Getting rid of all my "normal" clothes... or not?!

2022 is the year where I'm going to bite the bullet and get rid of all my non-kimono clothes. I wear kimono (almost) every day and I don't need 2 wardrobes, since I have a kimono that is prefect for every occasion, one can think of. Anyway, clothes are very important to me and most pieces in my closet are more than 7 years old. So, I probably can't say goodbye to as many clothes as I had intended to.
Thank you so much for watching!!

I think the goal of closet purges shouldn't be get rid of as much clothes as possible, but really think through every piece and keep only loved and useful pieces, no "maybe" od "I shall wear this some day" or "I will lose / gain weight / change my shape one day and wear it". You handled the closet sort-out very well :) It reminded me of the Netflix show with Marie Kondo, where she teaches people how to be thankful for things they have and even when they get rid of them, they thank them for their service and let them go to another home.

I love how your German accent comes through when you get excited 😀😀

That's a reason why watching your videos always takes me back to my days studying linguistics at uni. It's normal for certain characteristics of a person's first language to increase as they get excited. Having analysed German speakers of English for a very long time it's really fascinating to hear some influences of Japanese here as well. It's such a charming trait, and especially with your passion for clothes being audible (be it ever so subtle with some idiosyncrasies) on so many levels it makes for a wholesome viewing experience. Thank you for brightening up so many of my weekends and for engaging my brain in so many ways.

I just have to say that the strapless flower dress that you are "wearing one last time.' is SUPER cute and makes me think of what you would have looked like as a teenager! Also you and I have very similar taste in modern "western" clothes, I have some very similar pieces in my closet for when I don't want to bother with historical clothes or kimono, or when I want to history bound instead of wearing full on historical outfits.

Your style is something so similar to mine 😂 I absolutely love that blue circle skirt, that was adorable.

This video was really helpful, because I've been meaning to do a closet purge before I move! I developed into my style a lot in the past two years, and there's so much I own that I never wear now. It was reassuring to see you go through and keep so much, and go through the PROCESS of what to keep as well. It helped me think about the purpose each item has in my wardrobe. Do I actually wear this? Does it make me happy? Some categories I barely let go of anything, and in others I'm giving up mountains of stuff. I think you should focus less on the amount you kept, and more on the amount you're giving up! You gave yourself a really hard goal, and to my perspective you took a big step in bringing your style closer to your ideal.

Thank you for this video. 💝 I'm in a quite similar position right now. I do wear traditional german or austrian clothing or at least cottagecore /Landhausstil kind of every day. And I am considering to get rid of a lot of my modern clothing. But it is so hard to let go! Btw. I looove the light blue skirt you are wearing, it suits you so well! 💙

Seeing you in Western clothing is so bizarre to me! You are so beautiful. I love seeing you declutter items that don't suit your lifestyle any longer, but it sounds like it's time to upgrade some of those items you're keeping because you need them for what they are, like that jacket that makes you sweat! Life's too short to be uncomfortable in clothing :)

This was a fun insight! I think I would best describe your style as "happy rainbow"! 🌈❤ 59 pieces, including home-wear is definitely reasonable!

Hey Billy, I admire you for rescuing all the vintage clothes and giving them a second life. I try to be sustainable and waste free for a couple of years now. What I have discovered with clothes is that if you do not wear it over a year, they need to go. What is new or dear but is not worn by me, can be given away to a sister or friend (usually the sister waiting in the corner for a chance anyway :)) What is torn or deformed but comfortable can be mended and used as homewear. I had many Abercrombie hoodies, t-shirts, v-necks they are from early 2000s which were the coolest things back then and now I can't be seen outside wearing but they can still be worn at home :) Why throw them? I find repurposing my garments are important in my journey too. Getting rid of your mass produced retail brand clothes and buying conscious brands are more harmful to the environment. If they do not find a new owner, they will just end up creating waste. So we need to buy less, be aware of where to buy them and not support the ideal of the more the merrier.

I think your style is different with each role. You have a business translation wardrobe, an at home leisure wardrobe and non kimono life wardrobe. This is normal. I had the same thing when I was working, I kept them mostly separate and different. They each projected a different image.

I have a German military parka like yours! I usually wear it without the teddy bear lining, winters here seldom go under 5°C.

😂😂😂 I understand exactly your feeling, I wear kimono almost every day, and it’s already almost 6 years I haven’t bought any western clothes, maybe just 2 or 3 Summer dress😅, that’s all, I almost get rid of normal clothes. I love your video!

Maybe you can dye the short cropped cream colored jacket that you like the style of to the peachy orangish color of the polyester one that you love the color but not how hot the polyester is... just an idea I had.

I think you did great! I find it really hard to get rid of things, especially if they have sentimental meaning... but I need to have a closet purge too, so thank you for the inspiration!

Closet purges can be so hard. I plan to go through mine when I transfer my shorter skirts into a dresser. I need the room to hang my long skirts. I need to make a decision about the last of my pants. I haven't worn pants in years. I love palazzo pants, but I just don't wear them any more. I used to wear them to outdoor events, and family gatherings, but last time we had either of those things, I just wore my regular dresses. Good video.

I love most of the clothes you kept, I think they really suit you! I can feel you. It's so difficult to get rid of clothes 😅 I make twice a year clothing purge, I'm trying to own less clothes but I choose more confortable, sustainable, quality and fitting clothes now. Getting rid of some kimono stuffs is even more difficult 😅 that's what I'm trying to do recently...

The colour of the White Day jacket is a perfect peachy colour in season! I like elements of your wardrobe, such as collared shirts that are embroidered. I can tell you know your body type and colours that you like very well, outside of kimono. Wear the short skirt! I used to have a heavy fabric like your hawaiian shirt that an entire bedding set, inc pillowcases, was made of maybe... 30 years ago. But it was SO warm in Florida. I still love the striking colour palette of black and green with coral. I'd love to see more of that combination in kimono! Maybe change the crop top to have a sewn-in more fitting tank in a colour you love, like a darker grey, olive green, or something with a lacey feeling? They're quite easy to stitch in! I have two wardrobes: my giant kimono collection, large enough for not being in Japan, and a western clothes that I wear most often. I'm torn since wearing kimono is getting harder... but I worked so hard on every outfit, every piece. I also need to get rid of my clothes. I have so, so many, but it's complicated. Like memory, hanging onto a time when I could wear normal clothes without the disability getting in my way. Otherwise, I might wear a dress one time a year- but there are also options twenty minutes away to just RENT clothing! I know this, I KNOW this! But my favourite styles, I can see what I liked... and I can't let go.

I loved this. Some items might go later when the right ones come along, having put it out into the universe I am sure you will find them. I too only buy second hand and am careful to buy cotton or wool or linen or natural rayon, we are lucky we both can sew. Oh you have to show your Dirndl, wish I still had mine, they got lost in one of the many overseas moves between Europe and the US along with my real Loden coat, sigh. I actually haven't changed in size much, wonder if they would fit still, nice dreams... Your style is unique and looks lovely on you. I name it Billy style. I actually did this two years in a row, like you I have some real winter clothes I will have to keep as two of my daughters live in snowy SD. Normally I just layer, hand knit socks and such. I actually have started converting my hand knit socks to all have tabi toes as I have better balance and less cold feet then.

You still have more clothes than I do, I'm sure :D I also have some clothes that I don't wear but don't want to get rid of for emotional reasons. I don't leave those in my closet but store them seperately so they don't take up space in my closet.

I think you moved on from a quite cutesy, girly style to more comfortable mature clothing, which brightens your skin and mood. ☺️ And I know your struggle, I am keeping a pink polyester jacket althoug it's to short and sweaty ... But I love it so much 🤣

Mach weiter so!

You are so brave to tackle such a overwhelming task😅 I really love your style in "normy" clothes. I am a fan of layering so I can wear my favourite clothes all year round 😃 I have undertook a closet purge a few months ago but my wardrobe is still overflowing . Except utility wear I haven't bought new things for years😫 And I must confess that the majority of my 80's and 90's clothes are now in my daughter's closet. She enjoy wearing them at university😁 thank you for sharing this adventure 🥰🥰🥰

You are aging out of some of the cutesy young styles. We all go thru this as we get older, and as fashions change. Also, as you age your body shape matures and dictates different clothing that fits differently.
