Getting more out of your smart meter display by using the phone app

I recently had a smart meter installed by Octopus and it came with a Geo Trio II display unit. After connecting this to my WiFi and downloading the Geo Home app, the display unit acts as a bridge to get your data onto the cloud, so you then have it all in the app. This is a much easier way of seeing the data and monitoring your electricity and gas usage.

Thanks for posting this. Our screen did not look as though it had the Wi-Fi module but I was still able to connect.

If i am on octopus flux, can i set up different prices for different times of days? peak and off peak prices? what about export? can you see data for export and also set their prices?

My version doesn't have the module on the back like yours,but it can connect to WiFi :)

Hi Matt - Great tip about linking your Geo display meter to your Wi-Fi !. We have the same Geo Trio II unit as yours, but there is no facility in the menu to connect to Wi-Fi. It has the little black panel in the back also ?.

@@alisesay Sounds like youve got the British Gas model, which has no wifi or a slot for a wifi modual.

just a quick note if you can get Utilita in your area with them you do not have a standing daily charge at all and at this time they are in the top three of the cheapest suppliers in the UK don't know if you would find this useful but I thought I would just mention utilia cheers again 👍

How do you pair it with your supplier? In my case, I'm with octopus energy. I can read the readings on the octopus app but not the IHD.

You don't pair it with your supplier. I'm also using Octopus. The smart meter's own app I'm using requires you to input the price you're paying for the electricity & gas.

Hi Matt/ you may recall I'm in a 3 year old new build with a smart electric unit and dumb gas! Have never been supplied a display unit despite many phone calls! " There's a world shortage ..." any excuse. Found this relevant and very helpful. Just need the kit ggrrrr!

If your meter is a SMETS1, then it can be replaced with a SMETS2 and you'll also get a smart gas meter too (and the display unit). Normally switching suppliers will allow this as often the new supplier can't read someone else's SMETS1 meter. See www.google.com/search?q=is+my+meter+smets+1+or+2

I am with Utilita and for the past few months had constant signal problems, the engineer came out and said that gas meter not communicating with electric so got no display from my gas and now waiting again to see if they can fix it their end. Got told that if you use a Wi-Fi connection you risk hackers and people switching on your power etc not sure if that's the case but if you dont have a firewall setup that could happen in theory.

I'm on pay as you go.. The problem I have, when my credit runs out I have to turn my gas meter on by the meter.. Then reset the economy boiler this is with sse... With utilita Energy I could turn the electricity & the gas on by the monitor...

Great video! If i want to connect with my phone app i don't get a SecureCode to add in the app. It keeps on loading. It has internet connection and connection with the meter. Do you have any solution?

I have a comment/question what if I purchased a 48 V one or 2 kW lithium ion battery and A large inverter to create 240 V to run my solar grid tide powered house at night during the evenings this 48 V battery could be plugged into an electric vehicle via cigarette lighter plug and charged via a small 240 V inverter hence running the house at night The 48 V battery simply supplies peak demand briefly and is slowly triple charged by the large EV traction battery of course the EV would be charged during the day from the House supplied by the Solar panels I am in New Zealand so perhaps we get more sunshine Sorry about that cheers

Hiya, just a question, I was told that smart meters are easily hacked,! Is this true and I'm thinking of getting one but I'm a bit wary about what I've read and seen online. Please help

There's so much paranoia when it comes to smart meters and anything new. Take it with a pinch of salt. Yes, maybe it could, but they would need to be very tech savvy and there's easier vulnerabilities. But then also why? What can they gain? If someone wants to know when you're house is empty, they can just watch it. Why hack a smart meter? A thief is going to carry a hammer and pry bar, not a laptop!

ps. seen a video. on charging a peugeot e- 2008 on a tesla charger. is this correct ??

If you mean the Superchargers (i.e. DC rapid chargers) then yes, Tesla have opened up 15 sites in the UK to all cars. More coming soon too. Or if at a silver Tesla destination charger (i.e. AC charger) then yes, these any vehicles can use these too, depending on how they've been configured on installation. You'll find red or white signs above them indicating if they are Tesla only or for all vehicles. Normally you'll get 50/50 or something like that.

There's an option in the menu on the display to enter the WiFi password.

Hi. I am told by my supplier that the smart meters use a different connection type and not my home WIFI why does your connect to the meter over your WIFI i am with shell energy

That's correct. None of them use WiFi to send data back to the supplier. The WiFi add-on is only so you can access it and the data locally.

I have them only because it then allows you to have a cheap rate night time tariff, to charge the EVs for a fraction of the cost. Its a no brainer!

@@GoGreenAutos yes that's why we ordered ours originally. They fitted the smartmeter, took six months before they could make it show us anything, finally got a new smartmeter fitted. All seemed ok until last week when the gas usage is registering zero again. This is actually still a fifty % improvement on before when both were zeroed out. Our WiFi connection is strong btw. We got it when it looked like we might have to change from Bulb and it would enable us to take advantage of the best possible tariff for us but when as expected the company failed the hand over has been so slow we're still in limbo and can't change. It's a nightmare .. the consolation is that because of the cock-ups with the meter change we're actually so far in credit as to have a cushion for this winters usage including the price increase! Thanks for this Matt, I know ours is definitely using WiFi, I'll have to get my wife to see if there's an app for the mobile. It might mean we can see what the company can say they can see but *we* can't on this hopeless device, you never know! 👍

This setup is just interrogating your smart meter for your consumption figures. It is not talking to your supplier. You need to go to your supplier's app or account for that information.

Only a complete fruit would get a "Smart" meter. You relinquish complete control to the middleman energy provider. Plus they will surge price as loadshedding approaches.

Our motoring costs are considerably cheaper by having a smart meter and now we also make additional savings by reducing energy usage at peak times. We also put our washing machine and dishwasher on at night too, which reduces their running costs by 136% too. Loadshedding is here and was introduced by Octopus two weeks ago. We get paid £2.25 for every kWh we reduce our usage during a selected peak rate hour (normally 5-6pm). If you change your tariff, its only a positive having a smart meter, as you can make significant savings.
