Getting Dressed in one of my Edwardian Era Outfits

A flashback to the Edwardian Era (and before we were social distancing!), here I am getting dressed in one of my Edwardian outfits and doing a simple Edwardian hairstyle. The hair portion starts at the 6:00 mark.

I saw that people are dressing up to take out their trash nowadays, I can't help but think how awesome it would be to see historic costumers turning up at the supermarket in full period get-ups. Nothing like a hoop skirt to enforce social distancing.

I have dressed like that in public, it is who I am, most give odd stares, but some find it interesting. This last Fall, I went to a tea luncheon for Downton Abby and dressed with a bunch of Ladies in period clothing and went to see the movie.

One of the romance novel series I read has the men always thinking 'oh yay that's real girl under there and not padding! this is EVEN BETTER!' quite regularly when our heroines trip or need helping into carriages, y'know. for plot reasons. :P (Loretta Chase is the author if you like your romance with some excellent research and costuming.)

This concept never fails to make me laugh! Imagine actually BEING in this situation. Not even getting married, just like some dude friend you have being like “wHAT!? YOU ARENT ACTUALLY SHAPED THIS WAY?” And you the rest of your lady friends have a good laugh over it because you all just KNOW

That's the old joke. On their wedding night, the bride takes off and puts away her hip pads, bust enhancer, corset and hair extensions. Her new husband looks confused and says "I don't know if I should jump into the bed ---- or the dresser draw"

Those are well constructed pieces. Edwardian women had the concept of layering down. The hat is lovely too 😁 The ladies walking at the end with you were so lovely too.

I love your train! Someday I'll have a skirt like that. As a child I would wrap myself up in sheets and pretend that I had a train behind me.

I always felt positively imperial when I walked down stairs in my houpeland (medieval gown with a full circle body, tho I did it in an ovoid to get the longer train).

Yay! It's actually one of the easier periods to start with because fitting isn't as critical for some of these more casual styles like this!

oh be careful with the bowing of the bones in that back! that can damage the corset. you want to make sure the gap is parallel even if u have to leave it a bit looser top and bottom.

I love your hat!! I love your whole outfit! I used to dress up in Victorian clothes that I sewed for myself, when I was in my late twenties, and early thirties. Now that I am 60 years old, I long for those good old days! Thanks for sharing your video! Remember to stay 6 feet away from other people, Wash your hands, and stay at home! Wow 😯 so many layers 😱 ( I wonder what would have happen Back then if the woman woke up and found out they only had 2 minutes to dress themself 🤯🙄 ) . But is is very very pretty ! Love the shoes , hey what can I say I am a shoe kind of girl ! I love that you showed all the layers . You sometimes forget how Complicated dressing up was back then . My hair was this thick one year ago...also. March of 2021 I have now got a gallon zip lock bag full...gonna stuff something with it...maybe the knitted toys I make...seems fitting. LOVED your whole outfit!

I really like the shirt, its not too lacey, not a fan of super puffy sleeves, those ones are perfect. Buttoning up the front is a must for me due to range of motion issues. The collar works because its not tight against the throat due to asthma.

Thanks for making this! It was really helpful for giving me an idea what garments I’ll need for my own ensemble. I do have one suggestion though. You should be careful to lace your corset evenly, even if that means making it a bit more loose than it can close in parts. While corsets of the time were usually laced all the way shut, it’s better for the corset to have a bit of a gap between the laces than to be in that () shape. Thank you again!

Ok that is a brilliant thing with your petticoat because I've noticed that all of my hems are going bonkers from wear. A petticoat that's long enough to take the wear! Genius. Love the video, love seeing the layers come together. It's such a simple and beautiful look and so so so effective.

The victorians used a 'balayuse' that buttoned onto their petticoats to make laundering and replacement even easier

I really like this video! I like seeing all the layers, in their proper order, to make the outfit. Guess what? I've been doing Edwardian hair all along! But I switch it up with a hair stick instead of pins at times. And I definitely need a hat like that... furry assistants I already have.

Here I am, walking around in just one petticoat and with no bum-enhancer! The shame! Unfortunately, I lost my hair due to illness. It’s back now, but has only reached an overgrown, spiky mess! I can’t figure out what to do for my Edwardian garb, aka my whole wardrobe, save for maybe buy a wig.😢

I didn't do a video on the hat - it is so simple! Just a band of fabric and some faux flowers and ribbons! Each of the other girls made their outfits. They are all so skilled!

Such a lovely ensemble! I have this Wearing History Edwardian blouse pattern printed out, and you've inspired me to finally cut into some fabric and get started. I love the blouse modifications you've made...buttons in the front are very practical, indeed. Is your collar the high neck with points version just turned down rather than buttoned up, or did you create a new collar altogether?

It is a high necked version that I just left open and turned down. It's similar to the WH pattern, but it doesn't have a pointed collar - it's just flat

I loved seeing all the petticoats! With the drawstring closure, does the drawstring go all the way around the front of the petticoat too? It seemed to be a flat front waistband. The belt really does complete the whole ensemble! Love it!

It's totally flat in the front so there isn't unnecessary bulk. The drawstring just starts at about the side back.

Your outfit is lovely and I especially love the skirt. At the end, everyone looked wonderful in their outfits. I do have a question - What do you do to protect the underside of the skirt's train and keep it from getting dirty? Thank you for sharing this.

The last petticoat I put on is longer and trained, so it is usually what is touching the ground and gets most of the dirt. But...hems just get dirty! It's the reality of this style.

I am a early Middle Ages re-enactor so I wear the basic under dress instead of petticoats, but I still love learning the fashions of other periods, as well as some very good sewing tips.
