I have moved to Sweden from America and am now adjusting to my new life. Currently I am studying Swedish and the University in Lund. My new home is in the city of Helsingborg.

Great video with amazing views of Skåne. My tip for the pronunciation is, listen to Swedish podcasts. Just choose anyone that you like and listen a lot. Just by hearing a lot of Swedish will make the "tonfall" come automatically. And by the way, very welcome to Sweden!

Welcome! A trick in being able to "sing" the language: relax your jaw! Foreigners often sound tense when they speak swedish, to avoid this relax your jaw muscles, and don't be afraid yo over do it. Then listen and repeat the words! Good luck, with jobs and everything! We need nurses like you!

Glad you're enjoying your new life in Sweden! It's my dream to one day be able to move and perhaps immigrate to Sweden, hopefully soon. I've been living in Mexico for the last year, but am currently living in Tbilisi, Georgia 🇬🇪, so I'm inching my way over there hehe. I've been studying the language for a little while now and it's definitely been my favorite language I've ever studied. I do recommend getting as much input as possible, listening to Swedish KZfaqrs, watching the news, listening to music, reading, ect. You'll get used to the pitch accents and start to internally recognize how words are supposed to sound. When I first started studying Swedish, I was worried about this as well, but it's gotten to the point where I'll naturally start to add the pitch to correct words in a sentence, even though I hadn't previously learned the word before. It gets more natural the more immersed you are. Sounds like you're already doing a great job though! 😀 I look forward to checking out more of your videos! Keep up the great work!

A bit late but if someone looks in the comments for advice with learning languages: I've been told that watching childrens tv-shows like Spongebob in Swedish helps a lot since they speak slower and you can usually find them in both languages to compare what they are saying

Yeah, I like your idea with short videos. There's this brit living in Sweden who has the youtube channel "Being swenglish". He's really perfected the short video format. Like 3 minute videos without any music or anything. I would say you shouldn't focus too much on the pitch accent of your Swedish. It will come in time the more you learn :) Keep it up!

Always interesting to see and hear about the differences and similarities to other cultures and countries. If you want, you can check out another American Vlogger called Stefan Thyron from Seattle who has become very well known here on YT. He has a loads of very interesting Vlogs about Usa vs Sweden difficulties, similarities, how to tackle situations in Sweden, every day life here as well as the language . Stefan has been in Sweden for for 4 years now and he has documented HIS journey from day 1. I think you will like that Vlogger and also learn alot. OBS! If you are checking his Vlogs out. Start from 4 years ago....

As a Swede (not currently living in Sweden), I'd like to say welcome aswell! Don't stress too much about the accent, language is about communication and creating bonds and you can do that with or without an accent. If you haven't already started experience some culture shock just be aware that period will come. Every person that moves to another country goes through the initial "Honeymoon" phase that turns into the "culture shock" phase and eventually you will end up in the "acceptance" phase. Just a friendly warning from another expat that lived for extended time in different countries:)
@becurious20002 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice and the warm welcome. I think the biggest shock has been the process of paying for things with my American card in a cashless society, especially as I just found that all my cards require a signature from me and a law was just passed in the EU (I just found out today when I made a purchase) that you can no longer sign. I have a PIN number for all my cards but for some reason my American cards still want me to sign. I think I may do a quick video about it.

People who say you live in Denmark don't know what they are talking about and sadly don't know their own history. Skåne has been part of Sweden since the middle of the 17th Century, longer than most countries today have existed, the accent of people in Skåne is very far from the standard danish of today and is often harder for danes to understand than standard Swedish. Enjoy both countries though!

Maybe if there were signs in other languages than Swedish it would help some people to not misinterpret… 🙄 People seem to commonly mix up the “Papper” (cardboard, boxes) and “Tidningar” (regular paper, newspaper, etc.). And, something I learned recently: receipts and envelopes should be thrown in the regular trash, not in “Tidningar”. 😊

If you have only heard about the many good things about Sweden, my advice is "become aware of the negative aspects and be extra careful in certain places" because there are now many gangs and shootings in the used to be safe and peaceful country. Find out which areas are dangerous so you can avoid them, especially if you are new in the country and not aware of the gangs and shootings! Good luck!
