I was thinking the same thing, imagine if this was a secret playthrough route of the game. If you kill one of the store clerks, then the game switches to a new storyline secretly. It'll start out normally, except the girls start talking about hearing about the murder, and then eventually you can read their phone texts and see they are getting paranoid about you. Then the game will end with them ganging up to stop you and you have to escape and get out of town before the police catch you or something. I wish there was a game with a really wild secret route like this in an otherwise totally normal game and story.

My guess is that was the plan, but they ran out of money before they could do so. What we have here is the result of moneylenders seized the game and threw together what they had on Steam, hoping to recoup some cash then move on. How many other unfinished games published on Steam ended up they way they do because of that?

its the freely available modern game engines (UE, Unity...) with a high-quality asset ecosystem, combined with the obvious lack of game development experience. basically pretty much anyone can create a good looking game (even with free assets), scripting is getting easier than ever, but even with all those tool available most indie developers still lack the skills to polish it and further customize the game. thats why so many indie games have a certain 'feel' which corresponds to the game engine they were made in.

it's basically a polished turd, yeah it's shiny and all that but at the end of the day it's still a turd

The game actually make you start with a hand gun, so it was confusing to learn that you're actually going to hunt in this game. You would think the game would only have a hunting rifle, but it gives you a hand gun and an assault rifle...
