If you're a Fujifilm photographer recording JPEGs - either with or without the RAW file - you'll want to pay attention to your White Balance to have more consistent colors throughout a series of consecutive photos.
A little-known feature found in newer (2018+) Fujifilm cameras is Auto White Balance Lock. Here's how to set up and use AWB Lock in Fujifilm cameras.

WoW, you are the man!!! I have never seen anyone else explaining this feature. I guess 99.99% of Fuji users do not even know the existence of ABL.

Purchased an XT3 3 months ago. I am currently taking the PeltierPhotography Fuji Camera Fundamentals course. The course has made the many ways I can configure and setup my camera much easier. The course provides the insights and technical options which subsequently makes such items as exposure compensation, metering, bracketing and the mode selection easier to understand, especially in the context of setting up your XT3. The course is worth every penny. I WAS NOT SOLICITED OR COMPENSATED FOR THESE COMMENTS.

Hi John. I have watched several videos on WB/Custom WB & you are the only one who discussed colour balance lock. Some presenters were also Fuji only shooters.Saving this video & watching again tomorrow with my coffee & notepad. I use an X-T3 & recently purchased X-E4. Back to the manual on the X-E4.Thanks for separating the wheat from the chaff.

Yeah, Fujifilm just kinda added this feature starting with the X-T3 with little fanfare. I don't think many people know about it since it's buried in the menus and the manual just barely makes a mention of it. But it's very valuable to use! I appreciate the feedback.

Helpful video again John. I tend to use those grey transparent lens caps on my lenses, and then WB off that for moments that matter. I like how you're essentially doing the same with AWB but instead of menu diving to make a custom you are simply locking it in for that shooting moment. Nice trick.

Yeah that’s what I love about it - one button push, no menus.

Nice informative video. Regarding your example of the potted plant, I assume that if you want to take a picture of a specific part, say the pot, you recommend first taking a white balance reading of the potted plant at a distance and then using the white balance lock before taking a photo of a specific part, like the pot.

Yeah, you just lock it in at some point when it "looks right" prior to taking the series of photos. For "accurate" white balance, it's better to first point the camera at something with neutral colors, like a white wall or piece of paper, and lock it in then. If you instead fill the frame with one solid color, like red or green, it will throw off the auto white balance and that's not the ideal time to lock it.

I own the X-E4 since yesterday and I find your tutorials spot on and very helpful. Question: I guess the WB lock is not for walks through the park or the city where light source is a changing sky, right?
@PeltierPhoto
@PeltierPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I wouldn't leave the Auto White Balance "locked" while moving through changing light sources. But once I move from one light source to the next, then I might lock it as soon as I get to that new light source, and only for that time I'm in that light source.

Hi John, thanks for the tip, you say in the video that WBL is good for 'run n gun' type photography, which for me means street. If for example I am on a city street in sunny or cloudy conditions, then I wouldn't need to lock WB, but if I then go indoors to a market or museum I could lock in the WB for that particular scene, leave it locked while indoors, unlock when I go back to the street?
@PeltierPhoto
@PeltierPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
@@desoriordan9515 yeah, if you're constantly in and out of shade and sunlight, I probably wouldn't leave it locked unless you're spending some time in one of those light sources. But once you go inside where the light is constantly from the same fluorescent lights, for example, then that's a good time to lock the white balance so you get consistent colors from one picture to the next.

Hi, is this a feature that you would recommend for video too? Or mainly just for photography?
@PeltierPhoto
@PeltierPhoto Жыл бұрын
Yeah I use it for some videography also, if again the light source is constant (not going from indoors to outdoors or sunlight to shade, etc). It'll help guarantee there's no noticeable color shifting during the video if the composition changes.

Is there an option to make the camera lock the white balance as long as the shutter is half pressed and between photos if you don’t let the shutter all the way up?
@PeltierPhoto
@PeltierPhoto Жыл бұрын
It should do that as the default - at least that’s how it works on the cameras I’ve tested.

Well done, for seldom covered topic.👍 I’d prefer to toggle a button - press to lock, release to unlock - lest I forget and leave the auto white balance locked for the incorrect setting. Kinda like exposure compensation. Tip: when using a white surface to check WB, a piece of paper that is as close to 100 bright white works best.
@PeltierPhoto
@PeltierPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
I’m surprised how few photographers know this is available in their camera, let alone what it does. Thanks for the tip on the paper! And yes, I have forgotten to unlock it occasionally, but it’s a better alternative to holding the thing down all the time :)

All X100Vs have it :) Go to the second page of your Button/Dial Setting menu and you'll see AWB Lock Mode. As mentioned in the video, you can only program it to a *button*, not a touch function - you won't see it available if you're trying to assign it to a touch function.
