Getting into CNCs for Money IS the Wrong Reason (FIGHT!)

Watching a video on a channel I follow (link below) the youtuber presented an argument as to why getting into CNCs and machining for money is in fact A-OK... I felt compelled to present a rebuttal to the position...
*full disclosure, I have exactly zero connection with Full Throttle CNC other than we both own CNC machines (his is much cooler!), and I am a subscriber of his channel....

I love this "philosophical" piece of CNC ! My background is system engineer (computer network / communications) and business but the concept of "from idea to objects" or "from thought to touch" is soooo appealing that I got involved with CNC milling (and turning) - just for the pleasure of making, period. This is my hobby. I know that now you run your machine ; I saw your video where you run adaptive clearing easily at 6 cubic inches of MRR - something that kill the Tormach 1100 ! Passion is key. Proof: your achievement !

Thanks.. I think you and I may have similar backgrounds Mark (20+ years in enterprise software development).. I really need to push the machine and run the math to see what it can do... I know my spindle at 5HP is stronger than the rest of the machine... trick is to find where that reasonably is..

So my background (CNC wise) is in routers... The mill is new to me and this is my hobby.. I have been very diligent in going through the commissioning process to make sure that its square, and configured properly.. There has also been a lot of shop related improvements that have been needed too... If you check out I have other videos showing the squaring process (making sure all the planes were perpendicular) you can see some of that work. I am down to one final issue I am waiting for a reply from Skyfire China to resolve, then I'll mix up a batch of coolant and get to cutting.. I'll be doing a tell all video about the full process to commission the machine, I just want to make sure all the issues are resolved and I can provide a complete and transparent experience to be as informative as possible.

Out of curiosity what forum problem are u 2 referencing.

The generic response of most occupational forums that if you say you want to do something for money, you get dogged.. not a specific problem, just something common in a lot of occupational forums... (except maybe for hedge fund managers, I bet there forums look at you funny if you didn't get into them for money :-P)... Dave's video on Full Throttle CNC puts it better... What I disagreed with was the reason of the back lash of "in it for the money".. I don't think it is as simple as market protection.. I think its because those expressing that on the forum are expressing that your "why" to get into machining should not be money, money is the result not the reason..

Ah your video made it seem like you disagreed with a lot more than that. Details aside i think the major point of his video is its ok to do something for money not that you shouldn't do what you love.

To me that was the center of his message, especially the allegory of the porta-potties guy.. And I do think he has passion and knows his why.. I just think he played up the "for the money" angle too much and both sides glossed over "why" you don't just do something for the money.. So I felt compelled to throw my views out there :-).. I am not much of a vlogger so that was me just rambling at the camera... So thanks for asking for clarification :-).

Wait until you try and use that Skyfire POS. You basically spent $14,000 on a fancy ferret cage

You may be right, I hope your wrong.. If I was making my mortgage on this machine It would have been a Haas Super MiniMill or VF1 and I would have sold my CNCRouterParts Pro4896... Luckily for me, its a hobby machine.. I am handy enough that worst case scenario it becomes overpriced castings for a home made machine... but I have a sneaking suspicion it will be a tad better than just a ferret cage..

The best a skyfire will ever run right there in this video ha. Titan is a goofball who sold out for endorsements, his passion is fame and money

It may surprise you that people are making real things on their Skyfires... But time will tell.. As for Titan, I think he took opportunities, sure, but he didn't build a jobshop to the level where those opportunities became available without something there before the fame.

Hard to take you as a beacon of light and knowledge when you were hoodwinked into buying a Skyfire, everyone knows better than that. Maybe if you got into CNC for the money you wouldnt have to check with the wife to buy an endmill , lol

Not sure everyone knew better 9 months ago (when I ordered).. At the time, Aaron, Pieter, and most of the forums were mild to positive, and there was no Tormach MX announcements or suggestion of such. (Heck I was working up making a custom PCB to convert tormach's over to Technik Clearpath servos when I was debating what machines to purchase) Wasn't till Aaron's post a few months back (5 months after I had already ordered) that the Skyfire hate turn on.. Only time and chips will tell.. A tell all will be coming, it will be transparent, and honest.. But not until all the open issues are resolved, or I know they won't be resolved by Skyfire.. And I never said I was a machining beacon of light and knowledge.. I specifically suggested my 25 years in enterprise software development and consulting is where my correlative background to this topic comes from ;-)... I am absolutely a Noob when it comes to machining. But I do know a thing or two about business... We want to debate the merits of fixture or tooling, or CAM programming, and I will sit back and listen and learn.. You want to debate motivators for success, and that is something I know a little bit about..

Whatever the machine he bought is irrelevant regarding the perceived motivations sustaining his CNC journey. Your affirmation is a sophism. Beside this, is your behavior due to frustration? YOU should check with the wife.... :)

“Maybe you’re rambling a bit.” Seriously? This whole video was rambling. Stop pontificating and get busy creating instead of talking about absolutely nothing. Talking doesn’t get it done. How can you talk about passion when you admit you’ve made nothing with your CNC? I don’t see any passion at all here. All you do is talk. Maybe that’s your passion. Talking and not doing.
