Getting perfect shutter speed for video on the Nikon Z8 with this setting

As a wildlife photographer that also shoots video switching seamlessly between photo and video mode is key to my success. This hidden setting on the Nikon Z8 can help you get perfect shutter speeds in your videos automatically. We will discuss the importance of shutter angle and how it applies to video and then show you how to set it and forget for each of your shooting banks.

I am having trouble setting it up though. Getting this message when I try to turn shutter lock on “This option is not available at current settings or in the camera's current state” any ideas what I’m doing wrong? Any help kindly appreciated

Yes the dreaded M mode, it has definitely taken some getting used to, having been an Aperture priority shooter for the last 20 years. But 8 months in and have switched everything over to Manual except for my Real Estate Photography, I still prefer aperture priority there.

This was extremely helpful, especially the g3 setting. One thing that might help others: go to your desired Shooting bank and set it (24, or 5x24 or whatever), then set your shutter speed (while in video mode), then go to g3 and lock shutter speed. Then repeat for your next Shooting bank, BUT, don't forget to unlock g3 before setting you desired shutter speed, then lock it again, especially if you are using the same Custom bank with different Shooting banks. Now when you toggle from Photo mode to video, it will revert back to the desired shutter speed as described here. I know this repeats some of the video, but I was confused by how to set the shutter speed before locking it (I was setting it while in photo mode), and I couldn't set it on another bank after I had already locked it. So hope these tips help others.

In M mode shatter speed do not auto change only manually so why you need to lock it in menu?

Hi there , this does not work for me . Only way it works on slow motion for me is to set video file type H.264 8bit (MP4) and then select frame size / frame rate to 1920 x 1080 ; 30p x4 Can you please advise how do you do slow motion. Thanks

HI, yeah all of the slow motion is done on the software side of things if you record in 60 or 120fps you can then slow it down to 24 or 30fps before placing it on your timeline in Davinci Resolve or Premiere. This allows you to record in H265 or N-raw for 60/120fps or Prores for 60fps. There are a few steps in order to make this happen and I will be covering it in a future video. Cheers

That's a tough one to answer, for 120fps I use the h265 10 bit to get the 2.3X crop so that one is easy. For my 30fps i had decided on the Prores 10bit for the Hi Res Zoom option but I am finding the AF very hit and miss with it for where I had intended to use it, birds in the forest but it is a great feature otherwise. So the decision is based more on what options you want to use with it and what are available with each codec as much as file size and editability. They all produce amazing files in normal conditions with the 12bit better under more difficult lighting. For me the 10bit prores makes sense for file size, and editability at this time, until I get the Davinci Resolve Studio and another 50 Tb of storage to start playing with 8K

Hi David, it appears from the Z9 manual to be G3 as well so it should work. i don't have a Z9 to test so not 100% sure

amazing!! thank you. i never checked this one! i was just anoied. ok i am still are, cause switching from photo to video mode should never involving the MODE settings switch aswell. I like to shoot photo in A MODE aswell, but having this in Video just suxxs.

You may be in aperture priority mode instead of manual mode. That happened to me last night

Very helpful video. I have setup my shooting bank A just like you did in my new Z8 . I am still learning a lot atleast for the video part. When is your video on other banks coming up? Also just a dumb question probably...in Bank A for 120fps shooting indoor i see flicker. Is it only a problem under led lights and won't be a issue outdoor? Another question.. I am shooting videos in the same settings as you are..N log , 4K 120 . Everything is perfect but whenever recording is done and i try to playback the same in camera it hardly shows only 4-5 second of playback and stops. Am i doing something wrong or something wrong with my camera?

Thanks, my shooting Bank B video should be up next, I have been out shooting a bunch lately and found it needed some tweaks from how I had set it up originally, but I think I have it pretty dialed in now. Yes the flicker should only be indoors, the camera does have a number of options for reducing flicker indoors both on the photo and video side. Are you recording to a Cf express card or SD card. If its SD, that is probably the problem with the recording being cut off early. Are you seeing it recording the full video or is it stopping early and is it just playback on the camera that stops or also on the computer

There is no problem with the recording.. it's perfect.. only problem is when I am trying to play this in camera. Only first 4-5 second is playing. The playback is ok in my mac. Issue is only when playing in camera

@@90sayan I just checked and mine does the same thing. Only a few video formats can actually record to the sd card at all on the Z8 . Its not that the card is faulty just that its too slow, it may be buffering on playback. The CF Express card should fix that. Which one did you order?

I have ordered the prograde gold 512 GB gen 4.0 card ..here in India the availability is little less for the new card so it is taking time . Should receive by next week. Already got the gen 4.0 cardreader from prograde 👍🏻

@@90sayan Great choice that's the card I use. Cost per performance is excellent. i had originally bought the Gen 3 and it was quite slow so returned for the Gen 4 and been really happy with it.

I set up my shooting bank and lock at 60p for Bank A. When I go to lock bank B at 125p, it stays locked on 60p. What the heck am I missing here?

Good question, most likely you have Bank B in aperture priority instead of manual try that if not let me know I have another work around that may work

I figured it out! I had to turn ON “Extended Menu Banks” under Video Recording Menu for the cam to remember shutter speed changes. My brain hurts. Thanks for your video and the reply. I get so lost in the menus but it’s making more sense now.

@@mudraw3 Oh what a pain, nothing worse than things being greyed out or missing from the menu. The work around is set one of the custom fn buttons to LOCK (control lock) which allows you to lock setting without having to menu dive. HI: Greetings from the sunny Okanagan again. Been setting up my shooting banks and came across something that may help me with sorting in post. After naming them somewhat like you suggested - I then when thru and set up the names for each 'Storage Folder' that each bank uses and the prefix for each file naming the same. If I have shot in all 4 modes then I have 4 folders to download and the images in each folder begin with a name associated to the folder. EG: Bank 'A' is my General/ Colour - Storage folder is number 101 - name is AZA_1 so - the folder is downloaded as 101AZA_1. File naming is AZA - image #899 shot using bank A would be named _AZA0899 (I shoot in Adobe Colour Space) Once I get everything dialed in and ready to save I plan on using an old small SD card to keep the baseline on so that I can always get back to my baseline settings. Hey Bruce, I see where you are going with it and could see it being useful for sure. I have in the past used different import settings in Lightroom based on ISO, so different edit settings were applied. It worked great for that generation of software but what I found was as the software evolved those setting all changed (adobe or topaz denoise etc) and with new cameras a lot of things are constantly changing. And i find now if I need an image I will almost always re-edit it anyway. I keep everything pretty simple now with just a name change on import name_date_cameraprefix ie.Clarke_240812_8435 This way all files will line up in order in lightroom by name. It is a great idea to use an sd card to save your baseline. I do find that my baseline tends to evolve over time so make sure to keep it updated as well. Cheers
