Will checkout those brushes. I’ve been eyeing a Castadana needle point brush for sometime. Ithink he only sells it on his site. Loved your painting, but also the assessment of the brushes. Saving your video under product wishlist.

Teacher Sandy! Silver Black brushes are a combination of squirrel hair and synthetic! Please add that correction for our vegan and cruelty free friends! I was educated that "Natural Hair" brushes mean they DO kill the animal to make the brush. It's good to know so painters can decide what is best for them based on what is important to them. Thank you so much. 🐦

Yes you are right. I would not list Silver Black brushes as synthetic because are a synthetic & natural squirrel hair combined. That is why they hold so much water and are still durable.

Thanks for sharing. I have the Silver Black brushes and they are a blend of real natural squirrel hair and synthetic hair. That is why they release slower, hold so much water and are still durable. They are very different than the 100% synthetic brushes that release water and pigment the fastest. I have the Winser & Newton series 7 brushes also but my largest is a 7. My favorite brush is the Winser & Newton Artist Watercolour sable. I 1st bought a full set of DaVinci "Maestro" Kolinsky series 11. I really am not as fond of them and they cost me a fortune. I wish I had not bought them because I find I use my Princeton 4050 synthetic sable rounds the most. Oh what a foolish purchase I made with those DaVinci brushes! I tried selling them on ebay but none sold even though they are unused.

Hi Sandy, Thank you for this video. The Rotmarder is indeed a ferretlike animal in the mink family. rot means red, because there is a different type,that is more brown. I suppose, the red one is rarer, so they want us to assume, that these bristles are better.
@SandyAllnock1
@SandyAllnock1 4 жыл бұрын
If they’re trying to convince us these are better, they’re going about it the wrong way. 😂Making these brushes so cheap does not seem at all like they are rare animals....?

Hi Sandy. Excellent video. Rotmarder is the German word for the animal. And I think a Kolinsky is kind of a subspecies of them which lives in Russia. Would make sense, since the Ussuri is a river in Russia. So it is natural hair. But I always thought the silver brushes are a blend of synthetic and natural hair. This is why I always avoided them. Are they 100% synthetic? Thanks a lot. Love your videos.

I have a really big watercontrol issue. If you are like me the real hair brush might be a bit much for you; in that case a beginner is better of spending more on cotton paper that you can evenly spray rather then expensive paint and brushes; for me i use either paul rubens paper,hahnemuhle or strathmore,the latter being not 100% cotton but being from the 400 series is fine to work with. My usual go to brushes are the royal and langnickel majestics or the softgrips. The davinci jr I use for gouache as they are a bit more stiff. all those brushes are available for under 25 euro per set.

Easy question: I need a Da Vinci brush suggestion, for sketching illustrations on A5 and A4 paper (so small and medium size paper). It has to be the best in terms of accuracy. Usually I use a pencil to create an animal or an object, that then I paint with watercolors. I don't do loose work, I do illustrations, that look very clean, sharp and accurate. I was using colored pencils and other mediums, it's only 3 months that I've jumped to watercolors and fall in love!!! Please, I really need some experience on this, either on size, or specific brush series, if possible. Thanks in advance

I’d recommend looking at DaVinci Maestro Kolinsky in probably round 2, 0. They’re not hugely expensive since they’re tiny ones. Let me know how they work out if you try one!

I work quite small so I only have small, mostly, synthetic brushes (00 to 2).. and one rot marter.. which is my favorite because it holds it shape better.. but seeing these I need to look into getting maybe one 'bigger' natural hair brush.. I think it would help me.. but the price is holding me back..
@SandyAllnock1

Price is definitely a problem! But, painting loose(which I love) means I need big brushes. One teacher told me to always choose a brush one or two sizes bigger than I think I need-best advice I got.

@@SandyAllnock1 thanks for your advice. I have found the casaneo brushes at my local art store (the silver ones are hard to find) and I bought a few sizes bigger then normal. Can't wait to try them out.

Good Video I'm worried that the plastic waste I make will somehow get into the environment and cause damage, if it degrades slowly the trapped artificial harmful substances will also get into the environment and plastic need a lot of energy to fabricate it. That's why I try to take good care of my brushes and don't treat them roughly.
@SandyAllnock1

I find my good brushes last for years, where the cheaper synthetic ones don’t. I think as with everything, quality items are good for the environment since they don’t need to be replaced every year or two...
@askialuna7717

@@SandyAllnock1 Mine also last a very long time because I treat them well, i.e. don't leave them standing in the water glass, don't handle them roughly and wash them out with simple solid soap from time to time. What bothers me is that brush sets are mostly packed in plastic and are a bit cheaper than buying the brushes individually. What is worse is the plastic film that is around the watercolour boxes and paper blocks, I cannot use it again. the packaging of the brushes, e.g. as a brush protection on the go. I still have some cheaper synthetic brushes from a one euro store that I bought years ago when I wasn't thinking too much and I still like to use them. Watercolour is just pretty gentle on brushes compared to impasto paints, soft, cheap synthetic brushes really don't survive there for long, mostly only 4-5 smaller paintings, and then they are frayed and no longer have tension. Really no 4 € larger brush set from the 1 € shop which only lasts a few pictures, But rather medium-priced synthetic brushes that are around 10-20 € for a set with 6 important brush types and sizes, then last much longer and if they are already a year old a lot of money was saved compared to the cheap set which often has to be bought new pro year if you want to continue painting. Either synthetic hair made of plastic or natural hair from animals, both have different advantages and disadvantages. All that remains is to treat my brushes well so that they last a long time. I try to buy at least a brush with a wooden handle so that it is at least a little less plastic. The most important thing is that when I go shopping I buy less food wrapped in plastic, that's where it adds up the most. I always see it as a budget a little plastic waste is okay per month, i.e. a 1L jar full of which I can choose whether it is filled with food packaging and or from my hobbies packaging material or, empty tubes or worn brushes.

"Rot" is Red in german. And Mader is the animal. So rotmader is the animal with red furr. German can put together all the words they want and its still a word.

Lol! So these are some kind of “super-cheap-red-animal-hair” brushes? 😂 Never seen natural brushes this inexpensive...but then they behave like the synthetics--I’m all confused. Not unusual! 🤣
