I’m no poker expert but he wasn’t that impressive. If I was playing Daniel’s hand, after the first three cards were flipped I would stay in for either a 3 or a 6 and make my decision on the 4th card. Seeing a 3 right after, I wouldn’t have to think too hard about staying in and would be able to focus all my brainpower on being an ass across the table

Some day, when Hellmuth starts steaming and the table gets irritated, I want to hear some hero at the table just very patiently say - where Phil can hear him - "guys you need to lay off, you have to understand that this guy used to be one of the best players in the world" and just watch as Hellmuth launches himself beyond the stratosphere.

Phil Hellmuth is not the greatest poker player ever. He doesn’t play enough poker to be considered the best. Phil would have to rank in the top 25 consistently and he hasn’t. He does win WSOP bracelets against bad players or gets lucky. If Daniel Negreanu won all of his 2nd places in WSOP he probably would be tied with Phil. Daniel is very unlucky when he goes all in he usually gets rivered. I don’t think there is a GOAT poker player because there’s so many great players. I can say the biggest ego and the biggest asshole in poker is Phil Hellmuth.

I can tell you that young Phil H was a very polite and engaging gentleman with us (total strangers to him) when we played golf with him in Vegas back in '91. I still remember that enjoyable round. He simply said he "played cards" and let me try his Ti-shafted driver that he had recently won in a poker tournament. Not a hint of ego was detected. Found out much later that he was a big shot poker player. His antics at the table are just part of his play style. I still consider him a genuine good guy.

He has literally insulted and called people stupid because he didn't think the two cards they entered a hand with against him were good enough. I have actually met the guy myself too and he wasn't rude, but he wasn't overly nice or kind. Phil’s need for approval is unmatched. He’s a great player but his crusade with being the best in everyone’s mind is what makes him not the best. Daniel is right, Ivey doesn’t give a shit and is successful in every format of the game. This is a debatable point. He is undoubtedly the best tournament player with buyins below 10k but he does seem to struggle against the top tournament pros in the high roller and super high roller events. Phil has a huge edge since he's a professional player against the average 10k< field since most of them are amateur players or mid-low level pros. I don't think anyone would care at all about this except he consistently brags about how he's the greatest poker player of all time. Can Phil be considered a great tournament player if he beats up mostly bad players? Probably to each their own, but I would personally say no. For me, it's like saying Jimmer Fredette is the greatest basketball player of all time because he owns the CBA players. Yes he is the best CBA player but if you threw him in the NBA he would not even have a roster spot.

Negreanu is better than Helmuth, but he is also making these comments after learning the hard way that for a while he was delusional himself. He got destroyed vs. Polk in their heads up battle for which he studied a ton with coaches to improve, making him realize in the process hoe much room for improvement there still was. He became a better player than he ever was through that process and is a lot better than Helmuth now.

@@thesimpsons17 On the other hand, Negreanu needles Hellmuth because, (as he said himself about Ivey) he is an old school hustler and wants action. Between Phil and Phil, I think overall Ivey is better NLH player. His cash game is way better than Hellmuth's, and Ivey's dominance at his heyday was bigger then Hellmuth's at his. Hellmuth is better in large MTTs though, and much tougher to play against. When Ivey is card dead, he is gonna be quiet and concentrate on protecting his money. When Hellmuth is card dead, he is gonna try to do weird shit that sometimes may work. And btw - all his talk about how he hates GTO, how he doesn't study theory and how he uses "white magic" instead and whatever - that is a load of bs. Hellmuth spends at least 5-6 hours with coaches and solvers every day. And yes, btw, all this me me me posturing - Hellmuth does that only when there is a tv camera on. He does that on purpose - it is part of his brand. Off camera - he has a completely different personality. the interesting thing is it always boils down clearly to insecurity. hes very intelligent but also clearly emotionally stunted and insecure. From some of the candid stuff I see of him among the common folk, I get the sense hes a decent enough person, but he gets into his elevated state and ends up coming off as a toddler. All this to say, your comment is spot on. I aspire to have his talent, but wouldn't want to be in his shoes.

@@brianchassee you should learn about the levels of psychology in poker, it's far from just a card game. Being able to craft the character your opponents think you are and get in people's heads the way Phil does is beyond the level any other poker player has got to in the history of the game.

To be fair a tournament measure of success is consistency, not earnings. Daniel briefly held the title for most earnings due to a single solitary tournament win. Would you consider someone who came in first place one time to be better than someone whose final tabled a dozen times?

Phil is underrated. In the 80's and 90's poker was "unstudied" and the best strategist made the most money; not the best student i.e. the one who studies the most. Phil should absolutely be credited for his natural born talent and ability to "solve" the game before solvers or general strategical advice. His dominance in the 80's and 90's put him in the conversation as the GOAT, and so does his WSOP bracelet count - but less so in my opinion as this is more to do with how many events a player enters. To say he is the GOAT is not to say he is the best at poker in the current climate. Almost no-one would say he's the greatest since the 2000's. And before the 2000's it's still debatable. And that's the great thing about poker, it's really hard to tell who's good because of the variance.
