In this video I go into how I published a photo on the front page of the New York Times, hands down one of the proudest moments in my career as a documentary filmmaker and photographer. I’ve watched a couple of your videos now and I have to say I think they’re great. Hearing about your experience coming to work as a photojournalist and then doc filmmaker makes it all seem somewhat possible. I’ve done a lot of work with politicians and my own channel has to do with journalism, but actually getting a job shooting for a news outlet feels quite out of reach. Guess it’s all about networking though. Looking forward to watching more of your stuff!

Thanks! I think it’s practicing to get good first, then networking. Either One without the other won’t be enough in the beginning. It’s a long haul no matter what you do though - the secret is to just keep going!

Good to hear you story bro. It's all too easy to assume people just got lucky when they get a break. You never see the blood, sweat and tears over the years that went into getting that break!

Great story. I hope they started paying you more than $25 after you got your foot in the door. I went the commercial photo route when I first started. Worked for free as a second/third assistant for a couple of months then started getting paid $50/day. This was back in 1990.

Such an informative and underrated video! I love how nonchalant you talk about doing some in crazy stuff like breaking into places, riots, death and chilling with monks but I can't even go to the shop without feeling awkward, out of place and like I am going to get into trouble....

Wow, I can't believe it you watched 'War photographer' when you teach English in Korea and it changed your way. Also I dreamed and tried to reach it too. However, I didn't recognize i have no talent on documentary work at that time. Still it feels like bittersweet dream. Anyway, your all the comments of this post make me to move again, Thanks!

LMK if you want to join me convincing Red and the Kingdom of Morocco to fund my documentary idea. off-topic: If you want to see an interesting guy - there was a French tv show in the 80s called Ushuaia which consisted of a one-man band doing stuff that makes Nat Geo look like NPR. This guy was Neistat on steroids.
