Hey, bro. I have an off-topic question: what does "IT" mean? I sent 2 games to cgc for the first time to get graded and only one of them was graded. The one that wasn't graded was my sealed bioshock limited edition with the big daddy toy inside. It's not a huge box. Only thing i got was a receipt of somewhat and had no grading and it said in capital letters "IT". Thanks.

@cieloknight "intelligible type". CGC doesn't grade any kind of oversized stuff. The biggest you can do are some steelbooks and games with slipcovers. All weird/oversized stuff can only be graded with VGA currently

The thing is generations of nostalgia will all be different. That’s where the secondary market comes from. Some people grew up playing Mario, some people Goldeneye, some Halo, etc. When they become adults they want to relive those moments and will ultimately pay for it or collect it. That’s why prices rise and fall. Newer things will be no different or exempt from that human condition

It's funny to consider that sports cards in the 90's went through a period of mass production where the supply was so high that everyone owned the cards that you could want and now you can pull them from dollar store packs 30 years later. However, if we want to contrast this idea to modern sports cards we have to check out the demand. While supply has decreased and more collectors have come on the horizon each new set brings a new aesthetic feel with new rookie cards and varying inserts. I believe that the hobby is in a great place right now. It is crazy to consider the boom that had taken place over the pandemic has perhaps inspired a generation of card collecting.

I struggled to get retail price for Mario 3D All Stars not long after it was "discontinued". I just wanted it gone, didn't even buy it to "invest" or make a profit, I just decided I didn't want it anymore. Looking at what it goes for now, I regret selling it so early, but it also didn't really look like the value was growing, so whatever. Games aren't investments, guys. Especially not PS5 and Series X, they're just glorified coasters with license keys on them. If you want to invest and grow your money, just buy SPY and sip on an Arnold Palmer until you can retire.

Mentioned it before, but Switch sells way more and better for me than anything else. It's crazy how high some of the games have shot up. Nothing graded, just sealed stuff I never got around to and wanted to unload to reduce clutter. I know a guy who bought two of pretty much every rare/popular SNES and PS1 games. I bought a ton of his used ones while his sealed are in bins because he got tired of selling and dealing with ebay. He has no idea how pricing has gone nuts over the past few years. @GetTheGreg
@GetTheGreg 24 күн бұрын
Yeaaaaa, as far as remakes and remasters go, it's almost always a net negative to the value of the original game (when talking about used copies specifically). Sealed copies don't really see any noticeable downturn and may even see heightened demand from increased awareness. The difference being that used copies' value are partially driven by people who want to actually play the game (and now have a cheaper/better/etc way of doing that) vs people buying sealed are only ever doing so to collect.

This is absolutely true. Some games are so rare that they actually aren't that valuable because they are just unknown by 99.9% of people and thus not valued or desired. Just because something is rare doesn't mean people will want it, and even if it's a banger game, if no one knows about it, then they won't care about it. In the same vein, some games can be super popular and common but as long as demand is high they will always be worth something, and people will find ways to differentiate and distinguish the "best" version or copy until they reach a level where it IS rare. US version, first print, box error, or some special revision number with an expoitable glitch, or an exclusive regional or store variant, etc. The paper mario thousand year door is the perfect example. Although I do wonder if supply can get to a point where all demand is met. The key there is if the brand/market is still growing, there will always be new people adding demand.

I did ponder for sometime thinking what does the term "rare" mean in the video game collecting market as it has been thrown around in different contexts. I concluded Rare does not equal low production numbers. It means the demand is growing greater than the supply, hence, driving up the price and desirability. Does condition support rarity? not really... but has some impact. But completeness does is a bigger factor to rarity

Swedens biggest retail chain for electronics and gaming "Elgiganten" means basically the giants of electronics, which has been around since 1995 here, they charge 160 USD for mario 3d all stars now. Now, im not one of these people who says everyone was wrong, because smaller countries market isnt the same as USA´s everytime, I get that, but clearly this game ended up being scalped and the biggest retailers are cashing in now for people who didnt pick it up at launch. So yes, a game like 3D all stars can still be "scalped" in smaller countries and you could have made a profit on it, just like RE4 remake collectors edition and Metroid Dread CE was also scalped and sold at launch for 30-40% over market price.

Obviously we can only speculate and things happen that are curve balls like covid. But I am suspicious that hobbies in general are sort of on a high right now. But who knows. I am certainly waiting to buy some expensive games in hopes they will go down because they are not rare. Silent Hill 2 on PS2 comes to mind for me. Game is not rare at all. It was a greatest hit on PS2 and sold 2 million copies I believe. Also with the remake coming out I am guessing it will go down like mario rpg did. I am curious is FOMO is playing a big part in a lot of the collecting scene as well.

I think, as we reach the nintendo switch end of life, people are buying those specific titles either for their collection if they dont have them, or because they think they'll gain value with time. Part of this is ... "Hey its zelda", "Hey its pokemon" and things like that, but i'm not sure, switch is a weird system and i expect Switch 2 to be backwards compatible (including the digital store).

I'm wondering if modern games will appreciate in value long term since most require downloads and patches to play or function properly. Very few are even complete on day 1 purchase. I'm massively skeptical that graded copies will hold value once servers eventually close and interest in the systems fade away.
@FakkaJoe
@FakkaJoe 25 күн бұрын
This is why you should research what games are physically produced where no patch or download is required. For example there are Switch cartridges out there for Zelda BOTW with the DLC included on the cartridge. Same goes for Pokemon Sword & Shield having editions with the DLC on cart. They did the same for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe but the last wave of DLC isn't on it sadly. Pokemon Scarlet & Violet has editions with only the 1st DLC on it but will still download the 2nd DLC when inserted, now for future gamers these Scarlet & Violet editions might become more valuable because they have the 1st DLC but also includes some patches that make the game a little bit better compared to the bad way it was launched. Cuphead on Switch was released so late that it includes the DLC on the cart, so also something people would want in the future. Also usually Limited Run Games or Super Rare Games have a complete version of the game where no downloads or patches are required. I could go on about this but it all comes down to doing some research into how a game is launched OR wait for revisions to come out that have either patches on the cartrigde or a complete version later down the line.

I think there's basically 3 different type of collector of modern sealed games: 1. Want's it 'cause they want's it. Doesn't care about anything else. Just want's it. 2. speculators with so much disposable money that even if they loose, who cares. Gamblers. 3. True believers! In their heart of hearts they "know" these things are going to appreciate. All 3 cases point to an economy that is still running VERY hot and serves as an indication that inflation has not peaked and there is still a long way to go.

That indicates something of a bubble, yes? I think all the speculation about the "end" of physical games has really spurred on a lot of people to collect who otherwise wouldn't have. Absolutely true on that, too. Who knows what everything will look like in 5-10 years, but current time, people certainly aren't shy to spend money on this stuff that has "endless" supply

Got a preorder for the new dragonball collectors! Was not easy, took some bot alerts, creating an account and saving payment information then some dumb luck on top of that. Problem is collector editions sometimes drop in price after release lmao
