He memorized and could interprete all the period tactic manuals.

We were an Army on the March in Medich's Battalion, Wilson Company CSA Infantry marching from Natchitoches Louisiana to Pleasant Hill Louisiana almost 100 miles in six days. As rear guard on the longest March day we marched way more than the 20-25 miles often at the double quick. The first day I was on my feet for 20 hours then walked a beat on guard duty from 4:00am to 6:00am in the mist and fog while it was spitting snow. A quick breakfast then marched our longest March. Hypothermia at night then heat stroke during the day on blistered feet. There has been 3 or 4 of these marches later but I was told #1 was the toughest. Reenacteers today don't know about Reenactment history and never even heard about those events and what it means to see this old man wearing an old Red River Campaign "SURVIVOR" T-shirt at reenactments! Telling stories of the event they just look at you dumbfounded.
