The tulip parallel is a good way, in Karl's video at least, to introduce laymen to the concept of speculation, bubbles and crash. It's used as an introduction to get everybody up to speed on the basics before diving into the meat of the topic. I feel like it was used appropriately here.

True. Makes the concept easy to understand. Surely they aren't the same but I don't think having two exact or almost exact examples were the goal here.

It was but I also understand gregs annoyance. If you have ever been around any collector´s group no matter for what every person will be constantly calling items going up in price a bubble even if there are clearly fundamental reasons for the increase and even way more proper current day parallels that could be used. While Karl did use the comparison correctly there is a lot of people who do not understand it well and will use it wrong due to hearing it in a video like this. It´s kinda like how when you think that history repeats itself and you start studying certain events you start to see patterns but yet if you actually take into account the nuance of each situation it´s never really comparable.
@Foslopac

The glaring difference between tulips and games is that you can't simply buy seeds to plant and grow a factory sealed NES game from 1987. The total population already exists it and can't be inflated the same as tulips. We don't yet know true pop counts, but it's impossible to expand them beyond what's already been preserved, discovered or not.

Under actual scams and illegal affairs, yes. The most damning thing in this entire video would be if actual proof of heritage either shill bidding, or artificially purchasing their own games and then reselling them again, were to come to light. The stuff about pawn Stars, or Eric, or whoever talking highly about the market or speculating in it is the same type of activity you'll see in any kind of financial market. Hell, Jim Cramer has a whole TV show where he will hype or slam stocks. Is it necessarily the most ethical activity in all instances? No, I think we can agree that at times, it gets pretty murky. But the people controlling the money are going to feed opinions left, right, and Center no mater what happens (all of which will likely be bullish) and we have to do our best to navigate and act with level-heads.

@@GetTheGreg Unethical but legal behavior that is preying upon people is enough to condemn and raise red flags about. It's exactly the realm where we should because there aren't any legal means of repercussion. It's also distressing for those of us who, in general, hold the sentiment that speculators moving in on retro game collecting and viewing it as a market to be pumped up, perverts and excludes us from what we love. It seems like this is what you are in the business of collecting to do (not too familiar with your channel) but at least respect the rest of us enough to stand for transparant, ethical speculation.

@@GetTheGreg You *can't* handwave Heritage Auctions selling the SMB cart (partially) to its own founder, and then WATA commenting on it when that same buyer is an advisor for and investor in the company, all completely undisclosed. That's not "pretty murky"; that's downright unacceptable. Those sorts of relationships legally must be disclosed. What looked to the public like three independent parties (auction house, buyer, grader) were all intimately tied and in-bed with each other. At that point it's actual manipulation, not just trying to questionably build hype and puff up your product. Not to mention the "Carolina Collection". Having WATA add a special surtitle to the games its own director owned and had his own company grade, and then writing blog posts and press releases hyping up the sale of the collection without disclosing this involvement, is absolutely unacceptable. Even if there happened to not be shill bidding or overgrading, we're already well past the "maybe unethical but probably still legal, get involved at your own risk" point. Shill bidding and overgrading would only make the situation even *more* screwed up than it already is.

@@GetTheGreg The most damning thing is them artificially increasing the market. As both Wata and Heritage make % based money off of the perceived value of the game. By pumping the market with million dollar sales they inflate the prices of other games as well. They don't need million dollar game sales (which is why they fake them by selling them to themselves) they do this to inflate the market value of the market it self which results in higher game prices for the games that do actually sell. Which makes them more money both on the grading side and the auction side.

I can respect your side of the issue since you are into the sealed gaming collecting hobby. What I am disappointed with is how you completly disregarded the impact this has on other aspects of the hobby. Regular games that are worth $5 priced at $30? Sure my collection has dramatically grown in value but adding to it also has slowed to a crawl. Places that typically were perfect for deals like garage sales have morphed into the dreaded "I know what I have" crowd. No they don't actually know what they have, but due to the publicity around these inflated prices, they want to jack their prices up as well. Many got into this hobby for nostalgia, entertainment, but also due to the affordability of the systems, peripherals and subsequent games. Some of us like to collect to play the games. I know crazy right? That said, I am fine with games holding varying values. Obviously if a game is more rare, and especially rare as well as good, it naturally would cost more than the common and easy to find games. That's just common sense. What I am not fine with is prices being inflated because people are literally breaking the law to make money and perverting the market of mine as well as others' cherished hobby.

The fact that there is a 20% fee isn't the problem itself. The problem is the conflict of interest, in that they make more money by speculating prices higher than reasonable. It's not that it's some hidden fee that's the problem, it's what it means for the auction house bottom line. Because it is a percentage, they make more when the market is speculated higher.

“Only when the market crashes you can get into that talk”. Dude, did you even take intro to economics? It’s not a matter of if, but when. “Nobody is getting tricked by auction fees”. Are you even watching the video, he says that it’s in the auction houses benefit that the price inflates. Yes it is a scam to falsely drive up the value of products. You’re doing mental gymnastics trying to be contrarian. The value is artificial, it does matter that people will lose a lot of money because they were tricked. This is the hardest video to watch.

The auction house benefits far more by simply having consumer faith. Pointing to the obvious fee structure of literally every auction house that exists is meaningless. Especially when talking about the video game portion, which is such an insignificant amount of Heritage's overall revenue.

@@GetTheGreg It's not meaningless, because it's revealing that through collusion the auction house benefits a lot more. So, yea, they all have fee's, everyone knows, but when those fee's benefit from foul play, that changes the narrative, because the auction house could benefit hundreds, maybe thousands of times more. The artificial inflation is the crime here, and In the video it's quite clear they are in cahoots, in a bad way.

@@GetTheGreg Hopefully 5 months later you've figured this out by now... It is NOT about the fees. It's about the one auction site known for selling high price games, and the grading company they are working hand in hand with, Wata. What does that mean... it means people will get their games graded by wata (paying wata), it means people will sell games on heritage (paying heritage)... the point being made in this video is NOT about the sealed collectible market, it's about these two companies and their shadey practices that are causing the market to inflate artificially... making them a lot of money in the process.

I’ll add one last thing. It was not ok long ago that I could buy new old stock and crack those games open. You may ask “why would you buy new old games?” Because it was a) pretty cheap (comparatively) and b) it was nice to get a disc that was scratched or a cartridge that didn’t have food stuck in the port. That is just not possible anymore. I get that the sealed game market and “regular” gamers seem to be separate groups but they aren’t THAT separate. This isn’t like coins or comic books. Those items were circulated or read, used in some way. Sealed games, they never got to live a normal life. They are trapped under plastic waiting to be played. Maybe I’m just personifying the games too much but I literally find it sad to have games sealed forever.

The issue here is that a couple of thieves look like they planned that speculative bubble, gonna get rich of it and then watch as the video game market crash. It's so hard to say what the actual deep-pocket speculators/investors are thinking and how they are moving within the market. Lower end stuff, I see no effect at all. After seeing the video I absolutely think it will effect the graded video game market. WATA Games & Heritage Auctions are tarnished names within the industry. Their name and goodwill have been ruined. Everyone needs to understand that at this point in time and people shouldn't make up excuses for them. It's made people aware and Karl's video was like pouring salt and fresh squeezed lemon juice on an open wound. Look at what happened to James Halperin when he tried to manipulate the coin market in the 80's. Investors in the graded coin markets are much much wealthier than collectors in the video game market by far and it's not even close. The coin market is bigger as well. James went up against the BIG money and he lost his shirt by getting sued. Now Halperin is back to his manipulative ways but in a much smaller market manipulating the little guy, he's not up against big Wall St. money or extremely wealthy investors who will take him to task with high priced lawyers lmao! I don't think graded video games are going away but when the bottom falls out of this market due to a correction you'd better hope that your not holding a lot of these graded video games that you think are worth a small fortune or you may get burned. It would be much better to be a seller into this market than a buyer. The graded video game market equates to "toxic assets" the way I see it unless you have the NWC 1990 carts, Sticker sealed Mario Bros., or Stadium Events. The true holy grails of video game collecting, everything else comes second.

Hey, I had already clicked into the video prior to ensure I even wanted to watch it and that it was indeed covering the topics I thought it would. So yes, I had seen the opening intro and clicked around a bit. I have actually watched most of Karl's videos but this account isn't my main "viewing" account. It's part of why I was so intrigued when I saw Karl was now covering this topic!
@samysnes

Ok so I've watched your entire coverage of Karl's video (I didn't watch your conclusion at the end full disclosure). It was good to get your opinion throughout the entire thing and I agree and disagree with a couple points you brought forward. First of all, thanks for admitting that there were a lot of stuff you didn't know about this whole thing. I've been seeing a lot of backlash from people in the scene dismissing the whole thing claiming that they didn't learn anything new. Basically being elitist and gatekeeping the scene from an outsider. I feel like a lot of people are just brushing aside the whole conclusion to this video! Which is the most important part that points out that there is LEGAL PRECEDENT about this kind of practices. It's against federal law enforced by the FTC! How can someone defend that is beyond me. I whole heartedly agree with you that population reports won't solve much. Especially if there is still a lot of regrading and shill bidding going on. Finally, the point that I've been arguing a lot is that people tend to downplay the impact that this shit has on the rest of the used market. It has a ripple effect for sure! And although I agree with you that including panning shots of ebay listed is maybe not the best to demonstrate that, I must point out that when you said at the end "come on Karl, take out this BS", you happened to say it on a frame that shows a listing for a 500$ SM64 loose cart that says "6 sold". This could also be market manipulation but it also proves that it definitely has an effect on the used market as well. I'm willing to bet that they had a lot to do with the second surge that happened post covid craze. Covid is definitely not over but the initial craze was on the decline before this second surge. Good video. I enjoyed being able to discuss about it in the comments and I gave you a thumbs up because of that Diablo shrine back there :P So glad that PC games collecting hasn't been affected much lol
@GetTheGreg

A lot of the Jim stuff is what was really interesting to me. It's one of those super tricky areas now where he has almost been put in a "guilty until proven innocent" types of scenarios regarding shill bidding and potentially buying the games and selling them again. Without proof of those actions, it's a really bad light on the entire auction company (yes, Jim was sketchy in that past, but that does not equate to him doing it now). As someone who buys/sells/collects in this market, it's super hard to know what to believe haha. And eBay manipulation is definitely a thing, and probably the easiest form to do. Hell, I could do it myself with 3 alt accounts. Much like heritage, you really have to examine everything taking place and try to see what's real and what's not, to the best anyone can. That whole "6 sold" on the Mario 64 is an old trick designed to create the illusion of them actually selling. I would bet anything that none actually "sold". Either way, it's going to be interesting to see what happens from here. I appreciate you watching and commenting!

37:10 It is not that simple on “how is anyone getting f’ed over” because of the predatory nature of how Wata presents trends in the media and how Otis is to this day paying KZfaqrs to cheerily promote buying shares in Wata games hinting that the prices are on the up and up. People don’t have to be forced to buy a game share for it still be the case that they were preyed upon in a situation with an asymmetry of power and information. Especially if the intention is to pump and dump, people they are selling on getting in on it now are being preyed upon. Not everyone is going to have a deep dive understanding of things and they might have a parasocial relationship with the KZfaqr telling them to go for it. Maybe that’s the first they heard! I just saw John Riggs doing these sort of promos on a video he posted today, it makes my stomach turn. It’s too predatory to simply put the onus on the common person and say “ya fools is ya fault ya got burned, congrats on the winners.” Is that really how we socially want to handle this sort of thing? People in power here like Heritage and Wata have an insight and level of control over the direction of this that it does reach the threshold of a regulatory body to investigate as well as raising of public awareness.

I haven't watched your entire reaction to Karl's video (which I have watched), but after about 10 minutes, I just want to say I think you were too disrespectful, condescending and reactionary to the content of Karl's video, which I thought was really well put together and was clear so that everyone could understand the points he was making with absolutely no knowledge of the subject matter. This man obviously put a lot of work into it, and has a lot of evidence, and the way you treated the content during the first 10 minutes was quite disgraceful and uncharitable. You need to be more rational and posses an active mind when being presented with new ideas before dismissing them out of hand so quickly - it's highly arrogant. This propping up of prices doesn't just affect ignorant speculators! All of the versions of the games will continue to go up as a result of this as well, which will make them more difficult for the every day person to purchase them at reasonable value or at all due to more competition. You can try to condescendingly dismiss this all you want, but pricecharting and other sites show this is happening. Many games have increased by 5-6x their original amounts even without the box and manuals just over the last couple of years. Also, even if this does just hurt speculators, it's still hurting people. These companies are doing some pretty shaddy stuff to prop up the prices and regardless of how many people are affected, what is wrong is wrong. There's laws against this unethical behaviour for a reason. If it was just stupidity, I would agree with you, but the unethical behaviour driving it is a real problem.
@JamesLewis2
@JamesLewis2 2 жыл бұрын
Throughout the video, the primary impression that I got from you is that as long as one does not personally take the speculative bait, no harm, no foul; the key insight that you provided while reacting to the video is that Deniz Kahn was an avid, well-known video-game collector well before founding Wata Games. I briefly tried to find out what the oldest third-party coin-grading company was, based on what Diddles said (he didn't include "third-party" but without that qualifier, basically any coin-dealer from the beginning of unofficial standards in the late 1800s would count as a first-party coin-grading company), and it seems to be ANACS, a company founded by the American Numismatic Association in 1972, which originally just certified whether the coins were genuine and didn't even slab them; I don't know whether ANACS started grading coins, whether by the ANA's own standards or otherwise, by the time NCI was founded. (Later on, Diddles said that ANACS was founded in 1979, but maybe that's the year when it started grading, rather than just determining whether a coin was genuine.)

When you talk about Eric and you make a parallel with crypto to demonstrate that no one is getting scammed, I feel like it's a bit unfair to compare crypto, something with no collectible value with a physical collectible object. I believe that what Karl was trying to convey is that the people who actually collected these things to own them and keep them for the joy of collecting were the ones getting scammed because they were now being forced to pay a manipulated price to expand their collection. You could argue that nobody forced them to do so but it's still shitty to financially bully someone out of their favorite hobby.
@GetTheGreg
@GetTheGreg 2 жыл бұрын
But if that's the case and point to get across, using the word "scam" there makes it seem like people have no free will to make the decision to "not buy" if they now seem the price to be not worth it for themselves. It does suck to be bullied out, but that's more of an emotional argument, then.
@samysnes
@samysnes 2 жыл бұрын
@@GetTheGreg Technically, what you are describing is "extortion". If you look up the definition of scam, it's not about being forced to give away your money. A scam is just deception and I think the use of the word is somewhat justified here. Eric manipulated the market in a way that deceived a lot of people into thinking these games were now actually worth that much more. I shouldn't have used the word forced in my comment, I was just bouncing off of what you said in your analysis. Take the saudi prince email scam for example. No one is forcing people to send them money... yet it's still a scam. I feel like the true definition of scam is getting mixed up a lot lately. Anyways, I do apreciate your interventions during the video, I'll keep watching. And I also apreciate you taking the time to reply to comments.

@samysnes
@samysnes 2 жыл бұрын
@@GetTheGreg Yeah it's very hard to prove intent and yes if you look at the interviews he's given he is obviously very honest about his intentions. The way I see it though is being honest about your intentions of pumping & dumping doesn't make it less of a scam. Confessing to wanting to scam people doesn't negate the scam itself in my humble opinion but I guess I'm more sensitive to that than most people. Also, I feel like people don't consider enough that these are material items that can be used and enjoyed and interacted with. I have less of an issue when it's just vaporware and digital assets meant solely for trading, that's fair game. But when you're messing with people's prized possessions, entertainment or sentimental attachment to an object, I feel like it's more of an offense. But I see what you mean about him being at least more honest about his intentions in this market.

I find it odd how Karl presents this video as if WATA graded games will affect retro game collecting as a whole; collectors wanting to actually play the games they collect won't be affected since they are buying "decent" condition games that wouldn't grade high at WATA. WATA grading WILL affect sealeds/high grade completes, but people shouldn't worry about their hobby becoming unaffordable if they're just buying loose copies of games. The people responsible for causing loose copies to go up are other average joe collectors/enthusiasts, who keep games with no intent to sell. Not WATA. Less games on the market and more demand = prices go up.

This is just like any other speculative market. What? Am I supposed to think or feel bad about someone investing 100k of their own money in sealed video games because they may or may not know the true value of the item? It’s his 100k and what is true value anyway? It’s always a pump and dump at some point, one can only hope that the one holding the bag in the end (in this case a sealed video game) can at least appreciate the shelf trophy he/she got hehe.
