit once the market calms down a bit. Of course, another wave of shutdowns could throw everything out of whack again haha.

11:00 If you think grading is a necessary part of collecting, that's very funny. I have a bunch of super valuable games and they're all as I bought them as a kid (ohhhhh, I'm one of them), I still value them personally so have them on my shelf. Slabbing them would be gross to me, as would selling them to a speculator.
