Getting unhinged which is better rebuild or replace? 1968 Firebird door hinge repair.

1968 Firebird Restoration project the great pumpkin, door hinges are a wear item so what’s the best solution? Rebuild or replace? The replacement prices have come way down but are they any good? We bought a set to find that very answer. These hinges are replacements for 1968 and 1969 Firebirds and Camaros. Take your pick.

I had my struggles With the factory exhaust, I almost think it was more time consuming then the dual 3” i put on both of my 1969 birds.

If it’s one thing that positively hate about these oldies is the doors. You made that look so easy! Good Job, Jon. On the last 67 I built, I replaced the driver side upper with a repop and rebuilt the others. I was afraid the repops were going to fight me.

I wasn’t sure about the repops at all, I figured perfect time to test them and share that results. Very happy with them and the timr saved for other parts parts of the project now.

I think the overall quality of reproduction parts are getting a little better, seeing as the NOS market is nearly dried up and anything left, you practically have to sell your first born to afford. I remember looking for a set of fenders for a 67 Camaro, and Heartbeat City wanted $750 per fender. I about had a heart attack! This was 20 years ago, mind you! In retro, I probably should have bought them because the amount of time it took to massage a set of Golden Legion fenders to fit properly took way more of my time. Now, one thing to point out is, NOS stuff, primarily body panels do not fit just as the original. A certain percentage of NOS body panels sold by dealerships were parts that did not meet specification or quality control at the plant. Which meant that you were going to have to invest a lot of time making them fit as well.

Nice! Something aftermarket works. I put Gardner exhaust on my 68, love it. Not cheap but does what they say. Bolts right in with no cutting or tweaking.

I'm sure glad I came across your channel; I love seeing Pontiacs getting rebuilt! I had a 1971 Pontiac Lemans Sport in Highschool, I sure miss it. I have been looking for one to restore/tinker with but can't find anything at a decent price. Keep up the good work!

Great work and info. You make adjusting a door look easy. I chose to get repop hinges too. I didnt feel like messing with my hinges. keep up the great work.

I normally have always rebuilt them, this was an experiment that went well to my surprise. Plan to do the same in the future

i used a set of new classic industries hinges on my 69 but had to shim the top hinge to get the door open with out hitting the fender but that being said i now hear that 68 and 69 top hinge may be different and that would make sense but im not sure of that

68 and 69 have different part numbers from the factory. This hinge kit says either one, part of the reason for a video. I know they work on 68 now I am thinking about testing them on a 1969 to see what happens

Great info. I rebuilt my '67's hinges, which is probably even more work than the 68/69's. In another unrelated topic, what kind of heater is that in the corner by your overhear door? Our current weather is not in my wheelhouse for hanging out in the garage. 🙂

67 hinges are a monster all their own. 68 and 69 are basic It is a heater I got from rural king. It runs on 220v and surprisingly does a great job. It was like $150 too

I must have missed the link to the hinges.....I imagine that these will be same as for Camaro? I thought there was a slight difference in the 68 and 69 hinges but I may be wrong....thanks for sharing Jon.

Sorry. I forgot the link. They are on eBay everywhere. Yes 68 and 69 are slightly different. Supposedly these Hinges are interchangeable. I almost want to try them on my 1969 bird To see if they still work.

@@VinylVillageGarage I understand the difference is due to front fender to door gap variations between 68 and 69- for Camaros, at least. The difference is needed in order to avoid scuffing paint on the edges of the sheetmetal when opening closing sequence takes place.Use the wrong hinge for your model and you're gonna have a gap you can't adjust to your liking.

It is possible but not an easy task getting the door hinges adjusted when done. You would have to remove the door from the hinges first then the hinge from the body.

Are the plates for inside the door hinges replaceable? I was replacing the hinges and snap a bolt of the bottom aft door hinge.

Yes. I don’t know if they are available for purchase and most likely would need to be fabricated. It’s like 3/8” plate. To remove the plate it is accessed form inside the car and you have to bend back a metal tab to remove it.

I am late to this party, but what brand of hinge did you buy? I just re hung the doors on my 69 convert before I weld the floor in. I thinking of going repop.

Not really a brand name just eBay specials is what I call them. They worked good to my surprise especially for the price

I bought two sets from eBay from different sellers and both boxes are identical say made in China. They are all over eBay $89 plus tax. Search 1968 Firebird door hinges.
