I love that you're so serious about knowing history as a teacher! I'm the same way...I'm almost finished with my B.A. in U.S. history, seriously considering a similar route as you. I'd love to get my PhD and do research, but I don't see myself wanting to teach university. I feel like the K-12 system can always use more teachers who are passionate and competent about what they teach. Especially a subject like U.S. history; it's so important.

I agree with you about teaching in K-12 settings. I have my degree in history and after many years in business decided to go that route. I love it! Best choice I ever made and because I know the content so well, the kids really appreciate that I can make history fun!

Great point about the serendipity of discovering new sources while scanning library shelves for something else. That was one of my favorite aspects of doing research during my undergrad years in the 1990s. Now I'm considering going back for a second master's in history as a late 40s person with full-time job and a teenager. Hmm, we'll see.

I have my Masters in Library Science. I just graduated in May 2016 and I'm moving into a media center from the 7th grade ELA classroom this year. It was an insane time in my life. I did everything online from Appalachian State University here in NC. I was a single mother when I started (my baby was 4 when I started) and, over the course of my two years in my Masters program, I got engaged! I also taught full-time and was completely involved in my Church. It is possible to do it all! Just gotta use those organizational and time-management skills (and a really good Erin Condren planner, lol). :)

Love hearing about how History Master's are done in the US! I got my Master's in Ireland, and it was pretty different! We didn't have to read as many books, and it was more focused on little presentations we would have to research. I studied Medieval Studies with an emphasis in History. I wrote my thesis on Hildegard von Bingen and how the 12th century impacted her view on social roles.

Thanks for sharing! This was one on the first videos that popped up when I typed in "Master's in History." I entered a Master's in History program one year ago, at 40 years old, while teaching full time Spanish and History classes at the High School I have been at for 10 years now. I have 2 kids (6th and 2nd grade) and my wife works more hours than I do, so it has been crazy. I have been watching different videos while I cook dinners or pack lunches, and they keep me sane. I initiaally was interested in Medieval Europe, especially the growing rift between the Latin West and the Greek East. The first class I took (required) was a colloquium and the topic was the Crusades (my prof is a specialist on the First Crusade.) Anyway, I was originally a Hospitality Management major (Spanish minor), and I went back to get post-bacc certification w/ a Spanish major and History minor. All this to say that I was not super well-equipped to handle being in History grad school (it had been years since I took classes regularly or even a class at all.) I had to write a critical book review as mu first assignment and it was horrible; I got a B- . I listened to the feedback and ended up getting an A- in that class, and have gotten all A's since. I am on the thesis track, and have become interested in Medieval Muslim-Christian relations. When I finish this current class, I will have 20 out of 38 credits done; the last 8 being a thesis and defense. I am fishing for ideas in the kingdom of Castile 1250-1500 (where else can you get the Spanish language, crusading, and Muslim-Christian relations?) Anyway, sorry to ramble. Your video has kind of inspired me to maybe chronicle some of my adventure on my blog (NicholasGulda.com, not a ton there as it is less than a year old and I am super busy!) I too am focusing on an area that is not my thesis adviser's specialty(Spain), and I have had a love affair w/ the Caribbean ever since I was a child (I was fortunate enough to travel there quite a bit throughout my early life.) Sorry for the length and all the best, Nick.

I'm glad that you said that you hated your education classes and had no desire to get a master's in education...I felt the exact same way. You make me feel my passion for history reigniting. My main passion has been family history / genealogy, so I got my master's in that. That wont open all the doors I want opened to me though, so I am researching going back for a history masters. I have been really concerned about spending a lot of time on stuff I am not as passionate about, but your excitement reminds me of my own love of the reading, writing, and critical thinking (even if the topics are not always one I would choose). Thanks so much for sharing your experience and enthusiasm!

I always love going into the University library, and trying to find those real old history books that no one reads, because I love the way some of those books are written I mean some of them are very poetically. And yes finding that forgotten book or that buried away article is probably the closest thing a history person could have to an areca moment.

Your video was so cool and helpful, especially where you talked about the research process at libraries and archives! I am currently an undergrad in history and wrote my thesis while studying abroad in London. I remember the fascination I felt when I touched my first letter at the archives when I started doing my research. It was so insane to be able to touch a piece of paper written a hundred years ago and I never got over the fascination of being the one unearthing history through primary sources rather than consuming it via secondary sources. One of the things I struggled with immensely was figuring out how to organize the hundreds of papers I found at different archives. When I started the writing process I was drowning with files and had no idea where to begin. For my honors thesis I'm going to borrow your idea about having them printed and bound for easier reading. That would have been so helpful for my thesis! Thank you!

Teaching and getting an MA at the same time is sooooooo challenging! I graduated with my MA in 2013, but I studied Language and Literacy. I started as a history teacher in my first year of teaching, but I graduated and entered the field in 2009 when the market crashed and there were no teaching positions. I ended up switching to Language Arts because I couldn't get a job teaching history, and I fell in love with teaching reading and writing! Here's something exciting, I legit did my thesis on Vocabulary in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone! :)

toocoolformiddleschool blog I'll have to link it for you. It's called "Teaching Morphemic Contextual Analysis" which is a fancy way of saying Latin and Greek roots and Context Clues. Lol. When I picked the name of my thesis, I didn't realize that what I put on my proposal was going to to be the actual name of my thesis. So there you have it, a weird name for a thesis! It's focused on understanding the vocabulary gap, why it develops, and offers approaches to remediate the vocabulary gap using high interest literature (Harry Potter). I think it's interesting!

I did my masters in Literacy Instruction. I really enjoyed it. It was very hands on in the sense that we read A LOT in the first 3 or 4 weeks of each class then we put our reading into practice at the University's literacy center, where kids from schools in the area would come in for different reading or writing programs. I worked with about 8 kids over 2 years and wrote Literacy Analysis Reports for each one tracking their progress over the 6-8 weeks I saw them.. My last semester was similar to yours research-wise for my final portfolio and my independent study. I had to prove that I had met the 6 standards for Literacy Instructors set by the ILA. My portfolio is 4+ inches of research and artifacts proving what I did. My independent study is two research papers. One is being published soon and the other is in the research stage currently, which my professor and the college is handling since I graduated over a year ago, but I wrote the literature review and research survey for it.

I got my M.A. In Admin. but with no intention to become an administrator. I mostly did it for the pay raise. I also learned a lot about school law and student fairness/equality in education. It made me see the other side of things as well from an admin. perspective. I got my teaching credentials and Master's after getting married and having my daughter. Some classes were online for my credentials, but ALL of my Master's classes were in person. I was part of a cohort that met once a week for 3-5 hours a class for 18 months, basically straight through with about a week off between classes. We did a lot of projects and discussions. Since this was geared to people already teaching with families we did the bulk of our actual work in class with our fellow students. Many projects or assignments we did utilized things available in our schools or classrooms, such as policies and family situations of our students. I would definitely say it would've been easier without a family, but they were also motivation to do my best, power through, and get it done. I had a 4.0 throughout my program, and I credit that to my family motivating me. Thanks for sharing your experience! ❤️ and hugs from Missouri!

Of the programs offered at the University I attended this one was the one best for classroom teachers. I know I did not want to be a principal or administrator. I got my bachelors degree in History Education in 2000 from MHU in North Carolina. When I thought about going back to school to get my masters I didn't know exactly what I wanted to focus on so I refrained for a while. Then life came about and two children later I ended about going back to school to get my masters in Special education teaching and learning ( long story and reasoning). I recently started watching for one reason you mentioned the Virgin Islands. I am from the Virgin Islands and it's very rare to here mainlanders talk about the VI. Rothschild Francis was from St. Thomas and I'm from St.Croix. For reason on known to me we never focused much on him when studying VI History. My speculation is that if I went to school in St. Thomas I would have learned more about him. However on my island we focused a lot on our civil rights leaders and the movements that occurred on St. Croix. Also one of our main focuses when studying VI History was the Organic Act and then the revised Organic Act. Thanks for sharing yours masters experience.

Oh wow, it's so amazing to hear from you! In California I rarely meet people from the Virgin Islands. That is so interesting that you learned about the Organic Acts (Francis is known as the "Father of the Organic Acts'). They were passed after he fled to New York because of a judge named George Washington Williams, but his legislation was the foundation for the acts. I'll put my thesis video up as soon as I can, and I'd love to hear your response!

Thank you for sharing. I'm a teacher in California also with BA in History (at CSUSB) and I'm considering to eventually get my MA in history. One quick question: does CSUF offer for MA students to test out (with some type of MA competency tests like they would at Cal Poly Pomona) in getting their MA in history versus doing a thesis? I agree with the student loan issue for teachers and getting credentials. My only way out that I avoided it was serving the military and using the GI Bill prior to getting my BA and the teacher's credential. I had to get a second credential for the requirements of the specific teaching job that I had, but I was able to save up and pay for it while teaching full time. It was definitely a challenge.

Hi I finished my masters degree in December 2016 and I got my Masters of Education in School Counseling and have been a school counselor for the last three months after 8 years of being ELA teacher. I am currently in school again obtaining my Ed. S. (educational specialist degree) in Educational Leadership, this will definitely be my last degree, at least for a while lol! This is going to be rough two years lol! Thanks for your videos!

Hi! I know this comment is old but I thought I'd try lol. When you get your masters in counseling do you start your counseling career right away or can you stay in teaching but get the masters pay on the salary schedule until you're ready to be a counselor full time. And when you move on to be a counselor do you start over on the salary schedule or do you start off on how many years you've been at the district. Thank you!

Marlene Garcia hey! Great questions! After obtaining my masters degree I finished the school year as a teacher ( roughly six months) but did begin receiving my masters pay right away. Additionally, once I became a school counselor I kept my years of experience from when I was a teacher and continued on the payscale as normal. I hope this answered your question, please feel to ask if you need clarification on anything!

Hey! so I just started my Masters in Latin American studies which combines history of Latin America and Cultural aspects of this particular section of the world. I also started teaching full time at a private High School, I teach Spanish and Psychology. I was just wondering, I have started Part time at a University near by, and I thought about switching to full time just so that I can finish faster, however, just planning along takes a lot of my time, I just wanted to know your thoughts on teaching full time and going to school full time?

Sorry in advance for how long this comment is about to be! I am a social studies teacher, too! I've taught american history, government, sociology, and psychology. I am just about to finish my Masters in Education. I was originally supposed to have a concentration in American Studies (History & English electives) which I was super excited about. After taking a history course (which was exactly as you described -- read a book, round-table discussion each week) they eliminated the concentration! Long story short they were able to honor the history course towards my Education degree... thank goodness because it was SO much reading and writing, but then it meant no more history courses for me :( ! I'm watching this video because even though I'm about to be finished (and a bit tired of schoolwork over the summer) I've always wanted to get a Masters in history. This is why I thought that concentration was a perfect mix of what I'm interested most in... Anyway, I was just curious how your experience was in picking a topic? I'm sure it's done differently at each college, but I am interested in so much that I'm not sure how I could possibly narrow it down. Did you have guidance in selecting a topic that would have substantial resources/hadn't been done before? Or was it more like, what do you want to write about?

maggiemay523 Hey! Fellow history teacher! I didn't have any guidance on choosing my topic, but in EVERY class we refined our research and thesis and arguments. I think I wrote 5 papers about the Virgin Islands before I started my thesis, so I had a good stash of resources!

Thanks! That makes sense...hmmm! I definitely miss my history -- next year I'll be teaching all psychology, which is also a very important course... but I share your passion for history & agree that it just makes you a better student (and, well, person)! We need more history teachers in the world who can share this enthusiasm with students and show them that it is NOT BORING! I will definitely spend some time thinking about what I'm most interested in this school year, maybe read a few books for fun to find a topic that stands out to me before I plunge back into school. P.S. - I love your videos!

Hey Maggie!!! I am a social studies major too! Im also working towards getting a minor in history and american studies. I was wondering if you could tell me what the role of a social studies teacher is like? I know that we are technically qualified to teach history, political science, psychology, current events, etc. So do they typically have you moving around from subject to subject? Or do they primarily place you in one are? Thanks!!!

Hi Megan! I'd love your advice on something. I'm an active duty military member with a bachelors degree in PoliSci. I was planning on pursuing a masters in international relations. But I've found that history (world, military, and exploration history in particular) is my true passion. I'm thinking of pursuing a masters in history so that I can hone my writing, critical thinking, and research skills. I'm an intel analyst. So those skills are very important. I plan on maintaining a job within the intel community. Will a history masters help polish me in this regard? I agree with you that you should pursue what you're passionate about. And while I love PoliSci and IR, they're not really my passion. My passion is reading and analyzing the Battle of Stalingrad, or Captain Cook's voyage or Mayan astronomy, etc. Thank you so much for this video. It helped a lot. I welcome any additional advice you may have. P.S. I didn't know anything about Rothchilds Francis. I will look him up. :)

I have no formal qualifications in history. History is critical in that it exposes how situations occurred in the past and may give a good indication what to avoid to prevent similar situations in the future. My take on the Tsar's daughters who were imprisoned and brutally murdered by the Bolsheviks at Yekaterinburg was how could they be rescued? I thought on infiltration by armed "nuns" whilst platoon sized support groups outside would engage and neutralise the guards within 1 km (I think there were about 400 of them) and then begin the extraction process. My preferred rescue would be aerial extraction before they became prisoners, flying between fuel dumps, so as to exit Russia, possibly to Norway or Sweden. Most historical accounts don't even consider the rescue of these innocent young ladies.

I'm going into my third year of teaching at a k-8 school where our placements change almost yearly. I've taught two different grades so far. I was thinking that getting a masters could help me further identify my passion- would you agree or do you feel that you need to know your passion before getting your masters? Right now I am most passionate about teaching students writing but am also excited to hopefully finally get to teach 6th grade history this coming year.

In October, I will complete my Master of Education degree in Elementary Education! 😀 In the beginning, I knew it would be a different experience from undergrad, but oh man, it was tough at times. I had to learn how to effectively research pedagogy, education theorists, use effective instructional strategies in the classroom, lesson planning, and so on. I thought I would regret the decision of starting my M.Ed before becoming a teacher, but I do not regret my decision at all, and I am grateful for my experience! 😀

i got my masters in media psychology! this is before i knew i wanted to be a teacher, but i had a bachelors in psych, and looove psychology. i thought i would go into the corporate world with my educational history, but ended up disliking it. anyway! i got to delve into social media, marketing, political messaging, storytelling, etc... all through a psychology lens. i did my final capstone on gender roles in children's advertising, which was so fascinating. it was such a great experience and although my life has taken a different path, i don't regret it for a minute.
