A look at the VHS Audio Degradation Suite effect in Reaktor 6 and a walkthrough some of the functions and how to create that retro VHS 80's sound.
Written by James Peck, this wonderful effect / plugin is free and gives you an enormous amount of flexibility to destroy your audio exactly as much as you want.
Controls include drive, compression, filters, warp, wow, flutter and overall wear of the tape.
It's a really fun plugin to tryout and incredibly useful if you're after that old sound from poor quality VHS tapes.

That synth, it sounds like intro background music for an industrial safety training tape. Like you just got a job at a automobile plant, and gotta watch these safety videos on VHS. I can picture the robotic crane arms going back and forth moving car frames, unpainted metal, etc. Or, I imagine the beginning of an 80s TV show, an 80s Corvette slowly driving up to a Stop sign

Dude this plugin is so awesome. For some reason I was thinking about the way old VHS tapes had a certain 'warble' to their audio and wanted to add that effect to a guitar, or at least learn how to attempt to reverse engineer the effect. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I was able to find this. Thanks for taking the time to share!

its not because we wanna make it bad, people are trying to recreate a moment like the sounds of the 70's

Those people developed technology, to make the sound CLEAN and we throw VSTs like these on the final mix... Engineers must be cringing with every vst release that downgrades the sound.
@phenomena17
@phenomena17 3 жыл бұрын
@@zxbryc Bro, its not for final mixdowns, but rather more for creative purposes. A good example is adding a Tape Stop effect in trap beats and most of these kids that make these modern beats dont even know what a tape machine looks or feels like. So if u want to achieve "vintage sounding mixes" like the old days its common sense to add vintage effects. People dont use it with intentions of destroying the audio... just like if I want my voice to sound like I'm in an empty cathedral hall.. then I would add a big hall reverb effect. I hope this makes sense.

@@phenomena17 That was not the point. Everyone likes "warm" sound :). My point was that every technology step was towards "better, cleaner, perfect" and now that we have the tech to produce ultra--clean stuff, people throw VSTs to make it un-clean again :)). Ironic, I find it. That was the point.

Honestly, with that degree of squash and highs being cut, it sounds more like 80's: backing music for voiceover, mall muzak, or hold music, but in stereo.. VHS did and could muffle and warp a bit, but TV speakers emphasized mids and highs more, and audio was mixed/mastered with more high end then (vinyl/tape legacy). Watch some 80's commercial compilations (which were of course recorded on VHS) to hear what I mean, a lot going on in the 900-4k Hz range.

I have never understood why people think a generic intro dropped on the start of every video is a good idea. I have always found it to be a complete waste of time. Edit: Okay admittedly you did add the video title to it. Still, I can read the title fine underneath the video player and I knew what it was before I clicked anyway

Yep. You're right. No need at all but, for me at least, putting it all together with an intro and outro is part of the fun of making it my own work and style. It's also a vehicle to add extra info if I need to.

Why bother and add so much unnatural effects, when you can go to the local flee market, buy an old deck, record your music on REAL tape, then output it back in your DAW - YOU will LOVE the final result and will have FUN making music, again. Wondering why you yourself do not appreciate your tracks? It is because you know you faking it...
